Abstract

A facility for managing a document conversion environment is described. In various embodiments, the facility includes a native application associated with a native document type and an isolation service. The isolation service determines whether a native application associated with the native document type has started and when it has not started, starts the native application and causes the started native application to load and convert a native document to a common document format, wherein the isolation service starts a single instance of the native application and monitors the single instance of the native application so that it complies with specified a parameter, condition, or setting of operation.

Claims (61)

1. A method, comprising:

launching, by a computer, an instance of a service, the service configured for issuing commands to native applications capable of converting documents from one format to another;

identifying, by the service, a native application based on a document type;

determining, by the service, whether the native application is suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel;

responsive to the native application not being suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel, launching, by the service, a single instance of the native application;

commanding, by the service, the single instance of the native application to open a document of the document type;

commanding, by the service, the single instance of the native application to perform a document conversion for converting the document of the document type from one format to another;

determining, by the service, whether the document conversion performed by the single instance of the native application has been completed; and

responsive to the document conversion not being completed by the single instance of the native application within a predetermined amount of time, commanding, by the service, the single instance of the native application to terminate the document conversion or terminating, by the service, the single instance of the native application.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

responsive to the native application being suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel, determining, by the service based on time, speed, or a number of threads needed to process a configurable or dynamically determined number of document conversion tasks, whether to launch multiple instances of the native application.

3. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

based on time, speed, or a number of threads needed to process a configurable or dynamically determined number of document conversion tasks, launching, by the service, multiple instances of a plurality of native applications suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein each of the multiple instances executes in its own process space.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

serializing a plurality of document conversion tasks for the single instance of the native application.

6. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

subsequent to the terminating, restarting, by the service, the native application.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the document conversion produces a postscript format of the document.

8. A system, comprising:

a processor;

a non-transitory computer memory; and

stored instructions translatable by the processor for:

launching an instance of a service, the service configured for issuing commands to native applications capable of converting documents from one format to another; and

causing the service to perform:

identifying a native application based on a document type;

determining whether the native application is suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel;

responsive to the native application not being suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel, launching a single instance of the native application;

commanding the single instance of the native application to open a document of the document type;

commanding the single instance of the native application to perform a document conversion for converting the document of the document type from one format to another;

determining whether the document conversion performed by the single instance of the native application has been completed; and

responsive to the document conversion not being completed by the single instance of the native application within a predetermined amount of time, commanding the single instance of the native application to terminate the document conversion or terminating, by the service, the single instance of the native application.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the stored instructions are further translatable by the processor for causing the service to perform:

responsive to the native application being suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel, determining, based on time, speed, or a number of threads needed to process a configurable or dynamically determined number of document conversion tasks, whether to launch multiple instances of the native application.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the stored instructions are further translatable by the processor for causing the service to perform:

based on time, speed, or a number of threads needed to process a configurable or dynamically determined number of document conversion tasks, launching multiple instances of a plurality of native applications suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein each of the multiple instances executes in its own process space.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the stored instructions are further translatable by the processor for:

serializing a plurality of document conversion tasks for the single instance of the native application.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the stored instructions are further translatable by the processor for causing the service to perform:

subsequent to the terminating, restarting the native application.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the document conversion produces a postscript format of the document.

15. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions translatable by a processor for:

launching an instance of a service, the service configured for issuing commands to native applications capable of converting documents from one format to another; and

causing the service to perform:

identifying a native application based on a document type;

determining whether the native application is suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel;

responsive to the native application not being suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel, launching a single instance of the native application;

commanding the single instance of the native application to open a document of the document type;

commanding the single instance of the native application to perform a document conversion for converting the document of the document type from one format to another;

determining whether the document conversion performed by the single instance of the native application has been completed; and

responsive to the document conversion not being completed by the single instance of the native application within a predetermined amount of time, commanding the single instance of the native application to terminate the document conversion or terminating, by the service, the single instance of the native application.

16. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further translatable by the processor for causing the service to perform:

responsive to the native application being suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel, determining, based on time, speed, or a number of threads needed to process a configurable or dynamically determined number of document conversion tasks, whether to launch multiple instances of the native application.

17. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further translatable by the processor for causing the service to perform:

based on time, speed, or a number of threads needed to process a configurable or dynamically determined number of document conversion tasks, launching multiple instances of a plurality of native applications suitable for performing multiple document conversion tasks concurrently in parallel.

18. The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein each of the multiple instances executes in its own process space.

19. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further translatable by the processor for:

serializing a plurality of document conversion tasks for the single instance of the native application.

20. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further translatable by the processor for causing the service to perform:

subsequent to the terminating, restarting the native application.
