Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure describe techniques for reducing human exposure to wireless energy in wireless power delivery environments. In some embodiments, a wireless power reception apparatus configured to receive wireless power from a wireless charging system in a wireless power delivery environment is disclosed. The wireless power reception apparatus includes a control system and an antenna array. In some embodiments, the control system is configured to dynamically adjust transmission and reception radiation patterns of the antenna array to reduce human exposure to wireless radio frequency (RF) energy.

Claims (34)

1. An apparatus comprising:

at least one antenna; and

a control system operably coupled to the at least one antenna and configured to:

receive, via the at least one antenna, a signal encoding data representative of a strength of at least one beacon signal received at a wireless power transmitter (WPT); and

direct, based on the data representative of the strength of the at least one beacon signal, the at least one antenna to adjust a reception radiation pattern to facilitate avoidance of an obstruction by a wireless power signal transmitted from the WPT to the apparatus in response to the at least one beacon signal.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control system is further configured to adjust at least one of: a phase, and an amplitude, of the reception radiation pattern to further facilitate avoidance of the obstruction by the wireless power signal.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control system is further configured to:

determine a presence of the obstruction at least partially blocking the reception radiation pattern of the at least one antenna; and

direct the at least one antenna to adjust the radiation pattern according to the presence of the obstruction being determined.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control system is further configured to detect an orientation of the reception radiation pattern relative to the obstruction.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the control system is further configured to direct the at least one antenna to adjust the reception radiation pattern according to the orientation.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein to direct the at least one antenna to adjust the reception radiation pattern, the control system is further configured to at least one of:

direct the at least one antenna to adjust an angle of incidence of the wireless power signal received by the apparatus from the WPT;

direct the at least one antenna to cycle through a set of fixed reception radiation patterns and identify a reception radiation pattern from the set to minimize wireless energy exposure outside of a radio frequency energy pocket of the apparatus receiving the wireless power signal; and

direct the at least one antenna to adjust the radiation pattern in a direction away from a user of an electronic device of or associated with the apparatus.

7. One or more non-transitory computer readable storage media having program instructions stored thereon which, when executed by one or more processors of a machine, cause the machine to:

receive, via at least one antenna, a signal encoding data representative of a strength of at least one beacon signal received at a wireless power transmitter (WPT); and

direct, based on the data representative of the strength of the at least one beacon signal, the at least one antenna to adjust a reception radiation pattern to facilitate avoidance of an obstruction by a wireless power signal transmitted from the WPT to the machine in response to the at least one beacon signal.

8. An apparatus comprising:

a control system configured to:

receive, via at least one antenna, a signal encoding data representative of a strength of at least one beacon signal received at a wireless power transmitter (WPT); and

direct, based on the data representative of the strength of the at least one beacon signal, the at least one antenna to adjust a reception radiation pattern to facilitate avoidance of an obstruction by a wireless power signal transmitted from the WPT to the apparatus in response to the at least one beacon signal.

The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the at least one antenna comprises a plurality of antennas having corresponding reception radiation patterns, and wherein the control system is further configured to direct the plurality of antennas to adjust a phase of one or more of the corresponding reception radiation patterns to further facilitate avoidance of the obstruction by the wireless power signal.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the control system is further configured to direct the plurality of antennas to adjust an amplitude of one or more of the corresponding reception radiation patterns to further facilitate avoidance of the obstruction by the wireless power signal.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the control system is further configured to determine a presence of the obstruction at least partially blocking the reception radiation pattern of the at least one antenna.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the control system is further configured to direct the at least one antenna to adjust the reception radiation pattern according to the presence of the obstruction being determined.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the control system is further configured to detect an orientation of the reception radiation pattern relative to the obstruction.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the control system is further configured to direct the at least one antenna to adjust the reception radiation pattern according to the orientation.

15. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein to direct the at least one antenna to adjust the reception radiation pattern, the control system is further configured to direct the at least one antenna to adjust an angle of incidence of the wireless power signal received by the apparatus from the WPT.

16. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein to direct the at least one antenna to adjust the reception radiation pattern, the control system is further configured to cycle through a set of fixed reception radiation patterns.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the control system is further configured to identify a reception radiation pattern from the set to minimize wireless energy exposure outside of a radio frequency energy pocket of the apparatus receiving the wireless power signal.

18. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein to direct the at least one antenna to adjust the reception radiation pattern, the control system is further configured to direct the at least one antenna to adjust the reception radiation pattern in a direction away from the obstruction.

19. The apparatus of claim 8 further comprising the at least one antenna operably coupled to the control system.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 further comprising circuitry operably coupled to the at least one antenna and configured to convert the wireless power signal to a direct current.
