Abstract

A virtual set-top box (vSTB) for executing a middleware component, designed originally for use with the physical STB, including emulating hardware capabilities of the physical STB to process IPTV content received over a connection for presenting the IPTV content on a display of the electronic device.

Claims (27)

1. A method for presenting internet protocol television (IPTV) content on a software platform executing on an electronic device of an end user that receives the IPTV content via a network, the method comprising:

receiving, from the end user, a selection of the IPTV content for display to the end user;

executing, by the end user's electronic device a cross-platform middleware component to process the selected IPTV content, wherein the cross-platform middleware component comprises: a plurality of interfaces for enabling communication between at least a graphics interface and a conditional access (CA) interface, and a dynamic video source selection (DVSS) mechanism that is configured to select a source of the selected IPTV content from a plurality of different content source providers based upon a location of the electronic device within the network, wherein one or more of the plurality of interfaces and the cross-platform middleware component is embedded within a Document Object Model (DOM) of the software platform;

receiving DOM requests by the cross-platform middleware component;

translating, by the cross-platform middleware component, one or more of the DOM requests into an application programming interface (API) request for managing access to the selected IPTV content using the Conditional Access (CA) interface;

selecting, by the DVSS mechanism, one of a plurality of codecs to display the selected IPTV content received from the selected source of the IPTV content;

configuring one or more of the DOM requests into a JavaScript request for supporting the selected codec; and

rendering, using the codec selected by the DVSS mechanism, the selected IPTV content to the end user via the graphics interface.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the CA interface enables features initiated for CA controlled by the content source provider.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

receiving the media content which has been encoded from the content source provider at the cross-platform middleware component; and

decoding the media content using the codec manager with a media interface and a network interface of the cross-platform middleware component.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of interfaces further comprises a system settings interface, and a persistent storage interface.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

wherein the DVSS mechanism is configured with one or more of a PVR controller, an IGMP client, an RTSP client, and a DVB-T client.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the IPTV content on the software platform from an Internet Protocol (IP) closed network.

7. An electronic device operated by an end user to present, on a software platform executing on the electronic device, internet protocol television (IPTV) content that is delivered over a network, the electronic device comprising a processor and a non-transitory data storage configured to store computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, perform an automated process comprising:

receiving, from the end user, a selection of the IPTV content for display to the end user;

executing a cross-platform middleware component to process the selected IPTV content, wherein the cross-platform middleware component comprises: a plurality of interfaces for enabling communication between at least a graphics interface and a conditional access (CA) interface, and a dynamic video source selection (DVSS) mechanism that is configured to select a source of the selected IPTV content from a plurality of different content source providers based upon a location of the electronic device within the network, wherein one or more of the plurality of interfaces and the cross-platform middleware component is embedded within a Document Object Model (DOM) of the software platform;

receiving DOM requests by the cross-platform middleware component;

translating, by the cross-platform middleware component, one or more of the DOM requests into an application programming interface (API) request for managing access to the selected IPTV content using the Conditional Access (CA) interface;

selecting, by the DVSS mechanism, one of a plurality of codecs to display the selected IPTV content received from the selected source of the IPTV content;

configuring one or more of the DOM requests into a JavaScript request for supporting the selected codec; and

rendering, using the codec selected by the DVSS mechanism, the selected IPTV content to the end user via the graphics interface.

8. The electronic device of claim 7 wherein the DVSS mechanism is configured with one or more of a PVR controller, an IGMP client, an RTSP client, and a DVB-T client.

9. The electronic device of claim 7 wherein the IPTV content is received on the software platform from an Internet Protocol (IP) closed network.
