Hybrid vehicle drive system and method and idle reduction system and method
One embodiment relates to a hybrid vehicle drive system for a vehicle including a first prime mover, a first prime mover driven transmission, a rechargeable power source, and a PTO. The hybrid vehicle drive system can include a control system for reducing or eliminating regenerative braking during a traction control or anti-lock braking event.
1. A vehicle drive system for a vehicle including a first prime mover, a first prime mover driven transmission, a rechargeable energy source, a first power take-off (PTO) and a second PTO, the vehicle drive system comprising:
a first electric motor coupled to the first PTO;
a second electric motor configured to be in mechanical communication with the second PTO and electrical communication with the rechargeable energy source, wherein the second electric motor is configured to receive power from the first prime mover driven transmission through the second PTO, the second electric motor being configured to use power from the rechargeable energy source or from the first prime mover driven transmission through the second PTO to rotate, wherein the second electric motor is configured to provide power to the rechargeable energy source when rotated by the first prime mover driven transmission through the second PTO, wherein the first prime mover is configured to provide power to the first prime mover driven transmission to propel the vehicle in a first mode and the first electric motor and the second electric motor are configured to provide power to the first prime mover driven transmission to propel the vehicle using the first PTO and the second PTO in a second mode; and
a control system in electrical communication with the first electric motor and the second electric motor.
2. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 , wherein the power is not provided to the first electric motor and the second electric motor while driving in response to an antilock or traction control event.
3. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 , wherein the first electric motor provides low speed travel for the vehicle.
4. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 , wherein the second electric motor is driven by the second PTO to charge the rechargeable energy source while driving a hydraulic pump.
5. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle drive system provides dampening to reduce vibration and gear backlash in the first PTO.
6. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 , further comprising a through shaft coupling the second electric motor and a hydraulic pump, the through shaft being disposed through the hydraulic pump.
7. The vehicle drive system of claim 6 , wherein the second electric motor is attached to an end of the through shaft.
8. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 wherein the first electric motor is configured to provide power to the first prime mover driven transmission to propel the vehicle in a third mode via the first PTO without power being provided from the second electric motor to the first prime mover driven transmission.
9. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 wherein an input speed of the second PTO and an output speed of the second PTO are not 1:1.
10. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 wherein first prime mover speed is controlled before engagement of a clutch in between the first prime mover and the second electric motor.
11. A vehicle drive system for a vehicle, comprising;
a combustion engine;
a transmission;
a rechargeable energy source;
a first power take-off (PTO);
a second PTO;
a first electric motor coupled to the first PTO;
a second electric motor configured to be in mechanical communication with the second PTO and electrical communication with the rechargeable energy source, wherein the second electric motor is configured to receive power from the transmission through the second PTO, the second electric motor being configured to use power from the rechargeable energy source or from the transmission through the second PTO to rotate, wherein the second electric motor is configured to provide power to the rechargeable energy source when rotated by the transmission through the second PTO, wherein the combustion engine is configured to provide power to the transmission to propel the vehicle in a first mode and the first electric motor and the second electric motor are configured to provide power to the transmission to propel the vehicle using the first PTO and the second PTO in a second mode; and
a control system in electrical communication with the first electric motor and the second electric motor.
12. The vehicle drive system of claim 11 , wherein the power is not provided to the first electric motor and the second electric motor while driving in response to an antilock or traction control event.
13. The vehicle drive system of claim 11 , wherein the first electric motor provides power to the transmission for low speed travel for the vehicle and the second electric motor is not providing power to the transmission in a third mode.
14. The vehicle drive system of claim 11 , wherein the second electric motor is driven by the second PTO to charge the rechargeable energy source while driving a hydraulic pump.
15. The vehicle drive system of claim 11 , wherein the vehicle drive system provides dampening to reduce vibration and gear backlash in the first PTO.
16. The vehicle drive system of claim 11 , further comprising a through shaft coupling the second electric motor and a hydraulic pump, the through shaft being disposed through the hydraulic pump.
17. The vehicle drive system of claim 11 , wherein the second electric motor is attached to an end of the through shaft.
18. The vehicle drive system of claim 11 , wherein the first electric motor is configured to provide power to the transmission to propel the vehicle in a third mode via the first PTO without power being provided from the second electric motor to the transmission.
19. The vehicle drive system of claim 11 wherein an input speed of the second PTO and an output speed of the second PTO are not 1:1.
20. The vehicle drive system of claim 11 wherein speed of the combustion engine is controlled before engagement of a clutch in between the combustion engine and the second electric motor.
21. A vehicle drive system for a vehicle comprising a first prime mover, a first prime mover driven transmission, a rechargeable energy source, a first power take-off (PTO) and a second PTO, the vehicle drive system comprising:
a first electric motor coupled to the first PTO;
a second electric motor configured to be in mechanical communication with the second PTO and electrical communication with the rechargeable energy source; and
a control system configured to cause the second electric motor to use power from the rechargeable energy source or from the first prime mover driven transmission through the second PTO to rotate, wherein the second electric motor is configured to provide power to the rechargeable energy source when rotated by the first prime mover driven transmission through the second PTO, wherein the control system is configured to cause the first prime mover to provide power to the first prime mover driven transmission to propel the vehicle in a first mode and wherein the control system is configured to cause the first electric motor and the second electric motor to provide power to the first prime mover driven transmission to propel the vehicle using the first PTO and the second PTO in a second mode.
22. The vehicle drive system of claim 21 , wherein the power is not provided to the first electric motor and the second electric motor while driving in response to an antilock or traction control event.
23. The vehicle drive system of claim 21 , wherein the control system is configured to cause the first electric motor to provide the power to the first prime mover driven transmission in a low speed without providing power from the second electric motor to the first prime mover driven transmission.
