Abstract

A nasal assembly for delivering breathable gas to a patient includes a frame having an integrally formed first connector portion. A nozzle assembly includes a gusset or base portion and a pair of nozzles. At least one inlet conduit is structured to deliver breathable gas into the frame and nozzle assembly for breathing by the patient. A pair of second connector portions are removably and rotatably connected to respective first connector portions of the frame and are in communication with respective inlet conduits, e.g., directly or via angle connectors. A headgear assembly is removably connected to the pair of second connector portions and/or the angle connectors so as to maintain the frame and the nozzle assembly in a desired adjusted position on the patient's face.

Claims (82)

1. A mask assembly to provide pressurized air to nasal passages of a patient, the mask assembly comprising:

a patient interface shaped to seal with a nose of the patient and deliver pressurized air from a breathing chamber defined by the patient interface to the nasal passages, the patient interface further defining a first air-delivery passage through a first lateral side of the patient interface and a second air-delivery passage through a second lateral side of the patient interface opposite from the first lateral side of the patient interface;

a first inlet conduit structured to connect with the patient interface at the first lateral side of the patient interface and deliver pressurized air to the breathing chamber through the first air-delivery passage of the patient interface;

a second inlet conduit structured to connect with the patient interface at the second lateral side of the patient interface and deliver pressurized air to the breathing chamber through the second air-delivery passage of the patient interface;

a conduit connector shaped to position at a top of a head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient and to connect both the first inlet conduit and the second inlet conduit with a supply of pressurized air and to direct the supply of pressurized air to the first inlet conduit and the second inlet conduit; and

a rear strap to extend between the first inlet conduit and the second inlet conduit and around a rear portion of the head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient, the rear strap being attachable to the first inlet conduit at a first side of the head of the patient and attachable to the second inlet conduit at a second side of the head of the patient that opposes the first side of the head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient, wherein the rear strap is adapted to retain the first inlet conduit in a first operative position extending from the patient interface upwardly along the first side of the head of the patient between a first ear of the patient and a first eye of the patient toward the conduit connector at the top of the head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient, and the rear strap is adapted to retain the second inlet conduit in a second operative position extending from the patient interface upwardly along the second side of the head of the patient between a second ear of the patient and a second eye of the patient toward the conduit connector at the top of the head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient.

2. The mask assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

the rear strap is removably attachable to the first inlet conduit at a first location, the first location being positioned along the first inlet conduit above the first ear of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient; and

the rear strap is removably attachable to the second inlet conduit at a second location, the second location being positioned along the second inlet conduit above the second ear of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient.

3. The mask assembly of claim 2 , wherein:

the first inlet conduit includes a first connector portion that is more rigid than a first elongate tubular portion of the first inlet conduit, and is formed of a different material than the first elongate tubular portion of the first inlet conduit; and

the second inlet conduit includes a second connector portion that is more rigid than a second elongate tubular portion of the second conduit, and is formed of a different material than the second elongate tubular portion of the second inlet conduit.

4. The mask assembly of claim 3 , wherein:

the first connector portion is molded or adhered to the first elongate tubular portion; and

the second connector portion is molded or adhered to the second elongate tubular portion.

5. The mask assembly of claim 4 , wherein:

the first connector portion is insertable into the first air-delivery passage and defines a first conduit passage through which pressurized air is able to flow from the first elongate tubular portion of the first inlet conduit into the breathing chamber of the patient interface when the mask assembly is worn by the patient; and

the second connector portion is insertable into the second air-delivery passage and defines a second conduit passage through which pressurized air is able to flow from the second elongate tubular portion of the second inlet conduit into the breathing chamber of the patient interface when the mask assembly is worn by the patient.

6. The mask assembly of claim 5 , wherein:

the first connector portion is removably attachable within the first air-delivery passage of the patient interface with a snap fit; and

the second connector portion is removably attachable within the second air-delivery passage of the patient interface with a snap fit.

7. The mask assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

the rear strap is removably attachable to the first inlet conduit at a first location, the first location being positioned along the first inlet conduit above the first ear of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient;

the rear strap is removably attachable to the second inlet conduit at a second location, the second location being positioned along the second inlet conduit above the second ear of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient;

the rear strap has a bowed shape that is configured to curve downward when the rear strap passes around the rear portion of the head of the patient such that a mid-portion of the rear strap is a lowest portion of the rear strap when the mask assembly is worn by the patient and viewed from behind the patient;

the first inlet conduit defines a concave curvature with ends oriented away from the rear strap along a longitudinal direction of the first inlet conduit extending between the patient interface and the conduit connector when the mask assembly is worn by the patient; and

the second inlet conduit defines a concave curvature with ends oriented away from the rear strap along a longitudinal direction of the second inlet conduit extending between the patient interface and the conduit connector when the mask assembly is worn by the patient.

