Abstract

A client determines that a user is attempting to access media program recommendations. In response to the determination, the client attempts to collect media program recommendations to be presented to the user. Media program recommendations may be derived locally by the client, by the client and a multimedia device locally connected with the client, by the client and one or more additional devices, etc. In some embodiments, in response to receiving a query from the client, one or more recipient devices or servers identify media program recommendations in a plurality of trending categories. The media program recommendations may be selected based at least in part on EPG data and audience research and measurement data. The media program recommendations collected by the client are presented to the user for further exploration. The client may be one of mobile phones, tablet computers, etc.

Claims (46)

1. A method for providing trending media asset recommendations, the method comprising:

identifying a plurality of trending categories;

identifying respective media assets associated with each trending category of the plurality of trending categories that have not been provided to a group of client devices;

assigning a future popularity score to each of the identified media assets for each of the trending categories;

receiving a particular query from a client device of the group of client devices, wherein the particular query comprises an indication of a preferred order for the trending categories; and

in response to receiving the particular query from the client device:

generating a plurality of media asset recommendations comprising at least an identified media asset having a highest future popularity score for each of the plurality of trending categories;

ordering the plurality of trending categories, associated with the plurality of media asset recommendations, according to the particular query and each of the assigned future popularity scores, wherein the ordering of the plurality of trending categories according to the particular query is based at least in part on the preferred order; and

causing to be displayed, based at least in part on the ordering and based at least in part on the preferred order, the plurality of trending categories and the respective media asset recommendations for the plurality of trending categories.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

accessing program trending data over a network connection; and

obtaining a past popularity score for each respective media asset associated with each trending category of the plurality of trending categories;

wherein each respective future popularity score is equal to the past popularity score.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising collecting program trending data from one or more user populations, wherein the program trending data comprises a plurality of individual program trending data portions, and wherein each portion is specific to a given user or plurality of users.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the program trending data is collected from a data source selected from a group consisting of multimedia devices, client devices, third party systems, and media subscriptions servers.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the plurality of media asset recommendations further comprises generating future trending predictions based on information about media assets that are of varying degrees of popularity in a past or present audience.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the future trending predictions indicate a number of viewers attracted by each respective media asset.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the group of client devices is a first group of client devices, and the past or present audience comprises a representative audience in a second group of client devices on which the media asset has already been viewed or is being viewed.

The method of claim 5 , wherein the future trending predictions are derived from a source selected from a group consisting of current viewing activities of a representative audience, scheduled recordings of a representative audience, real-time activity of a search engine, and real-time messages on a social network.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving filter settings from a user, and wherein generating the plurality of media asset recommendations is further based on the received filter settings.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the particular query is received from the client device in response to the client device receiving user input; and

after the particular query is received from the client device, each of the generating of the plurality of media asset recommendations, the ordering of the plurality of trending categories and the causing to be displayed the plurality of trending categories and the respective media asset recommendations for the plurality of trending categories, is performed without the client device receiving further user input.

11. A system for providing trending media asset recommendations, the system comprising:

output circuitry; and

control circuitry configured to:

identify a plurality of trending categories;

identify respective media assets associated with each trending category of the plurality of trending categories that have not been provided to a group of client devices;

assign a future popularity score to each of the identified media assets for each of the trending categories;

receive a particular query from a client device of the group of client devices, wherein the particular query comprises an indication of a preferred order for the trending categories; and

in response to receiving the particular query from the client device:

generate a plurality of media asset recommendations comprising at least an identified media asset having a highest future popularity score for each of the plurality of trending categories;

order the plurality of trending categories, associated with the plurality of media asset recommendations, according to the particular query and each of the assigned future popularity scores, wherein the ordering of the plurality of trending categories according to the particular query is based at least in part on the preferred order; and

output circuitry configured to cause to be displayed, by the output circuitry, based at least in part on the ordering and based at least in part on the preferred order, the plurality of trending categories and the respective media asset recommendations in the plurality of trending categories.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

access program trending data over a network connection; and

obtain a past popularity score for each respective media asset associated with each trending category of the plurality of trending categories;

wherein each respective future popularity score is equal to the past popularity score.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

the control circuitry is further configured to collect program trending data from one or more user populations, and the program trending data comprises a plurality of individual program trending data portions, and each portion is specific to a given user or plurality of users.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the program trending data is collected from a data source selected from a group consisting of multimedia devices, client devices, third party systems, and media subscriptions servers.

The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to generate the plurality of media asset recommendations is further configured to generate future trending predictions based on information about media assets that are of varying degrees of popularity in a past or present audience.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the future trending predictions indicate a number of viewers attracted by each respective media asset.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the group of client devices is a first group of client devices, and the past or present audience comprises a representative audience in a second group of client devices on which the media asset has already been viewed or is being viewed.

The system of claim 15 , wherein the future trending predictions are derived from a source selected from a group consisting of current viewing activities of a representative audience, scheduled recordings of a representative audience, real-time activity of a search engine, and real-time messages on a social network.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to receive filter settings from a user, and wherein the control circuitry configured to generate the plurality of media asset recommendations is further configured to do so based on the received filter settings.
