Abstract

A fastener cartridge can include, one, a cartridge body comprising a deck and a plurality of fastener cavities and, two, a plurality of fasteners positioned in the fastener cavities. The cartridge body can further comprise extensions extending from the deck having different sizes and/or configurations. The extensions can control the flow of tissue relative to the deck and/or support the fasteners as they are ejected from the fastener cavities.

Claims (45)

1. A staple cartridge for use with an anvil, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck defining a first stepped tissue-contacting surface and a second stepped tissue-contacting surface;

a longitudinal slot;

first staple cavities defined in said first stepped tissue-contacting surface, wherein said first staple cavities are arranged in a first row adjacent to said longitudinal slot; and

second staple cavities defined in said second stepped tissue-contacting surface, wherein said second staple cavities are laterally offset from said first staple cavities, and wherein said second staple cavities are arranged in a second row adjacent to said first row;

staples removably stored in said first staple cavities and said second staple cavities;

first extensions at least partially surrounding said first staple cavities, wherein said first extensions comprise a first height from said first stepped tissue-contacting surface; and

second extensions at least partially surrounding said second staple cavities, wherein said second extensions comprise a second height from said second stepped tissue-contacting surface, wherein said second height is different than said first height.

2. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said second height is greater than said first height.

3. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said second height is less than said first height.

4. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said first stepped tissue-contacting surface defines a first tissue gap distance between said cartridge body and the anvil.

5. The staple cartridge of claim 4 , wherein said second stepped tissue-contacting surface defines a second tissue gap distance between said cartridge body and the anvil, wherein said second tissue gap distance is different than said first tissue gap distance.

6. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said first stepped tissue-contacting surface and said second stepped tissue-contacting surface are configured to control tissue flow relative to said cartridge body.

7. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein each of said first extensions surround a corresponding one of said first staple cavities, and wherein each of said second extensions surround a corresponding one of said second staple cavities.

8. A staple cartridge for use with an anvil, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a stepped deck defining a first tissue-contacting surface and a second tissue-contacting surface;

a longitudinal slot;

first staple cavities defined in said first tissue-contacting surface, wherein said first staple cavities define a first row adjacent to said longitudinal slot; and

second staple cavities defined in said second tissue-contacting surface, wherein said second staple cavities are laterally offset from said first staple cavities and wherein said second staple cavities define a second row adjacent to said first row;

staples removably stored in said first staple cavities and said second staple cavities;

first projections at least partially surrounding said first staple cavities, wherein said first projections comprise a first height from said first tissue-contacting surface; and

second projections at least partially surrounding said second staple cavities, wherein said second projections comprise a second height from said second tissue-contacting surface, wherein said second height is different than said first height.

9. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said second height is greater than said first height.

10. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said second height is less than said first height.

11. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said first tissue-contacting surface defines a first tissue gap distance between said cartridge body and the anvil.

12. The staple cartridge of claim 11 , wherein said second tissue-contacting surface defines a second tissue gap distance between said cartridge body and the anvil, and wherein said second tissue gap distance is different than said first tissue gap distance.

13. The staple cartridge of claim 12 , wherein each of said first projections surround a corresponding one of said first staple cavities, and wherein each of said second projections surround a corresponding one of said second staple cavities.

14. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said first tissue-contacting surface and said second tissue-contacting surface are configured to control tissue flow relative to said cartridge body.

15. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

an anvil;

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck defining a first tissue-contacting surface and a second tissue-contacting surface;

a longitudinal slot;

first staple cavities defined in said first tissue-contacting surface, wherein said first staple cavities define a first row adjacent to said longitudinal slot; and

second staple cavities defined in said second tissue-contacting surface, wherein said second staple cavities are laterally offset from said first staple cavities and wherein said second staple cavities define a second row adjacent to said first row;

staples removably stored in said first staple cavities and said second staple cavities;

first extensions surrounding said first staple cavities, wherein said first extensions comprise a first height from said first tissue-contacting surface; and

second extensions surrounding said second staple cavities, wherein said second extensions comprise a second height from said second tissue-contacting surface, wherein said second height is different than said first height.

16. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 15 , wherein said second height is greater than said first height.

17. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 15 , wherein said second height is less than said first height.

18. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 15 , wherein said first tissue-contacting surface defines a first tissue gap distance between said cartridge body and said anvil.

19. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 18 , wherein said second tissue-contacting surface defines a second tissue gap distance between said cartridge body and said anvil, and wherein said second tissue gap distance is different than said first tissue gap distance.

20. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 15 , wherein said first tissue-contacting surface and said second tissue-contacting surface are configured to control tissue flow relative to said cartridge body.
