Abstract

Systems and methods where a delay time between a first card processing mechanism, such as a drop-on-demand printer that prints with UV curable ink, and a second card processing mechanism, such as a UV curing station, can be altered to adjust the travel time of the card from the first card processing mechanism to the second card processing mechanism. First and second card buffers can be provided between the first card processing mechanism and the second card processing mechanism. Each of the first and second card buffers is independently logically controlled to permit independent control of the transport time of a card through each card buffer. Alternatively, a single card buffer or more than two card buffers can be provided between the first card processing mechanism and the second card processing mechanism.

Claims (25)

1. A method of printing on a plastic card, comprising:

inputting the plastic card into a drop-on-demand printer that is configured to print with ultra-violet (UV) curable ink;

printing UV curable ink onto a surface of the plastic card using a printhead of the drop-on-demand printer;

after printing, mechanically transporting the plastic card into a card buffer and while the plastic card is in the card buffer delaying further transport of the plastic card for a predetermined time period;

after the predetermined time period has expired, mechanically transporting the plastic card from the card buffer into a UV curing station.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

after the predetermined time period has expired, mechanically transporting the plastic card from the card buffer into another card buffer and while the plastic card is in the another card buffer delaying further transport of the plastic card for another predetermined time period;

after the another predetermined time period has expired, mechanically transporting the plastic card from the another card buffer into the UV curing station.

3. A method of printing on plastic cards, comprising:

inputting a first plastic card into a drop-on-demand printer that is configured to print with ultra-violet (UV) curable ink;

printing UV curable ink onto a surface of the first plastic card using a printhead of the drop-on-demand printer;

after printing, mechanically transporting the first plastic card into a card buffer and while the first plastic card is in the card buffer delaying further transport of the first plastic card for a first predetermined time period;

after the first predetermined time period has expired, mechanically transporting the first plastic card from the card buffer into a UV curing station;

after printing onto the surface of the first plastic card and without mechanically adjusting a physical distance between the drop-on-demand printer and the UV curing station, inputting a second plastic card into the drop-on-demand printer;

printing UV curable ink onto a surface of the second plastic card using the printhead of the drop-on-demand printer;

after printing onto the surface of the second plastic card, mechanically transporting the second plastic card into the card buffer and while the second plastic card is in the card buffer delaying further transport of the second plastic card for a second predetermined time period that is shorter than or longer than the first predetermined time period; and

after the second predetermined time period has expired, mechanically transporting the second plastic card from the card buffer into the UV curing station.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first plastic card and the second plastic card are printed in a single card production run.

5. A method of printing on plastic cards, comprising:

sequentially inputting plastic cards into a drop-on-demand printer that prints with ultra-violet (UV) curable ink;

sequentially printing UV curable ink onto the plastic cards using a printhead of the drop-on-demand printer;

sequentially curing the UV curable ink in a UV curing station; and

adjusting a cure delay time without mechanically adjusting a distance between the drop-on-demand printer and the UV curing station.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein adjusting the cure delay time comprises inputting each card into at least one card buffer prior to inputting each card into the UV curing station.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein adjusting the cure delay time comprises inputting each card into first and second card buffers prior to inputting each card into the UV curing station.
