Abstract

In one implementation, a system resource is added to a storage system, for a resource-preserving upgrade. An upgrade component is coupled to the storage system as a temporary storage system shelf. Storage drives are moved from the storage system to the upgrade component. One or more storage controllers of the upgrade component are promoted to take over data services from the storage system.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

migrating a nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM) function from the storage system to the upgrade component.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the promoting comprises:

transitioning from operating the second controller of the first high availability (HA) controller pair of the storage system as a secondary controller of the storage system, prior to upgrading, to operating the second controller of the second HA controller pair of the upgrade component as the secondary controller of the storage system;

transitioning from operating the first controller of the first HA controller pair of the storage system as a primary controller of the storage system, to operating the second controller of the second HA controller pair of the upgrade component as the primary controller of the storage system and operating the first controller of the first HA controller pair of the storage system as the secondary controller of the storage system; and

transitioning from operating the first controller of the first HA controller pair of the storage system as the secondary controller of the storage system to operating a first controller of the second HA controller pair of the upgrade component as the secondary controller of the storage system.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

shutting down the first controller of a first HA controller pair of the storage system.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

verifying each of the plurality of storage drives is accessible in the upgrade component as the temporary storage system shelf of the storage system.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the upgrade component comprises a chassis, an HA controller pair, and one or more solid-state storage drives.

7. A tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable media having instructions thereupon which, when executed by a processing device, cause the processing device to perform a method comprising:

coupling of an upgrade component to a storage system as a temporary storage system shelf of the storage system, the upgrade component associated with a system resource to be added to the storage system, and one or more storage controllers of the storage system performing data services comprising accessing existing storage system resources and storage system resources of the temporary storage system shelf; and

transitioning, by the processing device, one or more storage controllers of the upgrade component to take over the data services, comprising the accessing the storage system resources of the upgrade component and the accessing the existing storage system resources, from the storage system, with the upgrade component in communication with the plurality of storage drives as an upgraded storage system; and

transitioning from operating a first controller of a first high availability (HA) controller pair of the storage system as a primary controller for shelf traffic with a second controller of the first HA controller pair as a secondary controller, to operating the first controller of the first HA controller pair of the storage system as the primary controller with a second controller of a second HA controller pair of the upgrade component as the secondary controller.

8. The computer-readable media of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises:

transitioning a nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM) function from the storage system to the upgrade component, in cooperation with the plurality of storage drives.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the moving comprises:

physically moving each of the plurality of storage drives from the storage system to the upgrade component.

10. The method of claim 3 , wherein the promoting further comprises:

transitioning from operating the first controller of the first HA controller pair of the storage system as a primary controller of the storage system, to operating the second controller of the second HA controller pair of the upgrade component as the primary controller of the storage system and operating the first controller of the first HA controller pair of the storage system as the secondary controller of the storage system.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the promoting comprises:

transitioning from operating the first controller of the first HA controller pair of the storage system as the secondary controller of the storage system to operating a first controller of the second HA controller pair of the upgrade component as the secondary controller of the storage system.

12. A storage system upgrade component, comprising:

one or more solid-state storage drives; and

one or more storage controllers, to:

coupling of the upgrade component to a storage system as a temporary storage system shelf of the storage system, the upgrade component associated with a system resource to be added to the storage system, and one or more storage controllers of the storage system performing data services comprising accessing existing storage system resources and storage system resources of the temporary storage system shelf; and

take over the data services, comprising the accessing the storage system resources of the upgrade component and the accessing the existing storage system, from the storage system, in cooperation with the plurality of storage drives, as an upgraded storage system; and

the storage system, prior to forming the upgraded storage system, comprises a first high availability (HA) controller pair as the one or more storage controllers of the storage system, and the plurality of storage drives;

the one or more storage controllers of the upgrade component comprises a second HA controller pair; and

the second HA controller pair is to:

transition from the storage system operating a second controller of the first HA controller pair as a secondary controller, to the storage system operating a second controller of the second HA controller pair of the upgrade component as the secondary controller.
