Abstract

A bumper spring assembly having a one piece mandrel including an integral head piece is further configured with a cage assembly retained on the mandrel with a cage nut locked to the mandrel to obviate the need for pins, set screws, and the like, to provide a more robust assembly. In two embodiments the cage nut is locked to the mandrel in a swaging operation. Improved flow of fluids through and around the bumper spring assembly are also provided.

Claims (34)

1. A bumper spring assembly, comprising:

a one piece mandrel having a head end and a tail end, the tail end having a concentric bore at a distal portion of the tail end with external threads surrounding the distal portion of the tail end;

a bumper spring disposed concentrically on the mandrel;

an end piece having internal threads threaded onto the external threads of the tail end such that the bumper spring is confined between the head end and the end piece,

wherein the end piece is secured to the tail end by expanding an outermost end of the bored distal portion of the mandrel outward to secure the end piece to the bored distal portion of the mandrel.

2. The bumper spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the end piece comprises:

a bumper spring cage disposed concentrically on the mandrel; and

a cage nut having internal threads,

wherein internal threads of the cage nut are threaded onto the external threads of the tail end to thereby secure the bumper spring and the bumper spring cage between the head end of the mandrel and the cage nut.

3. The bumper spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the head end comprises an integral headpiece including a fishing neck and a plurality of longitudinal stabilizing ridges disposed around an outside diameter of the headpiece.

4. The bumper spring assembly of claim 3 , wherein head end further comprises a plurality of concentric flow reliefs and a streamline taper.

5. The bumper spring assembly of claim 4 , wherein the concentric flow reliefs include a plurality of longitudinal undercuts in the outermost diameter of the headpiece, alternately disposed with the longitudinal stabilizing ridges around a circumference of the headpiece.

6. The bumper spring assembly of claim 2 , wherein the bumper spring cage comprises:

an internal bore configured to receive the tail end of the mandrel; and

one or more flow ports forming a fluidic connection with the internal bore.

7. The bumper spring assembly of claim 6 , wherein the flow ports are disposed at equal intervals around a circumference of the bumper spring cage.

8. The bumper spring assembly of claim 6 , wherein the flow ports further comprise a relieved channel for each flow port, each relieved channel including a series of egress sweeps, which are narrow, substantially parallel grooves formed in each relieved channel.

The bumper spring assembly of claim 2 , wherein the bumper spring cage further comprises a shoulder formed inside the bumper spring cage, the shoulder configured such that the cage nut bears against the shoulder when the cage nut is fully threaded on the distal portion of the tail end to thereby position the bumper spring cage against the spring.

10. The bumper spring assembly of claim 2 , wherein expanding the outermost end of the bored distal portion of the mandrel causes the outermost end of the bored distal portion to become flared thereby securing the cage nut into the threaded end of the mandrel.

The bumper spring assembly of claim 2 , wherein the distal portion of the tail end includes a region having a reduced outer diameter relative to a nominal outer diameter of the external threads, such that when expanded, the portion having the reduced outer diameter expands to thereby deform against proximate threads of the internally threaded end piece to secure threads of the internally threaded end piece to the bored distal portion of the mandrel.

12. A mandrel for a bumper spring assembly, comprising:

an elongated member having a head end and a tail end, the tail end having a concentric bore at a distal portion of the tail end with external threads surrounding the distal portion of the tail end;

an end piece having internal threads threaded onto the external threads of the tail end, the end piece configured to secure a bumper spring between the head end and the end piece,

wherein the end piece is secured to the tail end by expanding an outermost end of the bored distal portion of the elongated member outward to secure the end piece to the bored distal portion of the elongated member.

13. The mandrel of claim 12 , wherein the end piece comprises:

a bumper spring cage disposed concentrically on the elongated member; and

a cage nut having internal threads,

wherein the cage nut is threaded onto the external threads of the tail end to thereby secure the bumper spring cage to the tail end of the elongated member.

14. The mandrel of claim 12 , wherein the head end comprises an integral headpiece including a fishing neck and a plurality of longitudinal stabilizing ridges disposed around an outside diameter of the headpiece.

15. The mandrel of claim 13 , wherein the bumper spring cage comprises:

an internal bore configured to receive the tail end of the elongated member; and

one or more flow ports forming a fluidic connection with the internal bore.

16. The bumper spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein a cold forming process is performed to expand the outermost end of the bored distal portion of the elongated member.

17. The mandrel of claim 12 , wherein a cold forming process is performed to expand the outermost end of the bored distal portion of the elongated member.
