Abstract

A side-by-side off-road utility vehicle comprising a vehicle operational status switch for controlling the operational status of the vehicle, a side-by-side seating structure, a plurality of safety restraint devices operable to retain one or more vehicle passenger in the side-by-side seating structure, and a prime mover RPM controller. The prime mover RPM controller operable to output commands to the one or more prime mover of the vehicle to limit a rotational speed of the prime mover(s) when the vehicle is in an On operational status and a selected one or more of the one or more safety restraints is in a disengaged status.

Claims (44)

1. An off-road utility vehicle, said vehicle comprising:

a passenger compartment;

a vehicle operational status switch structured and operable to control the operational status of the vehicle;

a seating structure disposed within the passenger compartment and structured and operable to support one or more vehicle passenger; and

a first passenger safety restraint device, structured and operable to retain a vehicle passenger within at least one of the passenger compartment and the seating structure;

a first safety restraint device sensor structured and operable to monitor an engagement status of the first passenger safety restraint device;

a second passenger safety restraint device, structured and operable to retain the vehicle passenger within at least one of the passenger compartment and the seating structure;

a second safety restraint device sensor structured and operable to monitor an engagement status of the second passenger safety restraint device; and

a prime mover RPM controller, the prime mover RPM controller structured and operable to:

receive input from the vehicle operational status switch to determine an operational status of the vehicle;

receive input from the first safety restraint device sensor to determine an engagement status of the first passenger safety restraint device;

receive input from the second safety restraint device sensor to determine an engagement status of the second passenger safety restraint device; and

output commands to a prime mover of the vehicle to limit a rotational speed of the vehicle prime mover to a rotational speed threshold when the vehicle is in an On operational status and at least one of the first and second passenger safety restraint devices is in a disengaged status.

2. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the first passenger restraint device comprises one of a seat belt, a seat harness, a side door net and a roof net.

3. The vehicle of claim 2 , wherein the second passenger restraint device comprises one of a seat belt, a seat harness, a side door net and a roof net that is different from the first passenger restraint device.

4. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the prime mover RPM controller is further structured and operable to output commands to a throttle of the prime mover to limit the rotational speed of the prime mover to the rotational speed threshold.

5. The vehicle of claim 4 , wherein the prime mover RPM controller is further structured and operable to override inputs received from an accelerator pedal of the vehicle so that the rotational speed of the prime mover is limited to the rotational speed threshold regardless of the inputs received from an accelerator pedal.

6. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the prime mover RPM controller is further structured and operable to output commands to a device structured and operable to control at least one of a current and a voltage supplied to the prime mover to limit the rotational speed of the prime mover to the rotational speed threshold.

7. The vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the prime mover RPM controller is further structured and operable to override inputs received from an accelerator pedal of the vehicle so that the rotational speed of the prime mover is limited to the rotational speed threshold regardless of the inputs received from an accelerator pedal.

8. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the prime mover RPM controller is further structured and operable to output commands to control an ignition timing of the prime mover to limit the rotational speed of the prime mover to the rotational speed threshold.

9. The vehicle of claim 1 further comprising a seat pressure sensor structured and operable to determine the presence of a passenger sitting in the seating structure, and wherein the prime mover RPM controller is further structured and operable to communicate with the seat pressure sensor determine a presence of the passenger in the seating structure of the vehicle, and to limit the rotational speed of the prime mover to the rotational speed threshold when at least one passenger is present in the seating structure and at least one of the first and second passenger safety restraint devices is in a disengaged status.

10. An off-road utility vehicle, said vehicle comprising:

a plurality of wheels operationally connected to a chassis of the vehicle;

a drivetrain operationally connected to at least one of the wheels, the drivetrain comprising one or more prime mover structured and operable to generate torque deliverable to the at least one of the wheels;

a passenger compartment;

a vehicle operational status switch structured and operable to control the operational status of the vehicle;

a seating structure disposed within the passenger compartment and structured and operable to support one or more vehicle passenger; and

a first passenger safety restraint device, structured and operable to retain a vehicle passenger within at least one of the passenger compartment and the seating structure;

a first safety restraint device sensor structured and operable to monitor an engagement status of the first passenger safety restraint device;

a second passenger safety restraint device, structured and operable to retain the vehicle passenger within at least one of the passenger compartment and the seating structure;

a second safety restraint device sensor structured and operable to monitor an engagement status of the second passenger safety restraint device; and

a prime mover RPM controller, the prime mover RPM controller structured and operable to:

receive input from the vehicle operational status switch to determine an operational status of the vehicle;

receive input from the first safety restraint device sensor to determine an engagement status of the first passenger safety restraint device;

receive input from the second safety restraint device sensor to determine an engagement status of the second passenger safety restraint device; and

output commands to the one or more prime mover to limit a rotational speed of the one or more prime mover to a rotational speed threshold when the vehicle is in an On operational status and at least one of the first and second passenger safety restraint devices is in a disengaged status.

11. The vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the first passenger restraint device comprises one of a seat belt, a seat harness, a side door net and a roof net.

12. The vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the second passenger restraint device comprises one of a seat belt, a seat harness, a side door net and a roof net that is different from the first passenger restraint device.

13. The vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the prime mover RPM controller is further structured and operable to output commands to a throttle of the prime mover to limit the rotational speed of the prime mover to the rotational speed threshold.

14. The vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the prime mover RPM controller is further structured and operable to override inputs received from an accelerator pedal of the vehicle so that the rotational speed of the prime mover is limited to the rotational speed threshold regardless of the inputs received from an accelerator pedal.
