Abstract

A power control system may include at least one of batteries, a motor, and a data logic analyzer that can interpret certain variable conditions of a transport, such as a tractor trailer, moving along a road or highway. The data can be used to determine when to apply supplemental power to the wheels of a trailer to reduce fuel usage. One example device may include at least one of: a power creation module that generates electrical power, a battery which store the electrical power, a motor affixed to a trailer axle of a trailer which provides a turning force to the trailer axle when enabled to operate from the stored electrical power of the battery, and a motor controller configured to initiate the motor to operate according to a predefined sensor condition.

Claims (51)

1. An apparatus for use in a tractor-trailer vehicle, the apparatus comprising:

a first electric motor-generator coupled to a first wheel of a trailer of the tractor-trailer vehicle, the first electric motor-generator to provide, in a first mode of operation, a motive rotational force to the first wheel to supplement a primary motive force supplied to the first wheel, and to provide, in a second mode of operation, a regenerative braking force;

a suspension assembly connected to a suspension power capturing module, the suspension to generate energy via an up/down movement and to supply the energy to the suspension power capturing module; and

a controller in communication with the first electric motor-generator and suspension power capturing module, the controller to:

receive sensor inputs from a plurality of different types of sensors,

compare the plurality of sensor inputs to predetermined, corresponding threshold values, and

control the first electric motor-generator to select one of the first mode of operation, the second mode of operation, or a third mode of operation and to control energy from the suspension power capturing module.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising:

an energy store to supply energy to power the first electric motor-generator in the first mode of operation.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising:

an energy store to receive energy by the regenerative braking force in the second mode of operation.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising:

a second electric motor-generator coupled to a second wheel of the trailer, the second electric motor-generator.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the suspension assembly is a retrofit suspension assembly for attachment beneath the trailer.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising:

an energy store configured to receive energy from at least one of a compressed air energy source and flywheel energy source.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising:

a cooling system coupled to the energy store and configured to cool the energy store.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , comprising:

an energy store that includes a battery array that is submerged within a non-conductive fluid of the cooling system.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is to receive control signals from a controller area network bus (CANbus) or an electronic control module (ECM) interface of a tractor of the tractor-trailer vehicle.

10. A method, comprising:

providing, by a first electric motor-generator coupled to a first wheel of a trailer of tractor-trailer vehicle, an assistive motive force to the first wheel during a first mode of operation,

providing, in a second mode of operation, a regenerative braking force to the first wheel;

generating, by a suspension assembly of the trailer, energy via an up/down movement of the suspension assembly;

supplying the energy generated by the suspension assembly to a suspension power capturing module of the trailer;

receiving, by a controller coupled to the first electric motor-generator and to the suspension power capturing module, sensor inputs from a plurality of different types of sensors;

comparing, by the controller, the sensor inputs to predetermined, corresponding threshold values;

controlling, by the controller, the first electric motor-generator to select one of the first mode of operation or the second mode of operation based on the sensor inputs; and

controlling energy from the suspension power capturing module.

11. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

receiving, by an energy store, energy regenerated by the first electric motor-generator.

12. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

receiving, by an energy store, energy generated by at least one of compressed air and a flywheel.

13. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

supplying, by an energy store, energy to power the first electric motor-generator in the first mode of operation.

14. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

receiving, by an energy store, energy regenerated by the first electric motor-generator.

15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

providing, by a second electric motor-generator coupled to second wheel of the trailer a motive rotational force to the second wheel.

16. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

receiving, by the controller, control signals from a controller area network bus (CANbus) or an electronic control module (ECM) interface of the tractor.

17. An apparatus for use in a tractor-trailer vehicle including a trailer having a first wheel and a second wheel, the apparatus comprising:

a first electric motor-generator and a second electric motor-generator, respectively coupled to the first wheel and the second wheel to supplement, in a first mode of operation, a primary motive rotational force provided to the first wheel and to the second wheel, and to provide, in a second mode of operation, a regenerative braking force;

a suspension assembly connected to a suspension power capturing module, the suspension assembly to generate energy via an up/down movement and to supply the energy to the suspension power capturing module; and

a controller in communication with the first electric motor-generator, the second motor-generator, and the suspension power capturing module, the controller configured to:

receive sensor inputs from a plurality of different types of sensors,

compare the plurality of sensor inputs to predetermined, corresponding threshold values, and

control the first electric motor-generator and the second electric motor-generator to independently select one of the first mode of operation and the second mode of operation and to control energy from the suspension power capturing module.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , comprising:

an energy store that supplies energy to power the first electric motor-generator and the second electric motor-generator in the first mode of operation and to which energy is supplied in the second mode of operation.
