Abstract

An automated control system for a screw anchor driving and truss assembly machine. A positioning subsystem determines an orientation of a machine mast's driving axis relative to an intended drive axis and controls the mast to align with the intended drive axis. After a pair of adjacent screw anchors are drive, the controller orients the mast so that an alignment jig for supporting truss apex hardware is held relative to a predetermined point in space.

Claims (29)

1. A system comprising:

an articulating mast operable to move with respect to a support vehicle;

a rotary driver operable to travel along a drive axis of the mast to drive a foundation component into underlying ground;

a positioning system for determining a location of the drive axis within a coordinate system;

a microcontroller programmed to control the mast to move the drive axis in the coordinate system to align the drive axis with an intended drive axis for the foundation component and to control the rotary driver to drive the foundation component into underlying ground along the intended drive axis; and

an alignment jig positioned on the articulating mast, wherein the microcontroller is further programmed to automatically control the articulating mast to position the alignment jig relative to a predetermined point in space.

2. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of motion controllers controllable by the microcontroller and connected to one or more actuators to move the mast.

3. The system according to claim 2 , wherein the mast is articulatable via the plurality of motion controllers and one or more actuators to move with respect to the support vehicle with six degrees of freedom.

4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the predetermined point in space is a work point of a truss foundation including the foundation component.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the foundation component is a screw anchor.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the foundation component is a helical anchor.

7. An automated system for constructing truss foundations for single-axis trackers comprising:

an articulating mast connected to a machine;

a rotary driver positioned on and operable to travel along a drive axis of the articulating mast;

a positioning system for determining a position of the drive axis within a coordinate system;

a microcontroller connected to a plurality of motion controllers to effect movement of the mast, wherein the microcontroller is programmed to control the plurality of motion controllers to orient the mast to align the drive axis with an intended drive axis and to control the rotary driver to drive a foundation component along the intended drive axis so that the driven foundation component points at a predetermined point in space; and

an alignment jig positioned on the mast for holding an apex truss component of a truss foundation during truss assembly, wherein the microcontroller is programmed to orient the mast so that the apex truss component is positioned with respect to the predetermined point in space.

8. The system according to claim 7 , wherein the articulating mast is controllable to move with six degrees of freedom relative to the machine.

9. The system according to claim 7 , wherein the apex truss component is a bearing support.

10. The system according to claim 9 , wherein the predetermined point in space is a work point of the truss foundation.

11. The system according to claim 7 , wherein the apex truss component is a bearing adapter.

12. The system according to claim 7 , wherein the microcontroller is programmed to automatically control the plurality of motion controllers to orient the alignment jig with respect to the driven foundation component and the predetermined point in space to enable an upper leg to interconnect the driven foundation component to the apex truss component.

13. A computerized method of mast alignment for a foundation component driving machine comprising:

with a positioning system, determining a current position of a drive axis of the mast within a coordinate system;

with a microcontroller coupled to the positioning system and a plurality of motion controllers and corresponding actuators, orienting the drive axis of the mast from the current position to a first predetermined drive axis, the first predetermined drive axis passing through a predetermined point in space;

with the microcontroller, controlling a rotary driver on the mast to drive a first foundation component into underlying ground along the first drive axis so that the first foundation component substantially points at the predetermined point in space-, orienting the drive axis of the mast to a second predetermined drive axis, the second drive axis passing through the predetermined point in space, controlling the rotary driver on the mast to drive a second foundation component into underlying ground along the second drive axis so that the second foundation component substantially points at the predetermined point in space; and

after the first and second foundation components have been driven, with the microcontroller, controlling the motion controllers to orient the mast so that an alignment jig on the mast is positioned with respect to the predetermined point in space.

14. The method according to claim 13 , further comprising, placing an apex truss component on the alignment jig and attaching the apex truss component to the first and second foundation components with respective upper legs to form a truss foundation.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the apex truss component is one of a bearing support and a bearing adapter.
