Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure describe a snowmobile including a chassis, a tunnel, an engine, a drive track and a drivetrain. The tunnel is attached to the chassis and includes running boards located on either side of the tunnel. The engine is attached to the chassis and within an engine bay. The drivetrain is operatively connected to the engine to deliver propulsive power to the drive track, wherein the running boards extend forward alongside at least a portion of the engine bay.

Claims (42)

1. A snowmobile, comprising:

a chassis;

a tunnel, attached to the chassis and including running boards located on either side of the tunnel;

an engine;

a drive track;

an exhaust system that extends from the engine, backward between a seat and a top panel of the tunnel, and downward through the tunnel to a region between the tunnel and a top of the drive track; and

a drivetrain, operatively interconnecting the engine with the drive track for delivering propulsive power to a track drive shaft coupled to the drive track, wherein the running boards extend forward of an axis associated with the track drive shaft.

2. The snowmobile of claim 1 , further including:

a continuously variable transmission (CVT) coupled to the engine; and

a transmission case having a top drive sprocket and a bottom drive sprocket, the top drive sprocket is coupled to receive propulsive power from the CVT and the bottom drive sprocket is coupled to the top drive sprocket to provide propulsive power received from the top drive sprocket to the track drive shaft.

3. The snowmobile of claim 2 , wherein the bottom drive sprocket is located adjacent to one of the running boards, wherein the running board extends forward of the bottom drive sprocket.

4. The snowmobile of claim 3 , wherein the running board located adjacent to the bottom drive sprocket includes a gap for receiving the bottom drive sprocket.

5. The snowmobile of claim 1 , wherein the engine is a single-cylinder engine wherein a center of mass of the engine is offset from a longitudinal centerline plane of the snowmobile.

6. The snowmobile of claim 1 , wherein the snowmobile includes a center-of-gravity (COG), wherein the running boards extend forward of the COG of the snowmobile.

7. The snowmobile of claim 1 , further including:

a bumper; and

a hood affixed to the bumper to form an integrated hood/bumper assembly.

8. The snowmobile of claim 7 , wherein the integrated hood/bumper assembly is pivotally mounted to the chassis to allow the integrated hood/bumper assembly to pivot between an open position and a closed position.

9. The snowmobile of claim 8 , wherein the bumper supports the hood when in the open position.

10. The snowmobile of claim 1 , wherein the running boards extend forward of an axis associated with the track drive shaft.

The snowmobile of claim 1 , wherein the exhaust system includes a first portion that extends from the engine an area between the seat and the top panel of the tunnel, a second portion that that extends along the top panel of the tunnel, and a third portion that extends downward through the tunnel toward the drive track.

12. The snowmobile of claim 11 , wherein the second portion includes a muffler and/or catalytic converter.

13. The snowmobile of claim 11 , wherein the first portion extends from the engine in a forward direction that curves upward around a top side of the drivetrain and then rearward toward the tunnel.

14. The snowmobile of claim 1 , further including a pair of skis connected to the chassis via lower A-arms.

15. The snowmobile of claim 14 , wherein the running boards extend in a forward direction to a position approximately equal in the forward direction to the lower A-arms.

16. The snowmobile of claim 15 , wherein the running boards extend forward of the lower A-arms.

17. The snowmobile of claim 1 , wherein the engine and the drivetrain are mounted within an engine bay defined by an engine bay width that is less than a width of the running boards, allowing the running boards to extend forward alongside at least a portion of the engine bay.

18. A snowmobile, comprising:

a chassis;

a tunnel, attached to the chassis and including running boards located on either side of the tunnel;

an engine;

a drive track;

a drivetrain, operatively interconnecting the engine with the drive track for delivering propulsive power to a track drive shaft coupled to the drive track, wherein the running boards extend forward of an axis associated with the track drive shaft;

a continuously variable transmission (CVT) coupled to the engine;

a transmission case having a top drive sprocket and a bottom drive sprocket, the top drive sprocket is coupled to receive propulsive power from the CVT and the bottom drive sprocket is coupled to the top drive sprocket to provide propulsive power received from the top drive sprocket to the track drive shaft, a jack shaft coupled to provide propulsive power from the CVT to the top drive sprocket; and

a brake assembly and a brake disc located adjacent to the top drive sprocket.

19. A snowmobile, comprising:

a chassis;

a tunnel, attached to the chassis and including running boards located on either side of the tunnel;

an engine;

a drive track; and

a drivetrain, operatively interconnecting the engine with the drive track for delivering propulsive power to a track drive shaft coupled to the drive track, wherein the snowmobile includes a center-of-gravity (COG), wherein the running boards extend forward of the COG of the snowmobile and forward of an axis associated with the track drive shaft.
