Abstract

Systems and methods are described for monitoring usage of a medicament dispenser—particularly an inhaled medicament dispenser. The usage monitoring device is configured to emit a detection signal responsive to receiving a request to locate the medicament dispenser. The detection signal alerts presence of the medicament dispenser to the user of the medicament dispenser. The usage monitoring device can be embodied as an attachment configured to be selectively coupled to one of a variety of different inhalers including, for example, a Diskus-type inhaler and a Respimat-type inhaler.

Claims (59)

1. A monitoring attachment attachable to a medicament dispenser for monitoring usage of the medicament dispenser, comprising:

a housing attachable to a medicament dispenser;

one or more sensors to detect usage of the medicament dispenser, the one or more sensors comprising:

a first sensor to detect a first signal generated in response to a first movement of the medicament dispenser, wherein power is directed to the first sensor by at least one processor, and wherein the first movement is associated with the medicament dispenser being handled after a period of nonuse; and

a second sensor to detect a second signal generated in response to a second movement of the medicament dispenser, wherein power is directed to the second sensor by the at least one processor upon the first sensor detecting the first signal, and wherein the second movement is associated with the medicament dispenser dispensing a medicament or preparing to dispense the medicament;

a storage medium to store event data associated with the usage of the medicament dispenser as a medication usage event;

a wireless transceiver configured to:

transmit, to a client device, the medication usage event detected by the sensors, and

receive, from the client device, a request to locate the medicament dispenser; and

an output device configured to emit a detection signal responsive to the request to locate the medicament dispenser.

2. The monitoring attachment of claim 1 , wherein the output device is a speaker, and wherein a detection signal output by the speaker is an audio signal.

3. The monitoring attachment of claim 1 , wherein the output device is a vibration component, and wherein a detection signal output by the vibration component is a vibration signal.

4. The monitoring attachment of claim 1 , wherein the output device is a light, and wherein a detection signal output by the light is a blinking signal.

5. The monitoring attachment of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is further configured to

establish a wireless connection with the client device for receiving and transmitting data, and

wherein the output device is further configured to emit a second detection signal responsive to the wireless transceiver determining that the wireless connection with the client device is lost.

6. The monitoring attachment of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver uses one or more of:

a Bluetooth protocol;

a Wi-Fi network;

a cellular network; and

a radio frequency (RF) protocol.

7. The monitoring attachment of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises an exterior surface attachable to a cover of the medicament dispenser.

8. The monitoring attachment of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise an infrared sensor configured to detect movement of a feature on a body of the medicament dispenser, wherein detecting usage is based on movement of the feature detected by the infrared sensor.

9. The monitoring attachment of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors include a microphone configured to capture audio corresponding to a sound of an inhalation of medicament dispensed by the medicament dispenser and usage of the medicament dispenser is detected based on audio captured by the microphone.

10. The monitoring attachment of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors include an accelerometer configured to detect movement of the medicament dispenser and usage of the medicament dispenser is detected based on movement of the medicament dispenser detected by the accelerometer.

11. The monitoring attachment of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors include a capacitive sensor configured to detect a handling of the medicament dispenser and usage of the medicament dispenser is detected based on the handling of the medicament dispenser detected by the capacitive sensor.

12. A method comprising:

receiving, from a client device via a wireless transceiver of a monitoring attachment attached to a medicament dispenser, a request to locate the medicament dispenser;

emitting, via an output device on the monitoring attachment, a detection signal;

detecting, via one or more sensors on the monitoring attachment, usage of the medicament dispenser as a medication usage event, wherein the detection comprises:

detecting, by a first sensor of the one or more sensors, a first signal generated in response to a first movement of the medicament dispenser relative to a housing attached to the medicament dispenser, wherein power is directed to the first sensor by at least one processor, and wherein the first movement is associated with the medicament dispenser being handled after a period of nonuse; and

detecting, via a second sensor of the one or more sensors, a second signal generated in response to a second movement of the medicament dispenser, wherein power is directed to the second sensor by the at least one processor upon the first sensor detecting the first signal, and wherein the second movement is associated with the medicament dispenser dispensing medicament or preparing to dispense a medicament; and

transmitting, via the wireless transceiver to the client device, the medication usage event.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the output device is a speaker, and wherein a detection signal output by the speaker is an audio signal.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the output device is a vibration component, and wherein a detection signal output by the vibration component is a vibration signal.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the output device is a light, and wherein a detection signal output by the light is a blinking signal.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

establishing, via the wireless transceiver, a wireless connection with the client device for receiving and transmitting data;

determining, via the wireless transceiver, that the wireless connection with the client device is lost; and

emitting, via the output device, a second detection signal responsive to determining that the wireless connection with the client device is lost.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more sensors include an infrared sensor, wherein detecting the usage comprises detecting, via the infrared sensor, movement of a feature on a body of the medicament dispenser.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more sensors include a microphone, and detecting the usage comprises capturing, via the microphone, audio corresponding to a sound of an inhalation of medicament dispensed by the medicament dispenser.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more sensors include an accelerometer, and detecting the usage comprises detecting, via the accelerometer, movement of the medicament dispenser.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more sensors include a capacitive sensor, and detecting the usage comprises detecting, via the capacitive sensor, a handling of the medicament dispenser.

21. A system comprising:

a monitoring attachment attachable to a medicament dispenser for monitoring usage of the medicament dispenser, comprising:

a housing attachable to the medicament dispenser;

one or more sensors to detect usage of the medicament dispenser, the one or more sensors comprising:

a first sensor to detect a first signal generated in response to a first movement of the medicament dispenser, wherein power is directed to the first sensor by at least one processor of the monitoring attachment, and wherein the first movement is associated with the medicament dispenser being handled after a period of nonuse; and

a second sensor to detect a second signal generated in response to a second movement of the medicament dispenser, wherein power is directed to the second sensor by the at least one processor of the monitoring attachment upon the first sensor detecting the first signal, and wherein the second movement is associated with the medicament dispenser dispensing medicament or preparing to dispense the medicament;

a storage medium to store event data associated with the usage of the medicament dispenser as a medication usage event;

a wireless transceiver configured to:

transmit, to a client device, the medication usage event detected by the sensors, and

receive, from the client device, a request to locate the medicament dispenser; and

an output device configured to emit a detection signal responsive to the request to locate the medicament dispenser; and

a computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor of the client device, cause the at least one processor of the client device to:
