Abstract

A see-through transparent (or semi-transparent) near eye optical module includes a transparent sparsely populated near eye display comprising a plurality of pixels or pixel patches and a sparsely populated micro-lens array comprising a plurality of micro-lenses positioned in optical alignment with the plurality of pixels or pixel patches of the sparsely populated transparent near eye display. The sparsely populated transparent near eye display has a pixel fill factor capable of rendering the near eye display at least partially transparent. Light rays originating from outside the transparent sparsely populated near eye module pass through the transparent sparsely populated near eye display and sparsely populated micro-lens array of the transparent near eye module to an eye of a user to form a real image perceived by the user. The transparent sparsely populated near eye display further produces light rays generated by way of active pixels which pass through aligned micro-lenses to form a virtual image perceived by the eye of the user. The combination of the real image with the virtual images as perceived by the eye of a user causes the perception of Augmented Reality or Mixed Reality for the user. Light rays being projected away from the eye of the user are reduced or blocked by the transparent near eye display.

Claims (26)

1. A hermetically sealed optical module, the optical module comprising an eye-facing side and a real world-facing side connected by sides or edges to create a sealed interior cavity, wherein the sealed interior cavity of the optical module encloses a see-through near eye display, the enclosed see-through near eye display comprising (a) a plurality of patches of pixels populating a transparent or semi-transparent substrate, and (b) a microlens array comprising a plurality of microlenses;

wherein spaces between the plurality of patches of pixels and spaces between the plurality of microlenses allow real world light to pass therebetween, allowing the see-through near eye display to provide a perception of augmented reality to a user of the hermetically sealed optical module;

wherein one or more wire or flex cable connects the enclosed see-through near eye display to a power source and/or a processor, and wherein a location where the one or more wire or flex cable enters the optical module is hermetically sealed;

wherein where the sides or edges of the optical module meet the eye-facing side and the real-world facing side are hermetically sealed; and

wherein the optical module is at least one of supported by, attached to, or embedded in, an optic or an optic frame.

2. The see-through near eye display of claim 1 , wherein the see-though near eye display is incorporated in an optical module, wherein the optical module is optionally attached to an eyewear lens or a substrate.

3. The see-through near eye display of claim 1 , wherein the see-through near eye display is located peripheral to a line of sight of the user when the user is looking straight ahead with normal gaze.

4. The see-through near eye display of claim 1 , wherein an angle where the see-through near eye display meets an eyewear lens or a substrate is about 80 to 100 degrees.

5. The see-through near eye display of claim 1 , wherein the electrical bus is connected to a flex cable.

6. The see-through near eye display of claim 1 , wherein the electrical bus is connected to a circuit.

7. The see-through near eye display of claim 1 , wherein the electrical bus is located peripheral to the user's pupil when the user is looking through the see-through near eye display.

8. The see-through near eye display of claim 1 , wherein the see-through near eye display is supported by a see-through near eye optical module.

9. The see-through near eye display of claim 1 , wherein the see-through near eye display is aligned with and distance spaced from a micro-lens array.

10. The hermetically sealed optical module of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of patches of pixels comprise micro-Light Emitting Diodes (iLight Emitting Diodes).

11. The hermetically sealed optical module of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of patches of pixels comprise Organic Light Emitting Diodes.

12. The hermetically sealed optical module of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of patches of pixels comprise Transparent Organic Light Emitting Diodes.

13. The hermetically sealed optical module of claim 1 , wherein pixels in the patches of pixels of the plurality of patches of pixels have a size of 5 microns or less.

14. The hermetically sealed optical module of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of patches of pixels are arranged as tiles of patches of pixels.

15. The hermetically sealed optical module of claim 1 , wherein the enclosed see-through near eye display further includes a light blocking element aligned on a side of a patch of pixels of the plurality of patches of pixels farthest away from an eye of the user of the hermetically sealed optical module.

16. The hermetically sealed optical module of claim 1 , wherein the enclosed see-through near eye display further includes a light intensity reducing filter located on a side of the enclosed see-through near eye display closest to an eye of the user of the hermetically sealed optical module.

17. The optical module of claim 1 , wherein the see-through near eye display further includes a light intensity reducing filter located between the see-through near eye display and the microlens array.

18. The hermetically sealed optical module of claim 1 , wherein the enclosed see-through near eye display further includes a light intensity reducing filter located between the enclosed see-through near eye display and an eye of the user of the hermetically sealed optical module.

19. The see-through near eye display of claim 1 , further comprising an electrical connector, wherein a portion of the electrical connector is located superior to the see-through near eye display.

20. The see-through near eye display of claim 1 , further comprising an electrical connector, wherein a portion of the electrical connector is located temporal to the see-through near eye display.

21. The hermetically sealed optical module of claim 1 , wherein light emitting from the enclosed see-through near eye display to an eye of the user of the hermetically sealed optical module is filtered by a blue light filter.

22. The hermetically sealed optical module of claim 1 , wherein the optic is one or more of a lens, an eyewear lens, a corrective lens, a non-corrective lens, a protective lens, a visor lens, a helmet lens, a transparent or semi-transparent shield, and a transparent or semi-transparent see-through material.
