Abstract

Embodiments described herein detect on-the-fly whether requested subclient data resides on a certain type of storage device, such as cloned Windows Dynamic Disks. The system presents mount requests for the identified disks in a manner that allows for mounting of the disks, where the disks would not be otherwise mountable. For instance, in some embodiments the information management system generates substitute metadata for disk mounting purposes, such as for the purposes of browsing and/or restoring data.

Claims (41)

1. A method of obtaining from secondary copy data from secondary storage in a data browsing operation, the method comprising:

with one or more computing devices:

receiving a request to obtain secondary copy data from secondary storage for use in a browsing operation, wherein the secondary copy data resides on one or more storage devices including storage devices of a first type and storage devices of a second type different than the first type;

generating first substitute metadata associated with a first storage device of the one or more storage devices having the first type;

generating second substitute metadata associated with a second storage device of the one or more storage devices having the second type;

mounting the first and second storage devices using the first and second substitute metadata;

using original metadata associated with at least one additional storage device of the one or more storage devices, mounting the additional storage device, wherein the additional storage device has the second type; and

using the mounted first storage device, the mounted second storage device, and the mounted additional storage device to obtain the requested secondary copy data from the secondary storage.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second storage device is a copy of the first storage device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein storage devices of the first type of storage device have different formatting than storage devices of the second type of storage device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first storage device is a first physical drive, and the second storage device is a second physical drive.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second substitute metadata and the original metadata comprise disk identifiers.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising replacing original metadata for the first storage device and the second storage device with the first and second substitute metadata in a data structure.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising copying the original metadata for the first storage device and the second storage device to a storage location prior to said replacing, and using the copied original metadata for use in the browsing operation subsequent to said replacing.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first type of storage device is a Windows Dynamic disk and the second type of storage device is a Windows Basic disk and the second storage device is a clone of the first storage device.

9. An information management system comprising:

a secondary storage computing system comprising one or more computing devices configured to:

receive a request to obtain secondary copy data from secondary storage for use in a browsing operation, wherein the secondary copy data resides on one or more storage devices including storage devices of a first type and storage devices of a second type different than the first type;

generate first substitute metadata associated with a first storage device of the one or more storage devices having the first type;

generate second substitute metadata associated with a second storage device of the one or more storage devices having the second type;

mount the first and second storage devices using the first and second substitute metadata;

using original metadata associated with at least one additional storage device of the one or more storage devices, mount the additional storage device, wherein the additional storage device has the second type; and

obtain the requested secondary copy data from the secondary storage using the mounted first storage device, the mounted second storage device, and the mounted additional storage device.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second storage device is a copy of the first storage device.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein storage devices of the first type of storage device have different formatting than storage devices of the second type of storage device.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first storage device is a first physical drive, and the second storage device is a second physical drive.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first and second substitute metadata and the original metadata comprise disk identifiers.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first substitute metadata is a unique identifier for the first storage device, the second substitute metadata is a unique identifier for the second storage device, and wherein original metadata for the first storage device includes an identifier that is the same as original metadata for the second storage device.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more computing devices are further configured to replace original metadata for the first storage device and the second storage device with the first and second substitute metadata in a data structure.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more computing devices are further configured to copy the original metadata for the first storage device and the second storage device to a storage location prior to replacing the original metadata, and using the copied original metadata in the browsing operation subsequent to the replacement of the original metadata.

17. The system of claim 9 , wherein storage devices of the first type of storage device have different formatting than storage devices of the second type of storage device.

18. One or more non-transitory computer readable storage media storing instructions that, when executed by at least one computing device in an information management system, cause the computing device to perform operations comprising:

receiving a request to obtain secondary copy data from secondary storage for use in a browsing operation, wherein the secondary copy data resides on one or more storage devices including storage devices of a first type and storage devices of a second type different than the first type;

generating first substitute metadata associated with a first storage device of the one or more storage devices having the first type;

generating second substitute metadata associated with a second storage device of the one or more storage devices having the second type;

mounting the first and second storage devices using the first and second substitute metadata;

using original metadata associated with at least one additional storage device of the one or more storage devices, mounting the additional storage device, wherein the additional storage device has the second type; and

obtaining the requested secondary copy data using the mounted first storage device, the mounted second storage device, and the mounted additional storage device.

19. The non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 18 , wherein the second storage device is a copy of the first storage device.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 18 , wherein storage devices of the first type of storage device have different formatting than storage devices of the second type of storage device.

21. The non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 18 , wherein the first storage device is a first physical drive, and the second storage device is a second physical drive.
