Abstract

A mask seal test method, device, and system of using the same are described herein. One method for testing a mask seal can include blocking a respirator cartridge to create pressure within a mask, wherein the mask includes a pressure sensor, measuring pressure values within the mask using the pressure sensor, and notifying a user in response to an increased pressure decay value among the pressure values received by the mask identification reader.

Claims (39)

1. A method for testing a mask seal on a mask, comprising:

setting a threshold pressure decay based in part on an environment in which the mask is to be used;

blocking an inlet or outlet of the mask to create pressure difference between the air within the mask and the air outside the mask, wherein the mask includes a pressure sensor;

measuring pressure values within the mask using the pressure sensor, wherein the pressure sensor further comprises a power source and is configured to detect a leak in the mask seal without a mask identification reader;

receiving, by the mask identification reader associated with the mask, pressure values from the pressure sensor; and

notifying a user in response to an increased pressure decay value among the pressure values received by the mask identification reader when a pressure decay exceeds the threshold pressure decay.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pressure values includes measuring vacuum decay values, wherein the vacuum decay values indicate air leaking into the mask and a leak severity associated with the mask.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

recording a vacuum decay value among the pressure values within the mask; and

tracking the increased vacuum decay value associated with the mask.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising identifying a particular respirator mask using a unique identifier.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mask identification reader provides power for the pressure sensor to communicate the pressure values.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the power source is a battery.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein notifying the user in response to the increased pressure decay value among the pressure values includes at least one of illuminating a light on the mask, a vibration, a buzzer, and an audio message.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pressure within the mask is measured over time to determine a leakage rate into the mask between a skirt of the mask and a user's face over a period of time, and wherein the skirt of the mask forms a substantially air-tight seal with the face of the user.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the leakage rate is determined between the skirt of the mask and the face of the user, comprising:

receiving, from the mask, a mask identifier and pressure values within an inner volume of the mask over a duration of time when the mask is abutting a user's face and forehead and at least one of an inlet and an outlet of the mask are blocked against communication of air there through;

determining, based upon the pressure values, whether the increased pressure decay has occurred over said duration of time; and

in an instance in which the increased pressure decay has occurred over said duration of time, notifying a user of the increased pressure decay.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the pressure values comprise vacuum decay values measured by the pressure sensor, wherein the vacuum decay values indicate air leaking into the mask during said time and a leak severity associated with the mask.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the pressure sensor configured to directly measure the pressure within the inner volume of the mask.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising transmitting the increased pressure decay and the mask identifier to a local or network connected database of mask seal test results.

13. A method comprising:

setting a threshold pressure decay based in part on an environment in which a mask is to be used;

determining, based upon a baseline pressure within the mask being above a threshold pressure, that at least one of an inlet or an outlet of the mask are blocked against airflow therethrough and that the mask is properly worn by a wearer, the mask having a skirt that forms a substantially air-tight seal with the face of the wearer;

in an instance in which the mask is determined to be properly worn by the wearer and the at least one of the inlet or the outlet of the mask are blocked against airflow therethrough, sensing, using one or more pressure sensors, pressure values indicative of changes in the pressure within the mask over a duration of time, wherein one or more pressure sensors comprise a battery and are configurable to operate with or without a mask identification reader;

determining, based upon the pressure values, whether a pressure decay exceeds the threshold pressure decay during said duration of time; and

in an instance in which the pressure decay exceeds the threshold pressure decay during said duration of time, causing notification that the mask has a leak between the skirt and the face of the wearer.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the pressure values comprise vacuum decay values measured by the one or more pressure sensors, wherein the vacuum decay values indicate air leaking into the mask over said duration of time and a leak severity associated with the mask.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

recording one or more vacuum decay values among the pressure values; and

tracking the one or more vacuum decay values associated with the mask.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

transmitting information indicative of the pressure decay and a mask identifier to a local or network connected database of mask seal test results.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein said causing notification that the mask has a leak comprises at least one of:

illuminating a light on the mask,

initiating a vibration,

initiating a buzzer, or

causing playback of an audio message.
