Proppant dispensing system with intermediate surge hopper
A proppant container facilitates the transportation of wet sand for use in a hydraulic fracturing operation. A metering conveyor is positioned between a blender tub and a proppant motive mechanism, such as a conveyor or wash system that receives discharge direct from proppant containers of the type normally used to transport sand in support of a hydraulic fracturing operation. The metering conveyor is fitted with equipment including an intermediate surge hopper with a vibration system and a knife-edge gate that may be used to facilitate the operational movement of sand.
1. A surge hopper system comprising;
a conveyor having a belt;
a surge hopper including a frame supporting
a plurality of sidewalls that taper downwardly towards a bottom discharge opening positioned to discharge directly onto the belt of the conveyor,
a top opening for the receipt of proppant therethrough,
there being an interior flow passageway between the top opening and the bottom discharge opening;
a vibrator mounted on the frame of the surge hopper to facilitate flow of proppant through the interior flow passageway; and
a proppant motive system configured to move wet sand into the surge hopper,
the frame of the surge hopper rising upwardly from a ground surface to support the surge hopper,
the surge hopper standing alone without physically contacting any other equipment.
2. The surge hopper system of claim 1 , further comprising a wire mesh covering the top opening for removal of debris from proppant.
3. The surge hopper system of claim 2 , wherein the wire mesh is sized to remove debris that would interfere with operation of a frac pump but permits other particles to pass.
4. The surge hopper system of claim 2 , wherein the wire mesh is sized to remove debris having a minimum dimension ranging from about 1/16 to ½ inch.
5. The surge hopper system of claim 2 , wherein the wire mesh is sized to remove debris having a minimum dimension ranging from about ⅛ to ¼ inch.
6. The surge hopper system of claim 2 , wherein the wire mesh has a screen size ranging from, a U.S. mesh of from 2 to 14.
7. The surge hopper system of claim 1 , wherein the wire mesh has a screen size ranging from, a U.S. mesh of from 3 to 6.

The surge hopper system of claim 1 , further comprising a knife edge gate located proximate the bottom discharge opening, the knife edge gate being formed a s a plate having a straight bottom edge that is fixedly clamped to the surge hopper proximate the bottom discharge opening, whereby in use the bottom discharge opening and knife-edge gate dispense a ribbon of proppant having a uniform thickness.
9. A method of hydraulic fracturing to stimulate a well, comprising;
using the surge hopper system of claim 1 to guide proppant movement during a hydraulic fracturing operation.
