Abstract

A machine is configured to identify a media file that, when played to a user, is likely to modify an emotional or physical state of the user to or towards a target emotional or physical state. The machine accesses play counts that quantify playbacks of media files for the user. The playbacks may be locally performed or detected by the machine from ambient sound. The machine accesses arousal scores of the media files and determines a distribution of the play counts over the arousal scores. The machine uses one or more relative maxima in the distribution in selecting a target arousal score for the user based on contextual data that describes an activity of the user. The machine selects one or more media files based on the target arousal score. The machine may then cause the selected media file to be played to the user.

Claims (73)

1. A system comprising:

a sensor in a vehicle to generate sensor data indicative of an interaction between a user and the vehicle, the interaction defining a characteristic of a user input relative to a component of the vehicle; and

a media selector machine to:

detect a driving condition based on the sensor data;

select a target user state score for the user based on the driving condition and a maximum peak relative to peaks in a distribution, the distribution including a mapping of media play counts to previous corresponding state scores; and

select, as a selected audio media file, one of a plurality of audio media files to present to the user based on the target user state score.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the media selector machine is to:

access user state scores of the audio media files; and

select the selected audio media file based on the user state score of the selected audio media file and the target user state score.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor data is indicative of a fluctuation in a force applied on a steering wheel, the media selector machine to detect the driving condition based on the fluctuation in the force applied on the steering wheel.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor data is indicative of use of windshield wipers, the media selector machine to detect the driving condition based on the use of the windshield wipers.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor data is indicative of a brake pedal depression frequency, the media selector machine to detect the driving condition based on the brake pedal depression frequency.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor data is indicative of a vehicle direction change frequency, the media selector machine to detect the driving condition based on the vehicle direction change frequency.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor data is indicative of use of vehicle climate control, the media selector machine to detect the driving condition based on the user of the vehicle climate control.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the media selector machine is to output the selected audio media file for presentation to the user.

9. A system comprising:

a sensor in a vehicle;

a media selector machine to:

detect a driving condition based on data generated by the sensor; and

select, as a selected audio media file, one of a plurality of audio media files to present to a driver based on the driving condition; and

a play count accessor to access play counts that quantify playback of one or more of the audio media files, wherein the media selector machine is to:

compare play counts of the audio media files to a threshold number of playbacks;

categorize respective ones of the audio media files as familiar media files when the corresponding play counts satisfy the threshold number of playbacks;

categorize respective ones of the audio media files as unfamiliar media files when the corresponding play counts do not satisfy the threshold number of playbacks; and

select the selected audio media file based on the selected audio media file being a familiar media file or an unfamiliar media file.

10. A non-transitory machine readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause at least one machine to at least:

detect a driving condition based on sensor data generated by a sensor in a vehicle, the sensor data indicative of an interaction between a user and the vehicle, the interaction defining a characteristic of a user input relative to a component of the vehicle;

determine a target user state score for the user based on the driving condition and a maximum peak relative to peaks in a distribution, the distribution including a mapping of media play counts to previous corresponding state scores; and

select, as a selected audio media file, one of a plurality of audio media files to present to the user based on the target user state score.

11. The storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the machine to:

access user state scores of the audio media files; and

select the selected audio media file based on the user state score of the selected audio media file and the target user state score.

12. The storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the sensor data is indicative of a fluctuation in a force applied on a steering wheel.

13. The storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the sensor data is indicative of use of windshield wipers.

14. The storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the sensor data is indicative of a brake pedal depression frequency.

15. The storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the sensor data is indicative of a vehicle direction change frequency.

16. The storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the sensor data is indicative of use of vehicle climate control.

17. The storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the machine to output the selected audio media file for presentation to the user.

18. A non-transitory machine readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause at least one machine to at least:

access driving condition data generated by a sensor in a vehicle;

select, as a selected audio media file, one of a plurality of audio media files to present to a driver based on the driving condition data;

access play counts that quantify playback of one or more of the audio media files;

compare play counts of the audio media files to a threshold number of playbacks;

categorize respective ones of the audio media files as familiar media files when the corresponding play counts satisfy the threshold number of playbacks;

categorize respective ones of the audio media files as unfamiliar media files when the corresponding play counts do not satisfy the threshold number of playbacks; and

select the selected audio media file based on the selected audio media file being a familiar media file or an unfamiliar media file.

19. An apparatus comprising:

memory;

instructions; and

processor circuitry to execute the instructions to:

detect a driving condition based on sensor data generated by a sensor in a vehicle, the sensor data indicative of an interaction between a user and the vehicle, the interaction defining a characteristic of a user input relative to a component of the vehicle;
