Abstract

A monitoring device configured to be attached to a body of a subject includes a sensor having at least one optical emitter and at least one optical detector, and a processor coupled to the sensor. The processor is configured to instruct the at least one optical emitter to emit a different wavelength of light into the body of the subject during each of a series of respective time intervals. The processor is configured to measure a respective different physiological parameter from signals produced by the at least one optical detector upon receiving light from the body of the subject during each of the respective time intervals.

Claims (45)

1. A monitoring device configured to be attached to a body of a subject, the monitoring device comprising:

a sensor comprising at least one optical emitter and at least one optical detector; and

a processor coupled to the sensor, wherein the processor is configured to:

instruct the at least one optical emitter to emit a different wavelength of light into the body of the subject during each of a series of respective time intervals including a first time interval and a second time interval; and measure a respective different physiological parameter from signals produced by the at least one optical detector upon receiving light from the body of the subject during each of the respective time intervals, including measuring subject heart rate using a first wavelength during the first time interval and measuring subject breathing rate using a second wavelength during the second time interval.

2. The monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to instruct the at least one optical emitter to emit a different set of wavelengths of light during each of the respective time intervals.

3. The monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to measure in a respective one of the time intervals.

The monitoring device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one motion sensor configured to sense motion of the subject, wherein the processor is configured to determine an activity state of the subject by processing motion information from the at least one motion sensor, and wherein the processor is configured to determine which physiological parameter to measure during each respective time interval based on the activity state of the subject.

5. The monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to measure subject blood pressure in a third one of the time intervals.

6. The monitoring device of claim 5 , further comprising at least one motion sensor configured to sense motion of the subject, wherein the processor is configured to:

measure subject RRi in a fourth one of the time intervals; and

determine an activity state of the subject by processing motion information from the at least one motion sensor, and wherein the processor is configured to measure subject RRi and/or subject blood pressure only when the activity state is at or below a threshold.

The monitoring device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one motion sensor configured to sense motion of the subject, wherein the processor is configured to determine an activity state of the subject by processing motion information from the at least one motion sensor, and wherein the processor is configured to measure subject heart rate and/or subject breathing rate only when the activity state is at or above a threshold.

8. The monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the second wavelength is shorter than the first wavelength.

9. The monitoring device of claim 8 , wherein the second wavelength is shorter than about 600 nm.

10. The monitoring device of claim 8 , wherein the second wavelength is shorter than about 480 nm.

11. The monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the monitoring device is configured to be positioned at or within an ear of the subject.

12. The monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the monitoring device is configured to be secured to an appendage of the subject.

13. A method of monitoring a subject via a monitoring device attached to a body of the subject, wherein the monitoring device comprises a sensor and a processor coupled to the sensor, wherein the sensor comprises at least one optical emitter and at least one optical detector, the method comprising:

emitting a different wavelength of light into the body of the subject via the at least one optical emitter during each of a series of respective time intervals that includes a first time interval and a second time interval; and

measuring, via the processor, a respective different physiological parameter from signals produced by the at least one optical detector upon receiving light from the body of the subject during each of the respective time intervals, wherein:

measuring a respective different physiological parameter from signals produced by the at least one optical detector during each of the time intervals comprises measuring subject heart rate using a first wavelength during the first time interval and measuring subject breathing rate using a second wavelength during the second time interval.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein emitting a different wavelength of light into the body of the subject during each of a series of respective time intervals comprises emitting a different set of wavelengths of light into the body of the subject during each of the respective time intervals.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein measuring a respective different physiological parameter from signals produced by the at least one optical detector during each of the time intervals comprises measuring one or more of the following: subject RRi and subject blood pressure.

The method of claim 13 , wherein the monitoring device further comprises at least one motion sensor configured to sense motion of the subject, wherein the processor is configured to determine an activity state of the subject by processing motion information from the at least one motion sensor, and wherein the method further comprises determining which physiological parameter to measure during each respective time interval based on the activity state of the subject.

The method of claim 13 , wherein measuring a respective different physiological parameter from signals produced by the at least one optical detector during each of the time intervals comprises measuring subject RRi in a third one of the time intervals and measuring subject blood pressure in a fourth one of the time intervals.

The method of claim 17 , wherein the monitoring device further comprises at least one motion sensor configured to sense motion of the subject, wherein the processor is configured to determine an activity state of the subject by processing motion information from the at least one motion sensor, and wherein the method further comprises measuring subject heart rate and/or subject breathing rate only when the activity state is at or above a threshold.

The method of claim 17 , wherein the monitoring device further comprises at least one motion sensor configured to sense motion of the subject, wherein the processor is configured to determine an activity state of the subject by processing motion information from the at least one motion sensor, and wherein the method further comprises measuring subject RRi and/or subject blood pressure only when the activity state is at or below a threshold.

The method of claim 13 , wherein emitting a different wavelength of light into the body of the subject during each of a series of respective time intervals comprises emitting light at the first wavelength during the first time interval and emitting light at the second wavelength during the second time interval, wherein the second wavelength is shorter than the first wavelength.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the second wavelength is shorter than about 600 nm.

22. The method of claim 20 , wherein the second wavelength is shorter than about 480 nm.

23. The method of claim 13 , wherein the monitoring device is configured to be positioned at or within an ear of the subject.

24. The method of claim 13 , wherein the monitoring device is configured to be secured to an appendage of the subject.

25. A monitoring device configured to be attached to a body of a subject, the monitoring device comprising:

a motion sensor configured to sense motion of the subject;

a sensor comprising at least one optical emitter and at least one optical detector; and

a processor coupled to the sensor, wherein the processor is configured to instruct the at least one optical emitter to emit at least one optical wavelength of light into the body of the subject during each of a series of respective time intervals, wherein the processor is configured to measure a respective different physiological parameter from signals produced by the at least one optical detector upon receiving light from the body of the subject during each of the respective time intervals, wherein the processor is configured to process motion information from the motion sensor to determine an activity state of the subject, and wherein the processor:

determines which physiological parameter to measure, during each respective time interval, based on the activity state of the subject; and

measures a subject heart rate using a first wavelength during a first one of the time intervals and measuring subject breathing rate using a second wavelength during a second one of the time intervals.

26. The monitoring device of claim 25 , wherein the processor is configured to measure subject blood pressure in a third one of the time intervals.

27. The monitoring device of claim 26 , wherein the processor is configured to measure subject heart rate and/or subject breathing rate only when the activity state is at or above a threshold.

28. The monitoring device of claim 26 , wherein the processor is configured to:

measure subject RRi in a fourth one of the time intervals; and

measure subject RRi and/or subject blood pressure only when the activity state is at or below a threshold.

29. The monitoring device of claim 25 , wherein the monitoring device is configured to be positioned at or within an ear of the subject.

30. The monitoring device of claim 25 , wherein the monitoring device is configured to be secured to an appendage of the subject.
