Abstract

One embodiment provides a computer implemented method of for monitoring and upgrading a dual-flash device. The method includes performing an OS upgrade on a server; writing an upgraded OS to the dual-flash device; updating a grub.cfg file corresponding to the upgraded OS; and deleting old OS files from the dual-flash device.

Claims (52)

1. A computer implemented method for monitoring and upgrading a dual-flash device, the method comprising:

performing an operating system (OS) upgrade on a server;

writing an upgraded OS to the dual-flash device, wherein writing the upgraded OS to the dual-flash device comprises writing the upgraded OS to a first SD card of the dual-flash device before writing the upgraded OS to a second SD card of the dual-flash device;

updating a grub.cfg file corresponding to the upgraded OS; and

deleting old OS files from the dual-flash device.

2. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

performing a comparison between a boot drive of the server and the dual-flash device before writing the upgraded OS to the dual-flash device.

3. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

performing a checksum after writing the upgraded OS to the first SD card and before writing the upgraded OS to the second SD card.

4. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating a checksum file, using a dual-flash monitor module, to detect file corruption within the dual-flash device.

5. The computer implemented method of claim 4 , further comprising:

creating partitions on the dual-flash device in response to detecting file corruption within the dual-flash device;

creating a filesystem on the dual-flash device;

mounting a first partition to the dual-flash device;

installing a grand unified bootloader (GRUB) to the first partition of the dual-flash device;

updating and copying a grub.cfg file to the first partition of the dual-flash device; and

copying OS files to the first partition of the dual-flash device.

6. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

monitoring hardware status of the dual-flash device using a baseboard management controller (BMC); and

generating a user notification in response to detection of a hardware failure at the dual-flash device.

7. A system for monitoring and upgrading a dual-flash device, comprising:

a server;

a boot drive configured to perform an operating system (OS) upgrade on the server; and

a dual-flash monitor module configured to: write an upgraded OS to the dual-flash device; update a grub.cfg file corresponding to the upgraded OS; and delete old OS files from the dual-flash device, wherein the dual-flash monitor module is further configured to write the upgraded OS to a first SD card of the dual-flash device before writing the upgraded OS to a second SD card of the dual-flash device.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the dual-flash monitor module is further configured to perform a comparison between the boot drive of the server and the dual-flash device before writing the upgraded OS to the dual-flash device.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the dual-flash monitor module is further configured to perform a checksum after writing the upgraded OS to the first SD card and before writing the upgraded OS to the second SD card.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the dual-flash monitor module is further configured to generate a checksum file to detect file corruption within the dual-flash device.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the dual-flash monitor module is further configured to:

create partitions on the dual-flash device in response to detecting file corruption within the dual-flash device;

create a filesystem on the dual-flash device;

mount a first partition to the dual-flash device;

install a grand unified bootloader (GRUB) to the first partition of the dual-flash device;

update and copying a grub.cfg file to the first partition of the dual-flash device; and

copy OS files to the first partition of the dual-flash device.

12. The system of claim 7 , further comprising:

a baseboard management controller configured to monitor hardware status of the dual-flash device; and

a platform monitor module (Platmon) configured to generate a user notification in response to detection of a hardware failure at the dual-flash device.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform a dual-flash device monitoring and upgrading operation, the operation comprising:

performing an operating system (OS) upgrade on a server;

writing an upgraded OS to the dual-flash device, wherein writing the upgraded OS to the dual-flash device comprises writing the upgraded OS to a first SD card of the dual-flash device before writing the upgraded OS to a second SD card of the dual-flash device;

updating a grub.cfg file corresponding to the upgraded OS; and

deleting old OS files from the dual-flash device.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the operation further comprises:

performing a comparison between a boot drive of the server and the dual-flash device before writing the upgraded OS to the dual-flash device.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the operation further comprises:

performing a checksum after writing the upgraded OS to the first SD card and before writing the upgraded OS to the second SD card.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the operation further comprises:

generating a checksum file, using a dual-flash monitor module, to detect file corruption within the dual-flash device.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the operation further comprises:

monitoring hardware status of the dual-flash device using a baseboard management controller (BMC); and

generating a user notification in response to detection of a hardware failure at the dual-flash device.
