Abstract

An apparatus and a method of defrosting frozen items, is provided. The apparatus and method utilizes a fluid flow system and method, such as a fluid-push/pull system in which generally an entire volume of fluid is pushed or pulled through a cavity in which frozen items are located and/or a continuous motion system in which fluid is circulated within a fluid tank of the system.

Claims (45)

1. A method of defrosting items, the method comprising:

filling a cavity with defrosting liquid;

obtaining a first temperature reading of the defrosting liquid;

comparing the first temperature reading to a first predetermined temperature range;

locating a frozen item within the cavity when the first temperature reading is within the first predetermined temperature range;

developing a flow of defrosting liquid within the cavity so as to increase heat transfer between the frozen item and the defrosting liquid;

obtaining a second temperature reading of the defrosting liquid; and

comparing the second temperature reading to a second predetermined temperature range.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

performing a cooling process for cooling the defrosting liquid if the second temperature reading is above a maximum value of the second predetermined temperature range.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the cooling process comprises at least one of:

drawing heat energy from the existing defrosting liquid; and

adding new defrosting liquid to the existing defrosting liquid.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the cooling process comprises adding new defrosting liquid to the existing defrosting liquid.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the new defrosting liquid has an average temperature below the maximum value of the second predetermined temperature range.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein at least some of the new defrosting liquid is frozen when it is added to the existing defrosting liquid.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

comparing the second temperature reading to a third predetermined temperature range; and

adding heat to the defrosting liquid if the second temperature reading is below a minimum value of the third predetermined temperature range.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein heat is added to the defrosting liquid by moving a heater from a first configuration to a second configuration, thereby causing the heater to transfer heat energy to the defrosting liquid.

9. The method of claim 8 , the method further comprising obtaining a third temperature reading of the defrosting liquid while the heater is in the second configuration.

10. The method of claim 9 , the method further comprising comparing the third temperature reading to the third predetermined temperature range.

11. The method of claim 10 , the method further comprising moving the heater from its second configuration to its first configuration if the third temperature reading is within the third predetermined temperature range.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein a controller moves the heater between its first and second configurations.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first predetermined temperature range is 37-39 degrees Fahrenheit.

14. A method of defrosting items, the method comprising:

adjusting a first temperature range;

filling a cavity with defrosting liquid to a prescribed threshold liquid level;

measuring a temperature of the defrosting liquid and comparing said measurement against the first temperature range; and

changing the temperature of the defrosting liquid when said the temperature of the defrosting liquid is not within the first temperature range.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

locating an item within the cavity such that the item is in direct communication with said defrosting liquid when the defrosting liquid is within the first temperature range;

developing a flow of defrosting liquid within the cavity; and

continuously monitoring the temperature of the defrosting liquid.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

monitoring the temperature of the defrosting liquid until the defrosted items are removed from the defrosting liquid;

wherein said monitoring is performed by continuously comparing the temperature of the defrosting liquid against the first temperature range, a second temperature range, and a third temperature range.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

cooling said defrosting liquid when the temperature of the defrosting liquid is above the first temperature range and within the second and third temperature ranges.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

removing said item from said defrosting liquid when the temperature is above the second temperature range and within the third temperature range.

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

changing said defrosting liquid when the temperature is above the second temperature range and within the third temperature range; and

removing said item from said defrosting liquid when the temperature is above the third temperature range.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein said first temperature range is 37-39 degrees Fahrenheit.
