Abstract

A minimally invasive dilation device includes a plurality of rigid arms radially arrayed about a center and a dilating member positioned between the arms. A stylus may occupy the center. An outer flexible sleeve may be circumferentially secured to the arms, lying within or without the plurality of arms. An inner mesh may surround the stylus and dilating member. The device may be introduced into tissue toward a targeted area, while in a closed configuration. The dilating member may be a balloon, wherein upon inflation of the balloon, the arms are pushed radially outward, expanding the device and dilating the surrounding tissue. The dilating member may be a tube, wherein upon insertion of the tube, the arms are pushed radially outward. A cannula may be inserted inside the plurality of arms to keep the arms in an open configuration, and the dilating member may be withdrawn, providing an open passageway through the device to the targeted area. The device may be used with a neural monitoring system.

Claims (29)

1. A dilation device comprising:

a frame with a central opening therein;

five arm clamps, each arm clamp attached to the frame; and

five arms, each arm attached to one of the five arm clamps and being spaced apart from the frame, the five arms being translatable and a first arm and a second arm of the five arms being movable together based on a single manipulation of the frame,

an arm retention clip including a plurality of circumferentially located, spaced-apart short prongs and a plurality of circumferentially located, spaced apart intermediate length prongs, wherein the short prongs are positioned where adjacent arm clamps touch, and wherein the intermediate length prongs are positioned through the central opening so as to be partially positionable in between the first, second and third arms to thereby aid in holding the dilation device closed during insertion into a tissue or a natural passageway, the arm retention clip including a stylus that projects outwardly from a central disk so as to be spaced-away and circumscribed by the intermediate length prongs with one or more laterally projecting tabs positioned away from a center of the frame so that when the arm retention clip is positioned within the central opening, the tabs being sized and shaped so as to engage a complementary correspondingly positioned groove on each arm;

wherein the stylus defines a cannulation sized to receive a small diameter shaft,

wherein one of the first arm, the second arm or a third arm of the five arms includes a first protrusion and a first groove along a longitudinal axis the length of the one of the first arm, the second arm or the third arm, the first groove facing the center of the frame with one of the arm clamps of the five arm clamps corresponding to the one of the first, second or third arm includes a first recess that receives the first protrusion, and

wherein the first arm includes a length with a first end attached to the one of the arm clamps and a second end remote from the frame, the first arm having a depth in a radial direction, the depth tapering from the first end toward the second end over at least part of length.

2. The dilation device of claim 1 , further comprising a second groove within the first groove.

3. The dilation device of claim 1 , wherein the first protrusion of the one of the first, second or third arm is oriented transverse to a direction associated with sliding movement of the corresponding arm clamp.

4. The dilation device of claim 3 , wherein the first protrusion and the first recess form a dovetail connection.

5. The dilation device of claim 1 , wherein one of the five arms is adapted to toe relative to the frame.

6. A system comprising:

a dilation device comprising:

a frame defining a central opening;

a first arm clamp, a second arm clamp, and a third arm clamp, each arm clamp attached to the frame in circumferentially spaced relation to one another; and

a first arm attached to the first arm clamp, a second arm attached to the second arm clamp, and a third arm attached to the third arm clamp, the first, second and third arms being movable from a closed position to an open position, and

an arm retention clip including a plurality of circumferentially located, spaced-apart short prongs and a plurality of circumferentially located, spaced apart intermediate length prongs, wherein the short prongs are positioned where adjacent arm clamps touch, and wherein the intermediate length prongs are positioned through the central opening so as to be partially positionable in between the first, second and third arms to thereby aid in holding the dilation device closed during insertion into a tissue or a natural passageway, the arm retention clip including a stylus that projects outwardly from a central disk so as to be spaced-away and within the intermediate length prongs with one or more laterally projecting tabs positioned away from the frame when the arm retention clip is positioned within the central opening, the tabs being sized and shaped so as to engage a complementary distally positioned groove in each arm,

wherein the stylus defines a cannulation sized to receive a small diameter shaft, and

wherein when the first, second and third arms are closed so as to be positioned around the stylus so that the intermediate length prongs are positioned between adjacent arms, inward facing surfaces of the first, second and third arms are flush with an outward facing surface of the stylus.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the stylus includes flat surfaces.

8. A dilation device comprising:

a frame having a central opening and a plurality of slots circumferentially defined in a closed perimeter;

a first, second, third and fourth arm clamp, each arm clamp slidably received within a slot so as to be attached to the frame in circumferentially spaced relation to one another;

a first arm received in a dovetail slot defined by the first arm clamp, the first arm toeable relative to the frame and the first arm clamp translatable relative to the frame wherein translation of the first arm clamp is at least partially within one of the slots of the frame; and

a second, a third and a fourth arm, attached to the second, third and fourth arm clamps, respectively,

an arm retention clip including a plurality of circumferentially located, spaced-apart short prongs and a plurality of circumferentially located, spaced apart intermediate length prongs, wherein the short prongs are positioned where adjacent arm clamps touch, and wherein the intermediate length prongs that are positioned through the central opening so as to be partially located in between the first, second and third arms to thereby aid in holding the dilation device closed during insertion into a tissue or a natural passageway, the arm retention clip including a stylus that projects outwardly from a central disk so as to be spaced-away and circumscribed by the intermediate length prongs with one or more laterally projecting tabs positioned away from the frame when the arm retention clip is positioned within the central opening, the tabs being sized and shaped so as to engage a complementary correspondingly positioned groove on each arm,

wherein the stylus defines a cannulation sized to receive a small diameter shaft, and

wherein the first arm includes a surface facing a center of the frame, the surface including a groove along a length thereof.
