Abstract

Data deduplication across storage systems, including: identifying data duplicated within a plurality of storage systems that utilize shared object storage resources, responsive to identifying data duplicated within the plurality of storage systems, deduplicating the data from the shared object storage resources, including deleting one or more instances of the data from the shared object storage resources or preventing a duplicated copy of the data from being written to the shared object storage resources.

Claims (34)

1 . A method for data deduplication across storage systems, the method comprising:

identifying data duplicated within a plurality of storage systems that utilize shared object storage resources; and

responsive to identifying data duplicated within the plurality of storage systems, deduplicating the data in the shared object storage resources.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein deduplicating the data from the shared object storage resources further comprises deleting one or more instances of the data from the shared object storage resources.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein deduplicating the data from the shared object storage resources further comprises preventing a duplicated copy of the data from being written to the shared object storage resources.

4 . The method of claim 1 further comprising deleting, from at least one of the storage systems that utilize the shared object storage resources, the data.

5 . The method of claim 4 further comprising:

receiving, by a particular storage system that utilize the shared object storage resources, a request to read the data; and

servicing the read by retrieving the data from the shared object storage resources.

6 . The method of claim 4 further comprising maintaining a metadata reference to the data.

7 . The method of claim 6 wherein the metadata reference comprises a reference to one or more objects stored in the shared object storage resources.

8 . The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of storage systems comprise a plurality of virtual storage systems executed in one or more cloud-computing environments.

9 . The method of claim 1 wherein the shared object storage resources include one or more on-premises storage systems.

10 . The method of claim 1 wherein the shared object storage resources include cloud-based object storage resources.

11 . A system for data deduplication across storage systems, comprising:

a plurality of storage systems that utilize shared object storage resources that include cloud-based object storage resources, the system configured to perform the steps of:

identifying data duplicated within the plurality of storage systems; and

responsive to identifying data duplicated within the plurality of storage systems, deduplicating the data in the shared object storage resources.

12 . The system of claim 11 wherein deduplicating the data from the shared object storage resources further comprises deleting one or more instances of the data from the shared object storage resources.

13 . The system of claim 11 wherein deduplicating the data from the shared object storage resources further comprises preventing a duplicated copy of the data from being written to the shared object storage resources.

14 . The system of claim 11 further configured to perform the step of deleting, from at least one of the storage systems that utilize the shared object storage resources, the data.

15 . The system of claim 14 further configured to perform the steps of:

receiving, by a particular storage system that utilize the shared object storage resources, a request to read the data; and

servicing the read by retrieving the data from the shared object storage resources.

16 . A system for data deduplication across storage systems, comprising:

a plurality of storage systems that utilize shared object storage resources that include one or more on-premises storage systems, the system configured to perform the steps of:

identifying data duplicated within a plurality of storage systems that utilize shared object storage resources; and

responsive to identifying data duplicated within the plurality of storage systems, deduplicating the data in the shared object storage resources.

17 . The system of claim 16 wherein deduplicating the data from the shared object storage resources further comprises deleting one or more instances of the data from the shared object storage resources.

18 . The system of claim 16 wherein deduplicating the data from the shared object storage resources further comprises preventing a duplicated copy of the data from being written to the shared object storage resources.

19 . The system of claim 16 further configured to perform the step of deleting, from at least one of the storage systems that utilize the shared object storage resources, the data.

20 . The system of claim 19 further configured to perform the steps of:

receiving, by a particular storage system that utilize the shared object storage resources, a request to read the data; and

servicing the read by retrieving the data from the shared object storage resources.