8. The mask assembly of claim 7 , wherein:

the first inlet conduit is arcuate such that the concave curvature of the first inlet conduit is continuous between a connection of the first inlet conduit to the patient interface and a connection of the first inlet conduit to the conduit connector; and

the second inlet conduit is arcuate such that the concave curvature of the second inlet conduit is continuous between a connection of the second inlet conduit to the patient interface and a connection of the second inlet conduit to the conduit connector.

9. The mask assembly of claim 8 , wherein:

the first inlet conduit defines a first height configured to extend transversely from the first side of the head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient;

the first inlet conduit defines a first width transverse to both the first height and a direction of airflow through the first inlet conduit;

the first width is greater than the first height;

the second inlet conduit defines a second height configured to extend transversely from the second side of the head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient;

the second inlet conduit defines a second width transverse to both the second height and a direction of airflow through the second inlet conduit; and

the second width is greater than the second height.

10. The mask assembly of claim 8 , wherein the rear strap is shaped such that the lowest portion of the rear strap is adapted to be positioned between a Frankfurt horizontal line of the patient and a subnasal line of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient.

11. The mask assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

the conduit connector is configured to connect with a single flow generator conduit adapted to connect with the supply of pressurized air;

the conduit connector is adapted to simultaneously provide pressurized air from the single flow generator conduit to both the first inlet conduit and the second inlet conduit; and

the conduit connector includes a swivel joint to provide pivotable movement between the conduit connector and the single flow generator conduit.

12. The mask assembly of claim 11 , wherein the first inlet conduit defines a single air-flow channel and the second inlet conduit defines a single air flow channel.

13. The mask assembly of claim 12 , wherein:

the first inlet conduit comprises a first elongate tubular portion formed from silicone;

the second inlet conduit comprises a second elongate tubular portion formed from silicone; and

the mask assembly is structured to sit entirely above a mouth of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient and is viewed from in front of the patient.

14. The mask assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

the rear strap is configured to curve downward when the rear strap passes around a rear portion of the head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient and viewed from behind the patient; and

the rear strap is shaped so that a lowest portion of the rear strap is positioned between a Frankfurt horizontal line of the patient and a subnasal line of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient.

15. The mask assembly of claim 1 , wherein the mask assembly is structured to seal with breathing passages of the patient entirely above a mouth of the patient and below a bridge of the nose of the patient.

16. The mask assembly of claim 15 , wherein the patient interface is shaped to concurrently contact an underside of the nose of the patient and an upper lip region of the patient when the patient interface is worn by the patient to form the seal with the nose of the patient.

17. The mask assembly of claim 16 , wherein the patient interface includes a vent that is centered between the first lateral side of the patient interface and the second lateral side of the patient interface.

The mask assembly of claim 16 , wherein the patient interface includes a single gusset structured to expand and contract to alter a distance between (i) a distal portion of the patient interface, and (ii) a portion of the patient interface that forms the seal with the nose by sealing with both of the nasal passages of the patient.

19. The mask assembly of claim 18 , wherein the patient interface is structured to inflate upon introduction of pressurized air into the breathing chamber.

20. The mask assembly of claim 18 , wherein the patient interface is shaped to avoid contact with internal surfaces of the nasal passages of the patient when the patient interface is worn by the patient to form the seal with the nose of the patient.

21. The mask assembly of claim 20 , wherein the patient interface has a width extending from the first lateral side to the second lateral side and the width is (i) greater than a height transverse to the width at a center of the patient interface, and (ii) greater than a depth transverse to both the width and the height at the center of the patient interface, wherein a silicone cushion comprises a portion of the patient interface that forms the seal with the nasal passages of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient.

The mask assembly of claim 1 , wherein the patient interface is shaped to contact an underside of the nose of the patient concurrently with a tubular portion of the nasal assembly contacting an upper lip region of the patient, when the patient interface is worn by the patient to form the seal with the nose of the patient.

23. The mask assembly of claim 1 , wherein the patient interface is shaped to seal within the nasal passages, against the nasal passages, or around the nasal passages.

