Abstract

A method and apparatus for highlighting a program listing in a set of program listings based on selection criteria. The selection criteria may indicate that the a broadcaster has agreed to pay a service provider in return for the service provider ensuring that a program listing, corresponding to the program of the broadcaster, is highlighted in a program page that displays a set of program listings, such as television program listings. If there are multiple program listings, listed in a program page, that are to be highlighted, then details of the respective contracts may be used to determine which program listing to highlight. Such details may include the total contract value, a ratio of contract value-to-page view, and/or the time of contract formation.

Claims (47)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a selection of a content item listing;

transmitting for display a graphical user interface to a plurality of client devices, wherein each of the graphical user interfaces comprises the content item listing;

highlighting the content item listing of a graphical user interface of at least one of the plurality of client devices, wherein the highlighted content item listing is visually distinguishable from other content item listings;

receiving, from the plurality of client devices, first selection data that indicates a selection of the selected content item listing while the selected content item listing is highlighted;

receiving, from the plurality of client devices, second selection data that indicates a selection of the selected content item listing while the selected content item listing is not highlighted;

calculating, using control circuitry, a difference between (1) total number of times the selected content item listing was selected by the first plurality of users while the particular content item listing was highlighted, and (2) a total number of times the selected content item listing was selected by a second plurality of users while the selected content item listing was not highlighted; and

causing to be transmitted the calculated difference to a server.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the server is a content provider of the particular content item listing.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving highlight criteria that are used to select one or more programs that includes the first program for being highlighted.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of client devices includes at least one of digital video recorders, personal computers, handheld devices, or display devices.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing a selection ratio to be generated based on the calculated difference.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising causing to be transmitted the selection ratio to the server.

7. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

receive a selection of a content item listing;

transmit for display a graphical user interface to a plurality of client devices, wherein each of the graphical user interfaces comprises the content item listing;

highlight the content item listing of a graphical user interface of at least one of the plurality of client devices, wherein the highlighted content item listing is visually distinguishable from other content item listings;

receive, from the plurality of client devices, first selection data that indicates a selection of the selected content item listing while the selected content item listing is highlighted;

receive, from the plurality of client devices, second selection data that indicates a selection of the selected content item listing while the selected content item listing is not highlighted;

calculate a difference between (1) total number of times the selected content item listing was selected by the first plurality of users while the particular content item listing was highlighted, and (2) a total number of times the selected content item listing was selected by a second plurality of users while the selected content item listing was not highlighted; and

cause to be transmitted the calculated difference to a server.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the server is a content provider of the particular content item listing.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

receive highlight criteria that are used to select one or more programs that includes the first program for being highlighted.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of client devices includes at least one of digital video recorders, personal computers, handheld devices, or display devices.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

cause a selection ratio to be generated based on the calculated difference.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

cause to be transmitted the selection ratio to the server.

13. A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions encoded thereon, that when executed by control circuitry causes the control circuitry to:

receive a selection of a content item listing;

transmit for display a graphical user interface to a plurality of client devices, wherein each of the graphical user interfaces comprises the content item listing;

highlight the content item listing of a graphical user interface of at least one of the plurality of client devices, wherein the highlighted content item listing is visually distinguishable from other content item listings;

receive, from the plurality of client devices, first selection data that indicates a selection of the selected content item listing while the selected content item listing is highlighted;

receive, from the plurality of client devices, second selection data that indicates a selection of the selected content item listing while the selected content item listing is not highlighted;

calculate a difference between (1) total number of times the selected content item listing was selected by the first plurality of users while the particular content item listing was highlighted, and (2) a total number of times the selected content item listing was selected by a second plurality of users while the selected content item listing was not highlighted; and

cause to be transmitted the calculated difference to a server.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the server is a content provider of the particular content item listing.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions further cause the control circuitry to:

receive highlight criteria that are used to select one or more programs that includes the first program for being highlighted.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of client devices includes at least one of digital video recorders, personal computers, handheld devices, or display devices.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions further cause the control circuitry to:

cause a selection ratio to be generated based on the calculated difference.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the instructions further cause the control circuitry to:

cause to be transmitted the selection ratio to the server.
