Abstract

A media system, receives a received sequence of media content, for presentation at the media system and generates a comparison fingerprint of the received sequence of media content. The comparison fingerprint is for comparison with a plurality of reference fingerprints so as to identify the received sequence of media content. The media system sends a request for identification of additional content to a server system. The request is based at least in part on the comparison fingerprint. The media system receives a response to the request, including information enabling additional content to be selected for display at the media system based at least in part on the identification of the received sequence of media content, and presents a displayed sequence of media content that includes at least a portion of the received sequence of media content and at least a portion of the additional content.

Claims (41)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving and presenting, by a client device, an identified first sequence of media content and an unidentified second sequence of media content;

operating, by the client device, in a tracking mode, wherein, while operating in the tracking mode, the client device (i) accesses reference fingerprint data corresponding to the identified first sequence of media content, (ii) generates comparison fingerprint data representing the unidentified second sequence of media content being received by the client device, (iii) compares the accessed reference fingerprint data with the generated comparison fingerprint data and (iv) determines, based on comparing the accessed reference fingerprint data with the generated comparison fingerprint data, that the comparison fingerprint data does not match the reference fingerprint data; and

responsive to determining that the comparison fingerprint data does not match the reference fingerprint data, transitioning, by the client device, from operating in the tracking mode to operating in a discovery mode, wherein, while operating in the discovery mode, the client device sends the generated comparison fingerprint data to a server for identification of the second sequence of media content based on the comparison fingerprint data.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein presenting the identified first sequence of media content comprises presenting the identified first sequence of media content while operating in the tracking mode and prior to generating the comparison fingerprint data, and wherein presenting the unidentified second sequence of media content comprises presenting the unidentified second sequence of media content while operating in the discovery mode.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

while operating in the discovery mode, the client device (i) generating additional comparison fingerprint data representing the unidentified second sequence of media content and (ii) sending the generated additional comparison fingerprint data to the server.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein, while operating in the tracking mode, the client device refrains from sending any comparison fingerprint data to the server.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first sequence of media content corresponds to a first channel, and wherein the second sequence of media content corresponds to a second channel that is different from the first channel.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

while operating in the discovery mode, the client device receiving an indication from the server that the server has identified the second sequence of media content, wherein the received indication comprises additional reference fingerprint data corresponding to the identified second sequence of media content.

7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

responsive to receiving the indication from the server that the server has identified the second sequence of media content, the client device reentering the tracking mode; and

after reentering the tracking mode, the client device (i) generating additional comparison fingerprint data representing current media content being received and presented by the client device and (ii) comparing the additional comparison fingerprint data with the additional reference fingerprint data so as to identify whether the current media content being received and presented by the client device is a continuation of the identified second sequence of media content.

8 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon program instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a client device, cause the client device to perform operations comprising:

receiving and presenting an identified first sequence of media content and an unidentified second sequence of media content;

operating in a tracking mode, wherein, while operating in the tracking mode, the client device (i) accesses reference fingerprint data corresponding to the identified first sequence of media content, (ii) generates comparison fingerprint data representing the unidentified second sequence of media content being received by the client device, (iii) compares the accessed reference fingerprint data with the generated comparison fingerprint data and (iv) determines, based on comparing the accessed reference fingerprint data with the generated comparison fingerprint data, that the comparison fingerprint data does not match the reference fingerprint data; and

responsive to determining that the comparison fingerprint data does not match the reference fingerprint data, transitioning from operating in the tracking mode to operating in a discovery mode, wherein, while operating in the discovery mode, the client device sends the generated comparison fingerprint data to a server for identification of the second sequence of media content based on the comparison fingerprint data.

9 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein presenting the identified first sequence of media content comprises presenting the identified first sequence of media content while operating in the tracking mode and prior to generating the comparison fingerprint data, and wherein presenting the unidentified second sequence of media content comprises presenting the unidentified second sequence of media content while operating in the discovery mode.

10 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , the operations further comprising:

while operating in the discovery mode, (i) generating additional comparison fingerprint data representing the unidentified second sequence of media content and (ii) sending the generated additional comparison fingerprint data to the server.

11 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein, while operating in the tracking mode, the client device refrains from sending any comparison fingerprint data to the server.

12 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the first sequence of media content corresponds to a first channel, and wherein the second sequence of media content corresponds to a second channel that is different from the first channel.

13 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , the operations further comprising:

while operating in the discovery mode, receiving an indication from the server that the server has identified the second sequence of media content, wherein the received indication comprises additional reference fingerprint data corresponding to the identified second sequence of media content.

14 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

responsive to receiving the indication from the server that the server has identified the second sequence of media content, reentering the tracking mode; and

after reentering the tracking mode, (i) generating additional comparison fingerprint data representing current media content being received and presented by the client device and (ii) comparing the additional comparison fingerprint data with the additional reference fingerprint data so as to identify whether the current media content being received and presented by the client device is a continuation of the identified second sequence of media content.

15 . A client device comprising one or more processors and a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon program instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the client device to perform operations comprising:

receiving and presenting an identified first sequence of media content and an unidentified second sequence of media content;

operating in a tracking mode, wherein, while operating in the tracking mode, the client device (i) accesses reference fingerprint data corresponding to the identified first sequence of media content, (ii) generates comparison fingerprint data representing the unidentified second sequence of media content being received by the client device, (iii) compares the accessed reference fingerprint data with the generated comparison fingerprint data and (iv) determines, based on comparing the accessed reference fingerprint data with the generated comparison fingerprint data, that the comparison fingerprint data does not match the reference fingerprint data; and

responsive to determining that the comparison fingerprint data does not match the reference fingerprint data, transitioning from operating in the tracking mode to operating in a discovery mode, wherein, while operating in the discovery mode, the client device sends the generated comparison fingerprint data to a server for identification of the second sequence of media content based on the comparison fingerprint data.