24. The mask assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

the patient interface includes means for venting exhaled gases; and

the conduit connector includes means for connecting to a flow generator conduit.

25. The mask assembly of claim 24 , wherein:

the first inlet conduit comprises means for attaching the first inlet conduit to the patient interface;

the second inlet conduit comprises means for attaching the second inlet conduit to the patient interface; and

the patient interface includes means for sealing with the nose of the patient.

26. A mask assembly to provide pressurized air to nasal passages of a patient, the mask assembly comprising:

a patient interface shaped to seal with a nose of the patient and deliver pressurized air from a breathing chamber defined by the patient interface to the nasal passages, the patient interface further defining a first air-delivery passage through a first lateral side of the patient interface and a second air-delivery passage through a second lateral side of the patient interface opposite from the first lateral side of the patient interface, the patient interface including a single gusset structured to expand and contract to alter a distance between (i) a distal portion of the patient interface, and (ii) a portion of the patient interface that forms the seal with the nose by sealing with both of the nasal passages of the patient, the patient interface being shaped to concurrently contact an underside of the nose of the patient and an upper lip region of the patient when the patient interface is worn by the patient to form the seal with the nose of the patient;

a first inlet conduit structured to connect with the patient interface at the first lateral side of the patient interface and deliver pressurized air to the breathing chamber through the first air-delivery passage of the patient interface;

a second inlet conduit structured to connect with the patient interface at the second lateral side of the patient interface and deliver pressurized air to the breathing chamber through the second air-delivery passage of the patient interface;

a conduit connector shaped to position at a top of a head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient and to connect both the first inlet conduit and the second inlet conduit with a supply of pressurized air and to direct the supply of pressurized air to the first inlet conduit and the second inlet conduit; and

a rear strap to extend between the first inlet conduit and the second inlet conduit and around a rear portion of the head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient, the rear strap being removably attachable to the first inlet conduit above a first ear of the patient at a first side of the head of the patient and being removably attachable to the second inlet conduit above a second ear of the patient at a second side of the head of the patient that opposes the first side of the head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient, the rear strap having a bowed shape that is configured to curve downward when the rear strap passes around the rear portion of the head of the patient such that a mid-portion of the rear strap is a lowest portion of the rear strap when the mask assembly is worn by the patient and viewed from behind the patient, wherein the rear strap is adapted to retain the first inlet conduit in a first operative position extending from the patient interface upwardly along the first side of the head of the patient between the first ear of the patient and a first eye of the patient toward the conduit connector at the top of the head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient, the first inlet conduit being arcuate such that the first inlet conduit continuously curves between a connection of the first inlet conduit to the patient interface and a connection of the first inlet conduit to the conduit connector, and the rear strap is adapted to retain the second inlet conduit in a second operative position extending from the patient interface upwardly along the second side of the head of the patient between the second ear of the patient and a second eye of the patient toward the conduit connector at the top of the head of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient, the second inlet conduit being arcuate such that the second inlet conduit continuously curves between a connection of the second inlet conduit to the patient interface and a connection of the second inlet conduit to the conduit connector.

27. The mask assembly of claim 26 , wherein:

the first inlet conduit includes a first connector portion that is more rigid than a first elongate tubular portion of the first inlet conduit, and is formed of a different material than the first elongate tubular portion of the first inlet conduit;

the second inlet conduit includes a second connector portion that is more rigid than a second elongate tubular portion of the second conduit, and is formed of a different material than the second elongate tubular portion of the second inlet conduit;

the first connector portion is insertable into the first air-delivery passage and defines a first conduit passage through which pressurized air is able to flow from the first elongate tubular portion of the first inlet conduit into the breathing chamber of the patient interface when the mask assembly is worn by the patient; and

the second connector portion is insertable into the second air-delivery passage and defines a second conduit passage through which pressurized air is able to flow from the second elongate tubular portion of the second inlet conduit into the breathing chamber of the patient interface when the mask assembly is worn by the patient.

28. The mask assembly of claim 27 , wherein:

the first connector portion is molded or adhered to the first elongate tubular portion; and

the second connector portion is molded or adhered to the second elongate tubular portion.

29. The mask assembly of claim 26 , wherein the rear strap is shaped such that the lowest portion of the rear strap is adapted to be positioned between a Frankfurt horizontal line of the patient and a subnasal line of the patient when the mask assembly is worn by the patient.

30. The mask assembly of claim 26 , wherein the mask assembly is structured to seal with breathing passages of the patient entirely above a mouth of the patient and below a bridge of the nose of the patient.
