Abstract

Methods and apparatus for performing timed functions in battery-powered, wireless electronic devices, such as sensors or control modules. Such electronic devices comprise a main processor and a co-processor. When the main processor enters a quiescent state in order to preserve battery life, one or more timed functions are transferred from the main processor to the co-processor just before the main processor enters the quiescent state. When the co-processor determines that it is time to perform the timed function, the co-processor wakes the main processor in order for the main processor to perform the timed function.

Claims (56)

1. A battery-powered, wireless electronic device, comprising:

a detector for detecting an event in proximity to the electronic device;

a transceiver for transmitting and receiving messages;

a first memory for storing main processor-executable instructions;

a second memory for storing co-processor-executable instructions;

a main processor coupled to the detector, the first memory and the transceiver for executing the main processor-executable instructions; and

a co-processor coupled to the second memory for executing the co-processor-executable instructions that causes the co-processor to:

receive a message from the main processor, the message comprising an indication that the main processor is entering a quiescent state and a parameter associated with a timed function performed by the main processor when the main processor is not in the quiescent state;

start a timer in response to receiving the message; and

wake the main processor upon expiration of the timer.

2. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the timed function comprises periodic transmission of a heartbeat signal, and the parameter comprises a time remaining until the heartbeat signal should be transmitted by the transceiver.

3. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the co-processor instructions that causes the co-processor to wake the main processor comprises instructions that causes the co-processor to:

send an interrupt to the main processor;

send an identification of the timed function to the main processor; and

send an updated parameter associated with the timed function;

wherein the main processor performs the timed function using the updated parameter provided by the co-processor.

4. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device further comprises:

an indicator coupled to the main processor;

wherein the timed function comprises illuminating the indicator, and the parameter comprises a time remaining to extinguish the indicator.

5. The electronic device of claim 3 , wherein the electronic device further comprises:

an indicator coupled to the main processor;

wherein the timed function comprises illuminating the indicator, and the parameter comprises a duration time to illuminate the indicator.

6. The electronic device of claim 4 , wherein the co-processor instructions that causes the co-processor to wake the main processor comprises further instructions that causes the co-processor to:

send a second parameter associated with the timed function to the main processor, the second parameter comprising a number of remaining times to illuminate the indicator.

7. The electronic device of claim 5 , wherein the co-processor instructions that causes the co-processor to wake the main processor comprises further instructions that causes the co-processor to:

send a second parameter associated with the timed function to the main processor, the second parameter comprising a number of remaining times to illuminate the indicator.

8. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the main processor-executable instructions comprise instructions that causes the main processor to:

retrieve, from the first memory, the parameter;

generate the message, comprising the indication and the parameter;

send the message to the co-processor; and

cause the main processor, the first memory and the transceiver to enter the quiescent state;

wherein the parameter is erased from the first memory after the main processor enters the quiescent state.

9. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the timed function comprises retransmitting a status message previously transmitted by the transceiver, and the parameter comprises a time to retransmit the status message.

10. A method for performing timed functions in a battery-powered, wireless electronic device having a transceiver and a co-processor coupled to a main processor, comprising:

receiving by the co-processor from the main processor a message comprising an indication that the main processor has entered a quiescent state and a parameter associated with a timed function performed by the main processor when the main processor is not in the quiescent state;

starting by the co-processor a timer in response to receiving the message; and

waking by the co-processor the main processor upon expiration of the timer.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the timed function comprises periodic transmission of a heartbeat signal, and the parameter comprises a time remaining until the heartbeat signal should be transmitted by the transceiver.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein waking the main processor comprises:

sending, by the co-processor, an interrupt to the main processor;

sending, by the co-processor, an identification of the timed function to the main processor; and

sending, by the co-processor, an updated parameter associated with the timed function to the main processor;

wherein the main processor performs the timed function using the updated parameter provided by the co-processor.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the timed function comprises illuminating an indicator coupled to the main processor, and the parameter comprises a time remaining to extinguish the indicator.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the timed function comprises illuminating an indicator coupled to the main processor, and the parameter comprises a duration time to illuminate the indicator.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein waking the main processor by the co-processor comprises:

sending, by the co-processor, a second parameter associated with the timed function to the main processor, the second parameter comprising a number of remaining times to illuminate the indicator.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein waking the main processor comprises:

sending, by the co-processor, a second parameter associated with the timed function to the main processor, the second parameter comprising a number of remaining times to illuminate the indicator.

17. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

retrieving, by the main processor from the first memory, the parameter;

generating, by the main processor, the message, comprising the indication and the parameter;

sending, by the main processor, the message to the co-processor; and

causing, by the main processor, the first memory and the transceiver to enter the quiescent state;

wherein the parameter is erased from the first memory after the first memory enters the quiescent state.

18. The electronic device of claim 10 , wherein the timed function comprises retransmitting a status message previously transmitted by the transceiver, and the parameter comprises a time to retransmit the status message.
