Surgical instrument comprising a control system responsive to software configurations
A surgical instrument comprising a control system configured to alter and/or reduce the capability of the surgical instrument is disclosed. Also disclosed is a surgical instrument that can upload different firmware from a surgical hub such that the surgical instrument can be used to perform different surgical techniques.
1. A surgical instrument system, comprising:
a surgical communications hub; and
a surgical instrument comprising a controller, a first set of firmware, and a communications system configured to communicate with said surgical communications hub, wherein said first set of firmware is suitable for said surgical instrument to perform a first surgical technique, and wherein said controller is selectively operable by the user of said surgical instrument system to upload a second set of firmware from said surgical communications hub that makes said surgical instrument suitable to perform a second surgical technique which is different than said first surgical technique.
2. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument comprises:
a shaft;
an end effector;
an articulation joint rotatably connecting said end effector to said shaft; and
an articulation drive system comprising an articulation motor in communication with said controller, wherein said controller configured to move said end effector through a first articulation range when said controller is using said first set of firmware, wherein said controller configured to move said end effector through a second articulation range when said controller is using said second set of firmware, and wherein said first articulation range is less than said second articulation range.
3. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument comprises:
a shaft;
an end effector;
an articulation joint rotatably connecting said end effector to said shaft; and
an articulation drive system comprising an articulation motor in communication with said controller, wherein said controller configured to move said end effector through a first articulation range when said controller is using said first set of firmware, wherein said controller configured to move said end effector through a second articulation range when said controller is using said second set of firmware, and wherein said first articulation range is greater than said second articulation range.
4. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument comprises:
a shaft;
an end effector;
a first articulation joint defining a first articulation axis;
a second articulation joint defining a second articulation axis;
a first articulation drive system comprising a first articulation motor in communication with said controller; and
a second articulation drive system comprising a second articulation motor in communication with said controller, wherein said controller configured to use said first articulation drive system but not said second articulation drive system when said controller is using said first set of firmware, and wherein said controller configured to use said first articulation drive system and said second articulation drive system when said controller is using said second set of firmware.
5. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument comprises:
a shaft;
an end effector;
a first articulation joint defining a first articulation axis;
a second articulation joint defining a second articulation axis;
a first articulation drive system comprising a first articulation motor in communication with said controller;
a second articulation drive system comprising a second articulation motor in communication with said controller, wherein said controller configured to use said first articulation drive system and said second articulation drive system when said controller is using said first set of firmware, and wherein said controller configured to use said first articulation drive system but not said second articulation drive system when said controller is using said second set of firmware.
6. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument comprises:
a shaft;
an end effector, wherein said end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw; and
a drive system configured to move said first jaw relative to said second jaw, wherein said drive system is in communication with said controller, wherein said controller is configured to move said first jaw through a first range of motion when using said first set of firmware, wherein said controller is configured to move said first jaw through a second range of motion when using said second set of firmware, and wherein said second range of motion is larger than and overlaps said first range of motion.
7. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument comprises:
a shaft;
an end effector, wherein said end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw; and
a drive system configured to move said first jaw relative to said second jaw, wherein said drive system is in communication with said controller, wherein said controller is configured to move said first jaw through a first range of motion when using said first set of firmware, wherein said controller is configured to move said first jaw through a second range of motion when using said second set of firmware, and wherein said first range of motion is larger than and overlaps said second range of motion.

The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument comprises a drive system including an electric motor in communication with said controller and a power source, wherein said controller limits the power supplied to said electric motor from said power source to a first power limit when using said first set of firmware, wherein said controller limits the power supplied to said electric motor from said power source to a second power limit when using said second set of firmware, and wherein said second power limit is higher than said first power limit.

The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument comprises a drive system including an electric motor in communication with said controller and a power source, wherein said controller limits the power supplied to said electric motor from said power source to a first power limit when using said first set of firmware, wherein said controller limits the power supplied to said electric motor from said power source to a second power limit when using said second set of firmware, and wherein said second power limit is lower than said first power limit.

The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument comprises an energy delivery system in communication with said controller and a power source, wherein said controller limits the power supplied to said energy delivery system from said power source to a first power limit when using said first set of firmware, wherein said controller limits the power supplied to said energy delivery system from said power source to a second power limit when using said second set of firmware, and wherein said second power limit is higher than said first power limit.

The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument comprises an energy delivery system in communication with said controller and a power source, wherein said controller limits the power supplied to said energy delivery system from said power source to a first power limit when using said first set of firmware, wherein said controller limits the power supplied to said energy delivery system from said power source to a second power limit when using said second set of firmware, and wherein said second power limit is lower than said first power limit.
12. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said controller powers said communications system of said surgical instrument to have a first range when using said first set of firmware, wherein said controller powers said communications system of said surgical instrument to have a second range when using said second set of firmware, and wherein said second range is longer than said first range.

The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said controller powers said communications system of said surgical instrument to have a first range when using said first set of firmware, wherein said controller powers said communications system of said surgical instrument to have a second range when using said second set of firmware, and wherein said second range is shorter than said first range.
14. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical communications hub comprises a payment protocol that requires a payment before delivering said second set of firmware to said surgical instrument.
15. A surgical instrument for use with a surgical communications hub, comprising:
a shaft;
an end effector;
a controller, comprising:
a first set of firmware; and
a communications system configured to communicate with said surgical communications hub, wherein said first set of firmware is suitable for said surgical instrument to perform a first surgical technique, and wherein said controller is selectively operable by the user of said surgical instrument system to upload a second set of firmware from said surgical communications hub that makes said surgical instrument suitable to perform a second surgical technique which is different than said first surgical technique.
