Abstract

An end-effector is disclosed including an ultrasonic blade configured to acoustically couple to an ultrasonic transducer and electrically couple to a pole of an electrical generator and a clamp arm including a clamp jaw and a cantilever electrode fixed to the clamp jaw. The cantilever electrode is configured to electrically couple to an opposite pole of the electrical generator. The clamp arm may include an I-beam shaped clamp arm pad and the cantilever electrode is disposed between the I-beam. The clamp jaw, the cantilever electrode, and the clamp arm pad may define recesses along a length coinciding with the ultrasonic blade. The clamp arm pad may be fixed to the clamp jaw and disposed between the clamp jaw and the cantilever electrode and may extend beyond the surface of the cantilever electrode. The clamp arm may include a stationary gap setting pad and movable floating gap setting pads.

Claims (20)

1. An end-effector, comprising:

a clamp arm; and

an ultrasonic blade acoustically coupled to an ultrasonic transducer and electrically coupled to a first pole of an electrical generator;

wherein the clamp arm comprises:

a clamp arm frame;

a clamp jaw having a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end pivotally movable about a pivot point;

a cantilever electrode comprising a metallic spring material electrically coupled to a second pole of the electrical generator, wherein a proximal end of the cantilever electrode is mechanically fixed to a clamp arm frame connection surface at a proximal end of the clamp arm frame and a distal end that is free to deflect at a distal end of the clamp arm frame, wherein the cantilever electrode defines a surface configured to contact tissue and apply electrical energy to the tissue in contact therewith; and

a clamp arm pad fixed to the clamp jaw and having at least a portion disposed between the clamp jaw and the cantilever electrode and another portion extending beyond the surface of the cantilever electrode and configured to contact the tissue.

2. The end-effector of claim 1 , further comprising a gap pad fixed to the cantilever electrode to set a gap between the ultrasonic blade and the cantilever electrode.

3. The end-effector of claim 2 , wherein the gap pad is located at the proximal end of the cantilever electrode.

4. The end-effector of claim 2 , wherein the gap pad is made of a material having a hardness that is greater than a hardness of a material of the clamp arm pad such that the gap pad has a longer wear life than the clamp arm pad, wherein the gap pad material is non-compliant and the clamp arm pad material is compliant, and wherein the clamp arm pad is made of a compliant material.

5. The end-effector of claim 2 , wherein the gap pad comprises a first gap pad at the proximal end of the cantilever electrode, a second gap pad at the distal end of the cantilever electrode, and a third gap pad located between the proximal end and the distal end.

6. The end-effector of claim 1 , wherein the clamp arm pad comprises a base portion fixedly attached to the clamp jaw and a plurality of teeth extending from the base portion in a direction toward the cantilever electrode.

7. The end-effector of claim 1 , further comprising:

a proximal gap pad fixed to the cantilever electrode to set a gap between the ultrasonic blade and the cantilever electrode;

a distal gap pad located at the distal end of the cantilever electrode; and

a medial gap pad located between the distal end and the proximal end of the cantilever electrode, wherein the proximal gap pad is sized larger than the distal gap pad and the medial gap pad,

wherein the clamp arm pad comprises a base portion fixedly attached to the clamp jaw and a plurality of teeth extending from the base portion in a direction toward the cantilever electrode; and

wherein the cantilever electrode defines a plurality of apertures sized and configured to receive at least one of the proximal gap pad, the medial gap pad, or the distal gap pad and the plurality of teeth therethrough; and

wherein the cantilever electrode defines at least one aperture at the proximal end defining an open end to slidably receive at least one of the proximal gap pad, the medial gap pad, or the distal gap pad.
