Abstract

An apparatus comprises at least one processing device configured to select a snapshot lineage comprising one or more snapshots of a storage volume comprising data stored on one or more storage devices of a storage system, the snapshot lineage comprising at least one cloud snapshot lineage, the at least one cloud snapshot lineage comprising at least a subset of the one or more snapshots of the storage volume that have been copied to cloud storage of at least one cloud external to the storage system. The at least one processing device is also configured to generate configuration data for accessing the at least one cloud snapshot lineage. The at least one processing device is further configured to transfer the configuration data to at least one additional processing device to enable the at least one additional processing device to access the at least one cloud snapshot lineage.

Claims (49)

1. An apparatus comprising:

at least one processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory;

the at least one processing device being configured:

to select a snapshot lineage comprising two or more snapshots of a storage volume comprising data stored on one or more storage devices of a storage system, the snapshot lineage comprising (i) a local snapshot lineage stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices of the storage system and (ii) two or more cloud snapshot lineages stored on cloud storage of two or more different clouds external to the storage system, a first one of the two or more cloud snapshot lineages comprising a first subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume stored on first cloud storage of a first cloud of the two or more different clouds external to the storage system, and a second one of the two or more cloud snapshot lineages comprising a second subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume stored on second cloud storage of a second cloud of the two or more clouds external to the storage system, the first subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume being different than the second subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume;

to generate configuration data for accessing the two or more cloud snapshot lineages, the configuration data comprising metadata describing first and second cloud volumes of the first and second clouds where the first and second subsets of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume are stored on the first and second cloud storage of the first and second clouds external to the storage system; and

to transfer the configuration data to at least one additional processing device to enable the at least one additional processing device to access the two or more cloud snapshot lineages.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the storage volume comprises one of:

at least one of the one or more storage devices of the storage system;

a given logical unit provided by at least one of the one or more storage devices;

a consistency group comprising a set of two or more logical units provided by at least one of the one or more storage devices; and

an access-restricted storage group comprising a set of two or more logical units provided by at least one of the one or more storage devices where access to the storage group is limited to one or more designated host devices.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the at least one additional processing device is part of at least one additional storage system.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the at least one additional processing device is part of a host device external to the storage system.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 where the host device external to the storage system comprises a cloud computing platform.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein generating the configuration data comprises creating a data envelope, and wherein transferring the configuration data to the at least one additional processing device comprises packaging the data envelope into at least one of a byte stream and an encrypted file.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the configuration data comprises cloud identifiers that point to portions of the first and second cloud storage of the first and second clouds on which the first and second cloud snapshot lineages reside.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein at least one of the first and second cloud storage comprises cloud object storage, and wherein the configuration data further comprises a name of a bucket of the cloud object storage where the at least one of the first and second cloud snapshot lineages reside.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the configuration data comprises credentials for accessing the first and second cloud storage of the first and second clouds on which the first and second cloud snapshot lineages reside.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein:

the metadata describing the first cloud volume comprises: a volume identifier; a volume name; and a volume file name residing in the first cloud storage; and

the metadata describing the first subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume copied to the first cloud snapshot lineage comprises, for a given one of the first subset of the two or more snapshots: a snapshot identifier; a snapshot name; and volume file name residing in the first cloud storage.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the configuration data comprises first and second sets of encryption keys for decrypting the first and second subsets of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume copied to the first and second cloud snapshot lineages.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the configuration data comprises an indication of one or more types of compression applied to the first and second subsets of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume copied to the first and second cloud snapshot lineages.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the at least one processing device is part of the storage system.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first and second cloud snapshots lineages are associated with first and second snapshot policies specifying at least one of:

different encryption to be applied to snapshots copied to the first and second cloud snapshot lineages;

different compression to be applied to snapshots copied to the first and second cloud snapshot lineages; and

different ages at which ones of the snapshots residing in the local snapshot lineage are to be copied to the first and second cloud snapshot lineages.

15. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory processor-readable storage medium having stored therein program code of one or more software programs, wherein the program code when executed by at least one processing device causes the at least one processing device to perform steps of:

selecting a snapshot lineage comprising two or more snapshots of a storage volume comprising data stored on one or more storage devices of a storage system, the snapshot lineage comprising (i) a local snapshot lineage stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices of the storage system and (ii) two or more cloud snapshot lineages stored on cloud storage of two or more different clouds external to the storage system, a first one of the two or more cloud snapshot lineages comprising a first subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume stored on first cloud storage of a first cloud of the two or more different clouds external to the storage system, and a second one of the two or more cloud snapshot lineages comprising a second subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume stored on second cloud storage of a second cloud of the two or more clouds external to the storage system, the first subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume being different than the second subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume;

generating configuration data for accessing the two or more cloud snapshot lineages, the configuration data comprising metadata describing first and second cloud volumes of the first and second clouds where the first and second subsets of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume are stored on the first and second cloud storage of the first and second clouds external to the storage system; and

transferring the configuration data to at least one additional processing device to enable the at least one additional processing device to access the two or more cloud snapshot lineages.

16. The computer program product of claim 15 wherein the at least one additional processing device is part of one of: at least one additional storage system; and a host device external to the storage system.

17. The computer program product of claim 15 wherein the configuration data comprises, for the first cloud snapshot lineage:

a cloud identifier that points to a portion of the first cloud storage of the first cloud on which the first cloud snapshot lineage resides;

credentials for accessing the first cloud storage of the first cloud on which the first cloud snapshot lineage resides;

encryption keys for decrypting the first subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume copied to the first cloud snapshot lineage; and

an indication of one or more types of compression applied to the first subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume copied to the first cloud snapshot lineage.

18. A method comprising steps of:

selecting a snapshot lineage comprising two or more snapshots of a storage volume comprising data stored on one or more storage devices of a storage system, the snapshot lineage comprising (i) a local snapshot lineage stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices of the storage system and (ii) two or more cloud snapshot lineages stored on cloud storage of two or more different clouds external to the storage system, a first one of the two or more cloud snapshot lineages comprising a first subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume stored on first cloud storage of a first cloud of the two or more different clouds external to the storage system, and a second one of the two or more cloud snapshot lineages comprising a second subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume stored on second cloud storage of a second cloud of the two or more clouds external to the storage system, the first subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume being different than the second subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume;

generating configuration data for accessing the two or more cloud snapshot lineages, the configuration data comprising metadata describing first and second cloud volumes of the first and second clouds where the first and second subsets of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume are stored on the first and second cloud storage of the first and second clouds external to the storage system; and

transferring the configuration data to at least one additional processing device to enable the at least one additional processing device to access the two or more cloud snapshot lineages;

wherein the method is performed by at least one processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the at least one additional processing device is part of one of: at least one additional storage system; and a host device external to the storage system.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein the configuration data comprises, for the first cloud snapshot lineage:

a cloud identifier that points to a portion of the first cloud storage of the first cloud on which the first cloud snapshot lineage resides;

credentials for accessing the first cloud storage of the first cloud on which the first cloud snapshot lineage resides;

encryption keys for decrypting the first subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume copied to the first cloud snapshot lineage; and

an indication of one or more types of compression applied to the first subset of the two or more snapshots of the storage volume copied to the first cloud snapshot lineage.
