Abstract

A load distributor for a sternum closure device comprises a wire receiving section configured to be attached to a wire of the sternum closure device, and a load distributing section. A tool for cutting the load distributor comprises a pair of jaws movable between a load distributor receiving position and a cutting position, wherein at least one of the jaws has substantially V-shaped cutting edges tapered towards the other jaw in an angle to the longitudinal extension of the tool.

Claims (42)

1. A load distributor for a sternum closure device, the load distributor comprising:

a wire receiving section configured to be attached to a wire of the sternum closure device, the wire receiving section having a first cross-sectional dimension; and

a load distributing section configured to extend between a sternum bone and the wire, the load distributing section having a bone-contacting region and being made from a flexible material to conform to an outer surface of the sternum bone upon tightening of the wire,

wherein the bone-contacting region has a second extension perpendicular to the wire receiving section that exceeds the first cross-sectional dimension,

wherein the load distributing section comprises segments with indentations in between and defining the bone-contacting region,

wherein the segments define a segment row with inner segments and two opposite end segments, and

wherein the end segments are tapered in a direction away from the inner segments.

2. The load distributor according to claim 1 , wherein the wire receiving section comprises at least one crimpable sleeve defining the first cross-sectional dimension.

3. The load distributor according to claim 2 , wherein the at least one crimpable sleeve defines an opening for receiving the wire, and wherein the load distributing section has a wire receiving region that forms an extension of the opening of the sleeve.

4. The load distributor according to claim 2 , wherein the at least one crimpable sleeve is molded to the load distributing section.

5. The load distributor according to claim 1 , wherein the bone-contacting region is defined by a bottom surface of the segments.

6. The load distributor according to claim 1 , wherein the segments are separated from each other by the indentations in the load distributing section.

7. The load distributor according to claim 1 , wherein at least some of the segments have a rectangular shape.

8. The load distributor according to claim 1 , wherein the segments having the same distance from their next end segment have an identical marking, and the segments having different distances from their next end segment have different markings.

9. The load distributor according to claim 1 , wherein the wire receiving section and the load distributing section are integrally formed.

10. A load distributor for a sternum closure device, the load distributor comprising:

a wire receiving section configured to be attached to a wire of the sternum closure device, the wire receiving section having a first cross-sectional dimension; and

a load distributing section configured to extend between a sternum bone and the wire, the load distributing section having a bone-contacting region and being made from a flexible material to conform to an outer surface of the sternum bone upon tightening of the wire,

wherein the bone-contacting region has a second extension perpendicular to the wire receiving section that exceeds the first cross-sectional dimension,

wherein the load distributing section comprises segments with indentations in between and defining the bone-contacting region,

wherein at least some of the segments have a rectangular shape,

wherein the segments define a segment row with inner segments and two opposite end segments, and

wherein the end segments are tapered in a direction away from the inner segments.

11. A sternum closure device, comprising:

a wire; and

a load distributor comprising:

a wire receiving section attached to the wire of the sternum closure device, the wire receiving section having a first cross-sectional dimension; and

a load distributing section configured to extend between a sternum bone and the wire, the load distributing section having a bone-contacting region and being made from a flexible material to conform to an outer surface of the sternum bone upon tightening of the wire;

wherein the bone-contacting region has a second extension perpendicular to the wire receiving section that exceeds the first cross-sectional dimension,

wherein the wire defines the first cross-sectional dimension,

wherein the load distributing section comprises segments with indentations in between and defining the bone-contacting region,

wherein the wire has a non-uniform cross-section within the segments that becomes narrower towards the segment center.

12. The sternum closure device according to claim 11 , wherein the wire receiving section comprises at least one crimpable sleeve that is crimped or provided for being crimped around the wire.

13. The sternum closure device according to claim 11 , wherein the load distributor is molded around the wire.

14. The sternum closure device according to claim 11 , wherein the load distributing section comprises the segments defining the bone-contacting region, and

wherein the wire is locally deformed to a non-circular cross-section in a central segment region.

15. A sternum closure system comprising:

the load distributor according to claim 1 ;

a wire defining the first cross-sectional dimension of the load distributor; and

a tool for cutting the load distributor, the tool comprising:

a pair of jaws movable between a first load distributor receiving position and a second load distributor cutting position, wherein, in the second position, the jaws overlap in a longitudinal extension of the tool, and wherein the jaws define V-shaped cutting edges that taper at an angle along the longitudinal extension of the tool.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the jaws of the tool leave a clearance hole in the second position, wherein the clearance hole substantially corresponds to the first cross-sectional dimension of the wire receiving section.
