Abstract

An autonomous vehicle is disclosed. The vehicle comprises a chassis, two or more drive wheels extending below the chassis, a drive motor housed within the chassis for driving the drive wheels, and a payload surface on top of the chassis for carrying a payload. An illumination system, for emitting light from at least one portion of the chassis, is mounted substantially around the entire perimeter of the chassis. The illumination system may be implemented using an array of light-emitting diodes (“LEDs”) that are arranged as segments. For example, there may be “headlight” segments on the front left and front right corners of the chassis.

Claims (38)

1. A system for controlling an illumination system for an autonomous vehicle, the system comprising:

a memory storing a plurality of lighting pattern definitions;

a processor in communication with the memory and the illumination system, the processor is operable to:

receive salient data defining a current salient feature, the feature being salient to the autonomous vehicle, wherein the salient data comprises at least one of environmental data defining an object in the vicinity of the autonomous vehicle or trajectory data defining a target location of the autonomous vehicle;

select a lighting pattern of the plurality of lighting patterns based on the salient data; and

control the illumination system based on the autonomous vehicle in relation to the current salient feature.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is operable to receive a signal from a sensor based on the current salient feature.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the processor is operable to determine the salient data based on the signal.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is operable to control the illumination system to illuminate a segment of the illumination system according to the selected lighting pattern.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the processor is operable to select the segment according to the autonomous vehicle in relation to the current salient feature.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the salient data comprises the environmental data, and the object is in motion.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the salient data comprises the environmental data, and the processor is operable to control the illumination system to illuminate a segment of the illumination system that indicates a direction of the object in relation to the autonomous vehicle.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the salient data comprises the trajectory data, and the processor is operable to control the illumination system to illuminate a segment of the illumination system that indicates a direction of the target location in relation to the autonomous vehicle.

9. A method of controlling an illumination system for an autonomous vehicle, the method comprising:

storing, in a memory, a plurality of lighting pattern definitions for controlling the illumination system;

receiving, at a processor in communication with the memory and the illumination system, salient data defining a current salient feature, the feature being salient to the autonomous vehicle, wherein the salient data comprises at least one of environmental data defining an object in the vicinity of the autonomous vehicle or trajectory data defining a target location of the autonomous vehicle;

at the processor, selecting a lighting pattern of the plurality of lighting patterns based on the salient data; and

controlling the illumination system based on the autonomous vehicle in relation to the current salient feature.

10. The method of claim 9 comprises receiving, at the processor, a signal from a sensor based on the current salient feature.

11. The method of claim 10 comprises, at the processor, determining the salient data based on the signal.

12. The method of claim 9 comprises controlling the illumination system to illuminate a segment of the illumination system according to the selected lighting pattern.

13. The method of claim 12 comprises, at the processor, selecting the segment according to the current salient feature in relation to the autonomous vehicle.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the salient data comprises environmental data defining an object in the vicinity of the autonomous vehicle, and the object is in motion.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the salient data comprises the environmental data, and the method comprises controlling the illumination system to illuminate a segment of the illumination system that indicates a direction of the object in relation to the autonomous vehicle.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the salient data comprises the trajectory data, and the method comprises controlling the illumination system to illuminate a segment of the illumination system that indicates a direction of the target location in relation to the autonomous vehicle.

17. An autonomous vehicle, comprising:

a chassis;

two or more drive wheels extending below the chassis;

a drive motor housed within the chassis for driving the drive wheels;

an illumination system for emitting light from at least a portion of the chassis;

a memory storing a plurality of lighting pattern definitions; and

a processor operable to:

receive salient data defining a current salient feature, the feature being salient to the autonomous vehicle, wherein the salient data comprises at least one of environmental data defining an object in the vicinity of the autonomous vehicle or trajectory data defining a target location of the autonomous vehicle;

select a lighting pattern of the plurality of lighting patterns based on the salient data; and

control the illumination system based on the autonomous vehicle in relation to the current salient feature.

18. The autonomous vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the processor is operable to receive a signal from a sensor based on the current salient feature.

19. The autonomous vehicle of claim 18 , wherein the processor is operable to determine the salient data based on the signal.

20. The autonomous vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the processor is operable to control the illumination system to illuminate a segment of the illumination system according to the selected lighting pattern.
