Abstract

A rod reducer including a housing defining an opening, a body member defining an opening and a slot, a shaft disposed through the opening of the housing and coupled to the opening of the body member, an anvil including a linkage extending therefrom, the linkage coupled to the body member and the anvil, a plurality of arm members, and a biasing element disposed between the body member and the anvil. A pin of the linkage is slidably disposed within the slot, and the biasing element is configured to bias the anvil distally with respect to the body member. Rotation of the shaft translates into linear movement, relative to the housing, of the shaft, the body member, and the anvil. The arm members are coupled to the housing and movable towards a parallel configuration as the anvil is advanced away from the housing to engage a bone screw.

Claims (36)

1. A rod reducer comprising:

a housing including a proximal-most surface and a distal-most surface and an opening extending between the proximal-most surface and the distal-most surface, the opening having internal threads;

a shaft received through the opening and having external threads engageable with the internal threads;

first and second arm members having distal ends of the first and second arm members configured to engage a screw, the first and second arm members movable between a first orientation and a second orientation;

an anvil having a distal end having a rod-receiving saddle for contacting a spinal rod;

a spring disposed along a central longitudinal axis of the housing between the proximal-most surface of the housing and the anvil and extending distally beyond the housing, the anvil including a linkage configured to receive the spring,

wherein rotation of the shaft causes axial displacement of the anvil to move the spinal rod into the screw.

2. The rod reducer of claim 1 , wherein the spring applies a proximal bias, a distal bias, or both to the anvil.

3. The rod reducer of claim 1 , wherein the shaft and the spring extend coaxially.

4. The rod reducer of claim 1 , wherein the rod-receiving saddle is arch-shaped.

5. The rod reducer of claim 1 , wherein the shaft further includes a driving feature at a proximal end thereof for driving the shaft.

6. The rod reducer of claim 1 , further comprising a body member having openings for receiving the first and second arm members therethrough.

7. The rod reducer of claim 6 , wherein the linkage is coupled to the anvil and to the body member.

8. The rod reducer of claim 6 , wherein rotation of the shaft causes axial displacement of the body member.

9. The rod reducer of claim 1 , wherein the distal ends of each of the first and second arm members each include projections for engaging the screw.

10. The rod reducer of claim 1 , wherein in the first orientation, the first and second arm members are spaced apart from one another, and in the second orientation, the first and second arm members are in an approximated position to engage the screw.

11. The rod reducer of claim 10 , wherein in the second orientation, the first and second arm members are in a parallel configuration.

12. A rod reducer comprising:

a housing including a proximal-most surface and a distal-most surface and an opening extending between the proximal-most surface and the distal-most surface, the opening having internal threads;

a shaft received through the opening and having external threads engageable with the internal threads;

first and second arm members having projections at distal ends of the first and second arm members configured to engage a screw, the first and second arm members movable between a spaced apart position and an approximated position in which the first and second arm members are configured to engage the screw;

an anvil having a distal end having a rod-receiving saddle for contacting a spinal rod;

a spring disposed along a central longitudinal axis of the housing between the proximal-most surface of the housing and the anvil and extending distally beyond the housing, the anvil including a linkage configured to receive the spring,

wherein rotation of the shaft causes axial displacement of the anvil to move the spinal rod into the screw.

13. The rod reducer of claim 12 , wherein in the approximated position, the first and second arm members are in a parallel configuration.

14. The rod reducer of claim 12 , wherein the rod-receiving saddle is arch-shaped.

15. The rod reducer of claim 12 , wherein the first and second arm members are connected to the housing.

16. The rod reducer of claim 12 , wherein the shaft further includes a driving feature at a proximal end thereof for driving the shaft.

17. The rod reducer of claim 12 , wherein the shaft and the spring extend coaxially.

18. A rod reducer comprising:

a housing including a proximal-most surface and a distal-most surface and an opening extending between the proximal-most surface and the distal-most surface, the opening having internal threads;

a shaft received through the opening and having external threads engageable with the internal threads;

first and second arm members having distal ends of the first and second arm members configured to engage a screw, the first and second arm members movable between a first orientation and a second orientation;

an anvil having a distal end having a rod-receiving saddle for contacting a spinal rod;

a spring configured to exert a force on the anvil and extending distally beyond the housing, the anvil disposed entirely distal of the spring and including a linkage configured to receive the spring,

wherein rotation of the shaft causes axial displacement of the anvil to move the spinal rod into the screw.
