Abstract

The present disclosure is a novel utility of a software defined radio (SDR) based Distributed Antenna System (DAS) that is field reconfigurable and support multi-modulation schemes (modulation-independent), multi-carriers, multi-frequency bands and multi-channels. The present disclosure enables a high degree of flexibility to manage, control, enhance, facilitate the usage and performance of a distributed wireless network such as flexible simulcast, automatic traffic load-balancing, network and radio resource optimization, network calibration, autonomous/assisted commissioning, carrier pooling, automatic frequency selection, frequency carrier placement, traffic monitoring, traffic tagging, pilot beacon, etc.

Claims (41)

1. A system comprising:

a shared communication path configured to be shared between Internet protocol (IP) traffic data and cellular traffic data;

a digital access unit (DAU), the DAU including a router configured to route the IP traffic data and the cellular traffic data to at least one remote radio unit (RRU) over the communication path;

the at least one remote radio unit (RRU) in communication with the DAU and configured to:

receive radio frequency (RF) signals associated with the cellular traffic data; and

receive the IP traffic data,

wherein the DAU is configured to transmit the IP traffic data and the cellular traffic data to each of the at least one RRUs via the shared communication path shared between the IP traffic data and the cellular traffic data.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data is local traffic.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data is VoIP, Wi-Fi or WiMAX.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data is a control protocol.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data controls radio resources.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data controls time slots.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data controls capacity and/or throughput.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data enables or disables radio resources at the at least one RRU.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data manages which carries are active at the at least one RRU.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data manages which time slots are used by the at least one RRU.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data controls radio resources for a plurality of RRUs.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data contains information that is used by the at least one RRU to turn on and off individual carriers and their corresponding time slots.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data and the cellular traffic data are parallel data streams that are serialized and translated into optical signals.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the DAU can remotely turn on and off individual carriers at the at least one RRU.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data includes control information for the at least one RRU.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one RRU is controlled by the DAU over the shared communication path.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the IP traffic data includes one or more of synchronization information and system timing information.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the DAU is configured to create one or more data packets including the cellular traffic data and the IP traffic data.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the DAU is configured to receive the cellular traffic data from a base transceiver station (BTS).

20. The system of claim 1 , wherein the DAU is configured to receive the cellular traffic data from a base transceiver station (BTS) via an optical connection.

21. A method comprising:

sharing a communication path between Internet protocol (IP) traffic data and cellular traffic data;

routing, via a digital access unit (DAU), the IP traffic data and the cellular traffic data to at least one remote radio unit (RRU) over the communication path, wherein the at least one remote radio unit (RRU) in communication with the DAU and performs a method comprising:

receiving radio frequency (RF) signals associated with the cellular traffic data; and

receiving the IP traffic data, and

wherein the DAU is configured to transmit the IP traffic data and the cellular traffic data to each of the at least one RRUs via the shared communication path shared between the IP traffic data and the cellular traffic data.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the IP traffic data is local traffic.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the IP traffic data is VoIP, Wi-Fi or WiMAX.

24. The method of claim 21 , wherein the IP traffic data is a control protocol.

25. The method of claim 21 , wherein the IP traffic data controls radio resources.

26. The method of claim 21 , wherein the IP traffic data controls time slots.

27. The method of claim 21 , wherein the IP traffic data controls capacity and/or throughput.

28. The method of claim 21 , wherein the IP traffic data includes one or more of synchronization information and system timing information.

29. The method of claim 21 , wherein the IP traffic data manages which carries are active at the at least one RRU.

30. The method of claim 21 , wherein the IP traffic data manages which time slots are used by the at least one RRU.
