Abstract

In some embodiments, a server node may transmit metrics to a client piggy-backed on (appended to) responses to regular read/write requests. Other embodiments may be disclosed and/or claimed.

Claims (34)

1. A server node comprising:

a processor; and

memory coupled to the processor and storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, are configurable to cause the server node to perform operations comprising:

receiving client-stored metric information from a client of a plurality of clients, the client-stored metric information being piggybacked onto a read or write (R/W) request from the client;

reconciling the client-stored metric information with metric information that is stored by the server node;

generating updated metric information; and

transmitting the updated metric information to the client piggybacked onto a R/W reply from the server node.

2. The server node of claim 1 , wherein the client-stored metric information is previously updated based on metric information from a second server node.

The server node of claim 1 , wherein the client-stored metric information and the metric information stored by the server node each comprise a plurality of server metrics, wherein at least two of the plurality of server metrics in the client-stored metric information relate to different server nodes, and wherein at least two of the plurality of server metrics in the metric information stored by the server node relate to different server nodes.

The server node of claim 3 , wherein reconciling the client-stored metric information with the metric information stored by the server node includes comparing each of the plurality of server metrics in the client-stored metric information with each of the plurality of server metrics in the metric information stored by the server node.

5. The server node of claim 3 , wherein each of the plurality of server metrics in the client-stored metric information and each of the plurality of server metrics in the metric information stored by the server node has a timestamp and node identity field.

The server node of claim 5 , wherein reconciling the client-stored metric information with the metric information stored by the server node includes comparing at least one server metric in the client-stored metric information with at least one server metric in the metric information stored by the server node that have identical node identity fields.

The server node of claim 6 , wherein reconciling the client-stored metric information with the metric information stored by the server node further comprises selecting for transmission, from the server metrics in the client-stored metric information and metric information stored by the server node that have identical node identity fields, a server metric that has a most recent timestamp.

8. The server node of claim 1 , wherein the updated metric information includes the metric information stored by the server node following reconciliation with the client-stored metric information.

9. The server node of claim 1 , wherein the updated metric information comprises a list of changes between the client-stored metric information and the metric information stored by the server node.

10. A tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a server node, are configured to cause the server node to perform operations comprising:

receiving client-stored metric information from a client of a plurality of clients, the client-stored metric information being piggybacked onto a read or write (R/W) request from the client;

reconciling the client-stored metric information with metric information that is stored by the server node;

generating updated metric information; and

transmitting the updated metric information to the client piggybacked onto a R/W reply from the server node.

11. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the client-stored metric information is previously updated based on metric information from a second server node.

The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the client-stored metric information and the metric information stored by the server node each comprise a plurality of server metrics, wherein at least two of the plurality of server metrics in the client-stored metric information relate to different server nodes, and wherein at least two of the plurality of server metrics in the metric information stored by the server node relate to different server nodes.

The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein reconciling the client-stored metric information with the metric information stored by the server node includes comparing each of the plurality of server metrics in the client-stored metric information with each of the plurality of server metrics in the metric information stored by the server node.

14. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein each of the plurality of server metrics in the client-stored metric information and each of the plurality of server metrics in the metric information stored by the server node has a timestamp and node identity field.

The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein reconciling the client-stored metric information with the metric information stored by the server node includes comparing at least one server metric in the client-stored metric information with at least one server metric in the metric information stored by the server node that have identical node identity fields.

The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein reconciling the client-stored metric information with the metric information stored by the server node further comprises selecting for transmission, from the server metrics in the client-stored metric information and metric information stored by the server node that have identical node identity fields, a server metric that has a most recent timestamp.

17. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the updated metric information includes the metric information stored by the server node following reconciliation with the client-stored metric information.

18. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the updated metric information comprises a list of changes between the client-stored metric information and the metric information stored by the server node.

19. A method comprising:

receiving, by a server node, client-stored metric information from a client of a plurality of clients, the client-stored metric information being piggybacked onto a read or write (R/W) request from the client;

reconciling, by the server node, the client-stored metric information with metric information that is stored by the server node;

generating, by the server node, updated metric information; and

transmitting, by the server node, the updated metric information to the client piggybacked onto a R/W reply from the server node.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the client-stored metric information and the metric information stored by the server node each comprise a plurality of server metrics, wherein at least two of the plurality of server metrics in the client-stored metric information relate to different server nodes, and wherein at least two of the plurality of server metrics in the metric information stored by the server node relate to different server nodes.
