Abstract

An end-effector is disclosed. The end-effector includes a clamp arm and an ultrasonic blade configured to acoustically couple to an ultrasonic transducer and electrically couple to a pole of an electrical generator. The clamp arm includes a clamp jaw and an electrode configured to electrically couple to an opposite pole of the electrical generator. In one configuration, the electrode is segmented. In another configuration, the ultrasonic blade includes electrically insulative material deposited on selected areas to prevent electrical shorting in the event of the ultrasonic blade contacts the electrode. In another configuration, the clamp arm, the ultrasonic blade, or both include selectively coated components.

3. The end-effector of claim 2 , wherein the cylindrical insert is positionable into the grooved surface of the distal segment and the pin is positionable through the opening to hold the medial segment and the distal segment together, and wherein the grooved surface and the cylindrical insert allow the medial segment and the distal segment to pivot relative to each other.

4. A medical instrument, comprising:

a clamp arm; and

an ultrasonic blade configured to acoustically couple to an ultrasonic transducer and to electrically couple to a pole of an electrical generator;

wherein the clamp arm comprises:

a clamp jaw; and

a segmented electrode configured to electrically couple to an opposite pole of the electrical generator, wherein segments of the segmented electrode are configured to pivot relative each other, wherein each segment of the segmented electrode comprises a spring element between the clamp arm and a portion of the segmented electrode, wherein the segments comprise a first segment and a second segment linked by a pin, and wherein the first segment comprises a cylindrical insert that is receivable in a grooved surface of the second segment.

5. The medical instrument of claim 4 , wherein the second segment comprises:

a rounded distal end; and

an opening to receive the pin to rotatably fix the first segment to the second segment.

6. The medical instrument of claim 5 , wherein the cylindrical insert is positionable into the the second segment and the pin is positionable through the opening of the second segment to hold the first segment and the second segment together, and wherein the grooved surface and the cylindrical insert allow the first segment and the second segment to pivot relative to each other.

7. An end-effector, comprising:

an ultrasonic blade configured to acoustically couple to an ultrasonic transducer and to electrically couple to a pole of an electrical generator; and

a clamp arm, comprising:

a clamp jaw; and

a segmented electrode configured to electrically couple to an opposite pole of the electrical generator, wherein the segmented electrode comprises three segments linked by pins, wherein a distal segment of the three segments of the segmented electrode comprises:

a rounded distal end;

an opening to receive one of the pins; and

a grooved surface at a proximal end thereof.

8. The end-effector of claim 7 , wherein a medial segment of the three segments of the segmented electrode comprises a cylindrical insert that is receivable in the grooved surface of the distal segment and wherein the one of the pins rotatably fixes the distal segment and the medial segment.

9. The end-effector of claim 8 , wherein the cylindrical insert is positionable into the grooved surface of the distal segment and the one of the pins is positionable through the opening to hold the medial segment and the distal segment together, and wherein the grooved surface and the cylindrical insert allow the medial segment and the distal segment to pivot relative to each other.

10. A medical apparatus, comprising:

a clamp arm; and

an ultrasonic blade configured to acoustically couple to an ultrasonic transducer and to electrically couple to a pole of an electrical generator;

wherein the clamp arm comprises:

a clamp jaw; and

a segmented electrode configured to electrically couple to an opposite pole of the electrical generator, wherein the segmented electrode comprises three segments linked by pins, wherein a medial segment of the three segments comprises a cylindrical insert that is receivable in a proximal grooved surface of a distal segment of the three segments, and one of the pins rotatably fixes the distal segment and the medial segment.

11. A medical apparatus, comprising:
