Abstract

A freeform optical surface includes, in part, an off-axis optical surface and a departure optical module. The off-axis optical surface may be an off-axis conic optical surface. The departure optical module may be substantially perpendicular to the off-axis conic optical surface.

Claims (11)

1. A freeform optical surface comprising:

an off-axis base optical surface defined by a portion of a first optical surface characterized by an axis of rotational symmetry; and

a departure optical module formed along a direction substantially perpendicular to the base optical surface and at a non-zero angle with respect to the axis of rotational symmetry, wherein the departure optical module is combined with the off-axis optical surface to form the freeform optical surface, wherein light impinging on the freeform optical surface passes through the base optical surface and the departure module before being reflected.

2. The freeform optical surface of claim 1 wherein said off-axis base optical surface is one of an off-axis conic optical surface, off-axis spherical optical surface, or off-axis aspheric optical surface.

3. The freeform optical surface of claim, 1 wherein said off-axis base optical surface is an off-axis base conic optical surface, wherein the off-axis base optical surface and the departure optical module are combined by adding the departure optical module in a direction of the axis of the off-axis conic optical surface.

4. A method of forming a freeform optical surface comprising:

forming an off-axis base optical surface defined by a portion of a first optical surface characterized by an axis of rotational symmetry;

forming a departure optical along a direction substantially perpendicular to the base optical surface and at a non-zero angle with respect to the axis of rotational symmetry; and

combining the off-axis base optical surface and the departure optical module to form the freeform optical surface, wherein light impinging on the freeform optical surface passes through the base optical surface and the departure module before being reflected.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein said off-axis base optical surface is one of an off-axis conic optical surface, off-axis spherical optical surface, or off-axis aspheric optical surface.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein said off-axis base optical surface is an off-axis conic optical surface, wherein combining the off-axis optical surface and the departure optical module comprises adding the departure optical module in a direction of the axis of the off-axis conic optical surface.
