Abstract

A system and method of transferring data generated at a data source to a dictation system for use by the dictation system to generate reports are disclosed. One example method includes parsing the data to retrieve values from the data that match a field in a formatting template. The matching values are then normalized based on format settings configured in the formatting template. A range of values may be added to one or more fields in the formatting template. For values that match the fields associated with the range of values, it is determined if the values fall outside the range of values. Upon positive determination, the values may be further formatted by adding an indicator marking that the values are out of bounds from the range of values. The formatted values are then sent to the dictation system for use by the dictation system in generating reports.

Claims (54)

1. A computing system, comprising:

a processor; and

computer-readable memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform acts comprising:

receiving, by the processor through a plurality of ports and one or more network interfaces, clinical data that has been generated by a plurality of modalities, wherein the clinical data is formatted in a standardized clinical format, and further wherein the clinical data comprises a value;

placing Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) messages from the plurality of modalities into matching groups based on the plurality of ports;

assigning a formatting template to a matching group of the matching groups, wherein the formatting template normalizes incoming messages belonging to the matching group based on the formatting template;

retrieving, via the processor, the formatting template, wherein the formatting template comprises:

a field that is associated with the value; and

an indication of a modification that is to be applied to the value in order for the value to be included in a report generated by a dictation system;

parsing, via the processor, the clinical data based upon the field in the formatting template in order to retrieve the value in the clinical data;

applying, via the processor, the modification to the value specified in the formatting template to produce a modified value; and

sending, via the processor, the modified value to the dictation system, and generating the report by using the dictation system based upon the modified value, wherein the report includes the modified value and the indication of the modification, the indication comprising an out of bounds indicator.

2. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the computing system receives the clinical data that has been generated by the plurality of modalities by way of a sending application that is associated with the plurality of modalities, wherein the out of bounds indicator is added to the report by the formatting template, and in response to a positive determination that the modified value falling outside of a range of values, the modified value is further formatted by marking that the modified value is out of bounds from the range of values.

3. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the clinical data has a type assigned thereto, wherein the computing system retrieves the formatting template from amongst a plurality of formatting templates based upon the type assigned to the clinical data, wherein the formatting template is assigned to the type.

4. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the computing system receives the clinical data from the plurality of modalities, the acts further comprising:

prior to receiving the clinical data, registering the plurality of modalities with the computing system.

5. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the field and the indication of the modification in the formatting template have been created by a user prior to the computing system retrieving the formatting template.

6. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the dictation system automatically populates a field in a report template with the modified value, thereby generating the report.

7. A method executed by a processor of a computing system, comprising:

receiving, via the processor through a plurality of ports and one or more network interfaces, clinical data that has been generated by a plurality of modalities, wherein the clinical data is formatted in a standardized clinical format, and further wherein the clinical data comprises a value that is indicative of a measurement taken of a body part of a patient;

placing Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) messages from the plurality of modalities into matching groups based on the plurality of ports;

assigning a formatting template to a matching group of the matching groups, wherein the formatting template normalizes incoming messages belonging to the matching group based on the formatting template;

retrieving, via the processor, a formatting template, wherein the formatting template comprises:

a field that is associated with the value; and

an indication of a modification that is to be applied to the value in order for the value to be included in a report generated by a dictation system;

parsing, via the processor, the clinical data based upon the field in the formatting template in order to retrieve the value in the clinical data;

applying, via the processor, the modification to the value specified in the formatting template to produce a modified value; and

sending, via the processor, the modified value to the dictation system, and generating the report by using the dictation system based upon the modified value, wherein the report includes the modified value and the indication of the modification, the indication comprising an out of bounds indicator.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

prior to retrieving the formatting template, generating the formatting template, wherein generating the formatting template comprises receiving, from a computing device operated by a user, the field that is associated with the value and the indication of the modification.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the dictation system causes the report to be presented to a user on a display.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the dictation system automatically populates a field in a report template with the modified value, thereby generating the report.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of modalities comprises an ultrasound machine, a mammography machine, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine, a computed tomography machine, or an x-ray machine.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the modification comprises converting the value from a first format to a second format.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a processor of a computing system, cause the processor to perform acts comprising:

receiving, via the processor through a plurality of ports and one or more network interfaces, clinical data that has been generated by a plurality of modalities, wherein the clinical data is formatted in a standardized clinical format, wherein the clinical data has a type assigned thereto, and further wherein the clinical data comprises a value;

placing Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) messages from the plurality of modalities into matching groups based on the plurality of ports;

assigning a formatting template to a matching group of the matching groups, wherein the formatting template normalizes incoming messages belonging to the matching group based on the formatting template;

retrieving, via the processor, a formatting template from amongst a plurality of formatting templates based upon the type assigned to the clinical data, the formatting template is assigned to the type, wherein the formatting template comprises:

a field that is associated with the value; and

an indication of a modification that is to be applied to the value in order for the value to be included in a report generated by a dictation system;

parsing, via the processor, the clinical data based upon the field in the formatting template in order to retrieve the value in the clinical data;

applying, via the processor, the modification to the value specified in the formatting template to produce a modified value; and

sending, via the processor, the modified value to the dictation system, and generating the report by using the dictation system based upon the modified value, wherein the report includes the modified value and the indication of the modification, the indication comprising an out of bounds indicator.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , the acts further comprising:

responsive to retrieving the formatting template, determining whether the formatting template is enabled, wherein parsing the clinical data and applying the modification to the value are performed when the formatting template is enabled, wherein the value is sent to the dictation system when the formatting template is not enabled.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the modification comprises:

converting the value from a first case to a second case;

extracting a portion of the value; and

replacing the value with a second value or rounding the value to a specified number of decimal places.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the standardized clinical format is Health Level-7 (HL7).

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the field and the indication of the modification in the formatting template have been created by a user prior to the computing system retrieving the formatting template.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the dictation system automatically populates a field in a report template with the modified value, thereby generating the report.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the modification causes the value to be mapped to the field in the report template.
