Systems and methods of managing video and ad segments in a live stream
Systems and methods of managing online streaming content are contemplated in this application. A new data structure is discussed. The new data structure is useful for the organization and delivery of streaming content—especially live content. Systems and methods make it possible for a broadcast manager to determine when advertisements can be played during a live broadcast (e.g., during a time out in a basketball game). Episode containers (the new data structure) include different segments, including both video-segments and advertisement-segments, where segments can be used to broadcast video from different sources. This can be particularly useful for broadcasting of content online where advertisement videos can be hosted elsewhere from where the broadcast content is hosted, allowing users to seamlessly watch a program with advertisements without experiencing interruption when they are transitioned to an advertisement from the broadcast.
1. A computer implemented method for re-transmitting a program with advertisements different than in a live transmission of the program, the computer implemented method comprising:
receiving an advertisement interruption request during the live transmission of the program, the advertisement interruption request indicating a set length of an advertisement segment;
modifying, based at least in part on the received interruption request, an episode container with content portions comprising a plurality of video segments and the advertisement segment, wherein the advertisement segment is modified such that the advertising segment is no longer than the set length and includes a first advertisement associated with a first demographic characteristic of a first audience, wherein the first audience is an audience that viewed the live transmission of the program; and
at a time subsequent to the live transmission of the program:
transmitting a first video segment of the plurality of video segments of the episode container;
determining an anticipated second audience based at least on a current time of the transmitting, wherein the anticipated second audience is different from the first audience that viewed, at the time of the live transmission, the live transmission of the program;
determining a second demographic characteristic based at least on the anticipated second audience;
selecting a second advertisement and a third advertisement based at least in part on the determined second demographic characteristic of the anticipated second audience and based at least in part on the set length of the advertisement segment indicated by the advertisement interruption request;
associating, to the advertisement segment of the episode container, the second advertisement and the third advertisement selected for the anticipated second audience; and
transmitting the second advertisement and the third advertisement in place of the first advertisement in the advertisement segment.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content portions comprise metadata associated with the advertising segment.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the content portions comprise metadata indicating one or more of a content portion length, format, quality, and title.
4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving, based at least in part on a user interface selection, a request to transmit the first video segment of the plurality of video segments of the episode container.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transmitting of the first video segment of the plurality of video segments of the episode container at the time subsequent to the live transmission of the program comprises a broadcast transmission of the first video segment.
6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
identifying a fourth advertisement and a fifth advertisement segment to transmit in a second advertisement segment;
associating the fourth advertisement and the fifth advertisement to a second advertisement segment in the episode container, wherein the second advertisement segment follows a further video segment of the plurality of video segments following the advertising segment; and
transmitting the fourth advertisement and the fifth advertisement in the second advertisement segment.
7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
selecting a fourth advertisement based at least in part on the determined second demographic characteristic of the anticipated second audience and based at least in part on the set length of the advertisement segment indicated by the advertisement interruption request;
associating, to the advertisement segment of the episode container, the fourth advertisement
transmitting a second video segment following the advertisement segment.
8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the episode container comprises a further video segment of the plurality of video segments immediately following the advertisement segment.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the advertisement interruption request during the live transmission of the program is received from a broadcast manager of the formerly live broadcast.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the advertisement interruption request during the live transmission of the program is generated in real time during transmission of a video segment of the plurality of video segments immediately preceding the advertisement segment.
