Abstract

An electrochemical direct heat to electricity converter includes a primary thermal energy source; a working fluid; an electrochemical cell comprising at least one membrane electrode assembly including a first porous electrode, a second porous electrode and at least one membrane, wherein the at least one membrane is sandwiched between the first and second porous electrodes and is a conductor of ions of the working fluid; an energy storage reservoir; and an external load. The electrochemical cell operates on heat to produce electricity. When thermal energy available from the primary thermal energy source is greater than necessary to meet demands of the external load, excess energy is stored in the energy storage reservoir, and when the thermal energy available from the primary thermal energy source is insufficient to meet the demands of the external load, at least a portion of the excess energy stored in the energy storage reservoir is used to supply power to the external load.

Claims (17)

1. An electrochemical direct heat to electricity converter comprising:

a working fluid;

at least one membrane electrode assembly including a first porous electrode, a second porous electrode and at least one membrane, wherein the at least one membrane is a conductor of ions of the working fluid;

a first conduit containing the working fluid at a first pressure and a second conduit containing the working fluid at a second pressure which is lower than the first pressure, wherein the first conduit is a high pressure conduit coupled to the first porous electrode and the second conduit is a low pressure conduit coupled to the second porous electrode; and

a high pressure working fluid storage reservoir and a low pressure working fluid storage reservoir for energy storage,

wherein the convertor stores energy in the high pressure working fluid storage reservoir as pressurized working fluid by pumping the working fluid from the low pressure working fluid storage reservoir to the high pressure working fluid storage reservoir, and

wherein the convertor converts the stored energy into electrical energy as needed by extracting energy from the pressurized working fluid stored in the high pressure working fluid storage reservoir by expanding the working fluid from the high pressure working fluid storage reservoir back to the low pressure working fluid storage reservoir.

2. The electrochemical direct heat to electricity convertor according to claim 1 , wherein the working fluid is hydrogen.

3. The electrochemical direct heat to electricity convertor according to claim 1 , wherein the high pressure and low pressure working fluid storage reservoirs contain high pressure and low pressure metal hydride material for hydrogen storage.

4. The electrochemical direct heat to electricity convertor according to claim 1 , wherein the high pressure and low pressure working fluid storage reservoirs are thermally coupled to each other.

5. The electrochemical direct heat to electricity convertor according to claim 1 , further comprising:

an external load;

a primary thermal energy source; and

a thermal storage reservoir thermally coupled to the at least one membrane electrode assembly;

wherein when thermal energy available from the primary thermal energy source is greater than necessary to meet demands of the external load, excess thermal energy is stored in the thermal storage reservoir, and

wherein when the thermal energy available from the primary thermal energy source is insufficient to meet the demands of the external load, at least a portion of the excess thermal energy stored in the thermal storage reservoir is used to supply power to the external load.

6. The electrochemical direct heat to electricity convertor according to claim 5 , wherein the working fluid is hydrogen, wherein the high pressure working fluid reservoir contains a high pressure metal hydride material for storing hydrogen, and wherein the low pressure working fluid reservoir contains a low pressure metal hydride material for storing hydrogen.
