Abstract

An example eye-tracking optical assembly includes a light source for illuminating an eye, a first diffraction type polarizing beam splitter (DT-PBS), and a second DT-PBS, wherein the first DT-PBS is configured to direct, based on polarization, a first portion of light from the second DT-PBS towards an eye-tracking detector.

Claims (31)

1. An eye-tracking optical assembly comprising:

a light source for illuminating an eye;

a first diffraction type polarizing beam splitter (DT-PBS); and

a second DT-PBS, wherein the first DT-PBS is configured to direct, based on polarization, a first portion of light from the second DT-PBS towards an eye-tracking detector,

wherein one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS is configured to compensate for a spectral dispersion of one other of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS.

2. The eye-tracking optical assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second DT-PBS is configured to direct, based on polarization, the first portion state of light towards the first DT-PBS.

The eye-tracking optical assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS comprise a reflective or transmissive polarization volume grating, PBP grating, a liquid crystal filled surface relief grating, or a holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal grating.

4. The eye-tracking optical assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS reflect and direct, based on polarization, the first portion of light.

5. The eye-tracking optical assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS transmit and direct, based on polarization, the first portion of light.

6. The eye-tracking optical assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS is configured with optical power to converge or diverge light.

7. The eye-tracking optical assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second DT-PBS is configured to direct, based on polarization, the first portion of light towards an eye.

8. A head-mounted display (HMD) comprising:

a light source for illuminating an eye; and

a first diffraction type polarizing beam splitter (DT-PBS) configured to direct, based on polarization, a first portion of light from a second DT-PBS towards an eye-tracking detector,

wherein one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS is configured to compensate for a spectral dispersion of one other of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS.

9. The HMD of claim 8 , wherein the second DT-PBS is configured to direct, based on polarization, the first portion of light towards the first DT-PBS.

10. The HMD of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS comprise one of a reflective or transmissive polarization volume grating, PBP grating, a liquid crystal filled surface relief grating, or a holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal grating.

11. The HMD of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS reflect and direct, based on polarization, the first portion of light.

12. The HIVID of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS transmit and direct, based on polarization, the first portion of light.

13. The HIVID of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS is configured with optical power to converge or diverge light.

14. The HMD of claim 8 , wherein the second DT-PBS is configured to direct, based on polarization, the first portion of light towards an eye.

15. A method of tracking one and/or both eyes of an HIVID user comprising:

directing light from a light source towards a user's eye;

reflecting the light from the user's eye towards a first diffraction type polarizing beam splitter (DT-PBS);

directing, based on polarization, a first portion of the light from the first DT-PBS towards a second DT-PBS; and

directing, based on polarization, the first portion of the light from the second DT-PBS towards a detector, wherein one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS is configured to compensate for a spectral dispersion of one other of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the light from the light source is broadband.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS is configured to reflect and direct, based on polarization, the first portion of the light.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the first DT-PBS and the second DT-PBS is configured to transmit and direct, based on polarization, the first portion of the light.

The eye-tracking optical assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second DT-PBS is configured to transmit and direct, based on polarization, the first portion of light towards the first DT-PBS, and the first DT-PBS is configured to reflect and direct, based on polarization, the first portion of light towards the eye-tracking detector.

The eye-tracking optical assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second DT-PBS is configured to reflect and direct, based on polarization, the first portion of light towards the first DT-PBS, and the first DT-PBS is configured to transmit and direct, based on polarization, the first portion of light towards the eye-tracking detector.
