Abstract

In response to a detected presence of an intended target appliance within a logical topography of controllable appliances identity information associated with the intended target appliance is used to automatically add to a graphical user interface of a controlling device an icon representative of the intended target appliance and to create at a Universal Control Engine a listing of communication methods for use in controlling corresponding functional operations of the intended target appliance. When the icon is later activated, the controlling device is placed into an operating state appropriate for controlling functional operations of the intended target appliance while the Universal Control Engine uses at least one of the communication methods to transmit at least one command to place the intended target appliance into a predetermined operating state.

Claims (34)

1. A method performed by a switching device that comprises a plurality of audio/video (AV) ports and a switch circuit that is operable to selectively connect any one of a plurality of source devices, each of which is connected to a corresponding one of the plurality of AV ports, to a sink device that is connected to another one of the plurality of AV ports, the method comprising:

processing an activity request received via an interface of the switching device;

retrieving a one or more data elements from a matrix that defines for the activity request desired equipment states for the one or more of the plurality of source devices, the switching device, and the sink device; and

using the one or more data elements to cause the switching device to perform a one or more actions to place at least one of the one or more of the plurality of source devices and the sink device into the desired equipment states and to place a one of the one or more of the plurality of source devices and the sink device into communication via use of the switching device;

wherein at least one of the one or more actions is determined at least in part in response to a video stream originating from the one of the one or more of the plurality of source devices being detected at a one of the plurality of AV ports of the switching device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the activity request is received from one or more devices communicatively coupled to the switching device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more devices communicatively coupled to the switching device comprises a mobile device.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more devices communicatively coupled to the switching device comprises a smart appliance.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more actions comprise switching to a port of the plurality of AV ports to which a source device of the plurality of source devices that is configured to perform at least one of the one or more actions is coupled.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more actions comprise causing a source device of the plurality of source devices to playback content.

7. A switching device, comprising:

a plurality of audio/video (AV) ports;

a network interface; and

a switch circuit that is operable to selectively connect any one of a plurality of source devices, each of which is connected to a corresponding one of the plurality of AV ports, to a sink device that is connected to another one of the plurality of AV ports, the switching device being configured to:

process an activity request received via the network interface;

retrieve a one or more data elements from a matrix that defines for the activity request desired equipment states for the one or more of the plurality of source devices, the switching device, and the sink device; and

use the one or more data elements to cause the switching device to perform a one or more actions to place at least one of the one or more of the plurality of source devices and the sink device into the desired equipment states and to place a one of the one or more of the plurality of source devices and the sink device into communication via use of the switching device:

wherein at least one of the one or more actions is determined at least in part in response to a video stream originating from the one of the one or more of the plurality of source devices being detected at a one of the plurality of AV ports of the switching device.

8. The switching device of claim 7 , wherein the activity request is received from one or more devices communicatively coupled to the switching device.

9. The switching device of claim 8 , wherein the one or more devices communicatively coupled to the switching device comprises a mobile device.

10. The switching device of claim 8 , wherein the one or more devices communicatively coupled to the switching device comprises a smart appliance.

11. The switching device of claim 7 , wherein the one or more actions comprise switching to a port of the plurality of AV ports to which a source device of the plurality of source devices that is configured to perform at least one of the one or more actions is coupled.

12. The switching device of claim 7 , wherein the one or more actions comprise causing a source device of the plurality of source devices to playback content.

13. A system, comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory containing computer-readable instructions, which, when executed by the one or more processors, is configured to perform operations in a switching device comprising a plurality of audio/video (AV) ports and a switch circuit that is operable to connect any one of a plurality of source devices, each of which is connected to a corresponding one of the plurality of AV ports, to a sink device that is connected to another one of the plurality of AV ports, the operations comprising:

processing an activity request received via an interface of the switching device;

retrieving a one or more data elements from a matrix that defines for the activity request desired equipment states for the one or more of the plurality of source devices, the switching device, and the sink device; and

using the one or more data elements to cause the switching device to perform a one or more actions to place at least one of the one or more of the plurality of source devices and the sink device into the desired equipment states and to place a one of the one or more of the plurality of source devices and the sink device into communication via use of the switching device;

wherein at least one of the one or more actions is determined at least in part in response to a video stream originating from the one of the one or more of the plurality of source devices being detected at a one of the plurality of AV ports of the switching device.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the activity request is received from one or more devices communicatively coupled to the switching device.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more devices communicatively coupled to the switching device comprises a mobile device.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more devices communicatively coupled to the switching device comprises a smart appliance.

17. The system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more actions comprise switching to a port of the plurality of AV ports to which a source device of the plurality of source devices that is configured to perform at least one of the one or more actions is coupled.
