Abstract

Methods and systems for enabling a user to perform a full body movement while viewing a virtual reality environment on a head up displays without interfering with viewing of content on the heads up display. Specifically, a full body movement of the user is detected. In response to detecting the full body movement, the additional content is generated for display in a portion of the virtual reality environment corresponding to a foreground area of the user's visual field. The additional content assists the user perform the full body movement.

Claims (29)

1. A method for presenting additional content in a virtual reality environment on a heads up display showing main content without interfering with a user's viewing of the main content, the method comprising:

generating for display, in a first portion of a virtual reality environment in the heads up display, main content, wherein the first portion corresponds to a foreground area of a visual field of a user;

detecting an occurrence in the user's physical surroundings, wherein the occurrence is a change in the physical surrounding that is external to the user; and

in response to detecting an occurrence in the user's physical surroundings, generating for display, in a second portion of the virtual reality environment in the heads up display, additional content to assist the user in reacting to the occurrence and an option to provide user input to react to the occurrence, wherein the second portion corresponds to a peripheral area of the first visual field of the user.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the occurrence in the user's physical surroundings is detected using a movement detection module configured to detect occurrences in the user's physical surroundings by capturing multiple frames of the user's physical surroundings and comparing the multiple frames to detect changes.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the occurrence in the user's physical surroundings is detected using one or more sensors, wherein the sensors are integrated into the heads up display.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the occurrence in the user's physical surroundings is detected using one or more sensors, wherein the sensors are external to the heads up display and configured to transmit sensed information to the heads up display.

5. The method of to claim 1 , wherein the additional content includes at least one of a video of the occurrence and text indicating the occurrence.

6. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having non-transitory computer-readable instructions encoded thereon for presenting additional content in a virtual reality environment on a heads up display showing main content without interfering with a user's viewing of the main content that, when executed by control circuitry, cause the control circuitry to:

generate for display, in a first portion of a virtual reality environment in the heads up display, main content, wherein the first portion corresponds to a foreground area of a visual field of a user;

detect an occurrence in the user's physical surroundings, wherein the occurrence is a change in the physical surrounding that is external to the user; and

in response to detecting an occurrence in the user's physical surroundings, generate for display, in a second portion of the virtual reality environment in the heads up display, additional content to assist the user in reacting to the occurrence and an option to provide user input to react to the occurrence, wherein the second portion corresponds to a peripheral area of the first visual field of the user.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein execution of the instruction to detect the occurrence in the user's physical surroundings further causes the occurrence to be detected using a movement detection module configured to detect occurrences in the user's physical surroundings by capturing multiple frames of the user's physical surroundings and comparing the multiple frames to detect changes.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein execution of the instruction to detect the occurrence in the user's physical surroundings further causes the occurrence to be detected using one or more sensors, wherein the sensors are integrated into the heads up display.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein execution of the instruction to detect the occurrence in the user's physical surroundings further causes the occurrence to be detected using one or more sensors, wherein the sensors are external to the heads up display and configured to transmit sensed information to the heads up display.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the additional content includes at least one of a video of the occurrence and text indicating the occurrence.

11. A system for presenting additional content in a virtual reality environment on a heads up display showing main content without interfering with a user's viewing of the main content, the system comprising:

one or more sensors; and

control circuitry configured to:

generate for display, in a first portion of a virtual reality environment in the heads up display, main content, wherein the first portion corresponds to a foreground area of a visual field of a user;

detect, using the one or more sensors, an occurrence in the user's physical surroundings, wherein the occurrence is a change in the physical surrounding that is external to the user; and

in response to detecting an occurrence in the user's physical surroundings, generate for display, in a second portion of the virtual reality environment in the heads up display, additional content to assist the user in reacting to the occurrence and an option to provide user input to react to the occurrence, wherein the second portion corresponds to a peripheral area of the first visual field of the user.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more sensors comprises a movement detection module configured to detect occurrences in the user's physical surroundings by capturing multiple frames of the user's physical surroundings and comparing the multiple frames to detect changes.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more sensors, wherein the sensors are integrated into the heads up display.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more sensors are external to the heads up display and configured to transmit sensed information to the heads up display.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the additional content includes at least one of a video of the occurrence and text indicating the occurrence.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the option to provide user input comprises an option to respond with audio input.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the option to provide user input comprises an option to respond with audio input.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the option to provide user input comprises an option to respond with audio input.
