Abstract

An apparatus comprising a switchable optical filter comprising a layer of switchable material, the switchable material comprising a photochromic/thermochromic, a photochromic/photochromic, or a photochromic/electrochromic compound; a first light source providing light of a wavelength that causes the switchable material to transition from a faded state to a dark state, or a dark state to a faded state; and a switch for controlling activation of the first light source.

Claims (27)

1. A vehicle comprising:

a switchable optical filter comprising a layer of switchable material, the switchable material comprising:

a photochromic compound configured to cause the switchable material to transition from a first state to a second state in response to light of a wavelength within a first range of wavelengths, and from the second state to the first state in response to light of a wavelength within a second range of wavelengths,

wherein a light transmittance of the switchable optical filter in the first state is greater than a light transmittance of the switchable optical filter in the second state.

2. The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a display adjacent the switchable optical filter.

3. The vehicle of claim 2 , wherein the switchable optical filter is spaced apart from a surface of the display.

4. The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a first light source configured to provide light of a wavelength within the first range of wavelengths.

5. The vehicle of claim 4 , wherein the first light source is located at a periphery of the switchable optical filter.

6. The vehicle of claim 4 , wherein the first light source is on a plane parallel, or substantially parallel, to a display adjacent the switchable optical filter.

7. The vehicle of claim 4 , wherein the first light source is offset from a plane of a display adjacent the switchable optical filter, a plane of the switchable optical filter, or a plane of the display and a plane of the switchable optical filter.

8. The vehicle of claim 4 , wherein the first light source is adjacent to one or more edges or one or more surfaces of the switchable optical filter.

9. The vehicle of claim 4 , wherein the first light source is configured to provide light with a wavelength of less than about 450 nm, or from about 350 nm to about 420 nm.

10. The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a second light source configured to provide light of a wavelength within the second range of wavelengths.

11. The vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the second light source is located at a periphery of the switchable optical filter.

12. The vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the second light source is on a plane parallel, or substantially parallel, to a display adjacent the switchable optical filter.

13. The vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the second light source is offset from a plane of a display adjacent the switchable optical filter, a plane of the switchable optical filter, or a plane of the display and a plane of the switchable optical filter.

14. The vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the second light source is adjacent to one or more edges or one or more surfaces of the switchable optical filter.

15. The vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the second light source is configured to provide light with a wavelength from about 450 nm to about 650 nm, or light with a wavelength from about 575 nm to about 650 nm.

16. The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a UV blocking layer adjacent the switchable optical filter.

17. A vehicle comprising:

a switchable optical filter comprising a layer of switchable material, the switchable material comprising a photochromic and thermochromic compound configured to cause the switchable material to:

transition from a first state to a second state in response to light of a wavelength within a first range of wavelengths, and transition from the second state to the first state in response to heat; or

transition from the first state to the second state in response to heat, and transition from the second state to the first state in response to light of a wavelength within a second range of wavelengths,

wherein a light transmittance of the switchable optical filter in the first state is greater than a light transmittance of the switchable optical filter in the second state.

18. The vehicle of claim 17 , further comprising a display adjacent the switchable optical filter.

19. The vehicle of claim 17 , further comprising a light source configured to provide light of a wavelength within the first range of wavelengths.

20. The vehicle of claim 17 , further comprising a UV blocking layer adjacent the switchable optical filter.
