Abstract

A computer-implemented method, computer system, and computer program product for deleting a file from a storage medium. A file that is marked for automatic deletion is identified. A deletion time at which the file is to be deleted from the storage medium is identified. A visual indicator associated with the file is displayed. The visual indicator changes over time to provide an indication as to a nearness of the deletion time.

Claims (42)

1. A computer-implemented method for deleting a file from a storage medium, comprising:

identifying, by a computer system, the file that is marked for automatic deletion;

identifying, by the computer system, a deletion time at which the file is to be automatically deleted from the storage medium; and

displaying, by the computer system, a visual indicator associated with the file, wherein the visual indicator becomes more transparent over time as the deletion time gets closer, wherein the visual indicator has a transparency of 20% three days before the deletion time, a transparency of 40% two days before the deletion time, and a transparency of 60% one day before the deletion time.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

automatically deleting the file from the storage medium in response to the deletion time being reached.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

responsive to input from a user, unmarking the file for automatic deletion by the computer system;

refraining from automatically deleting the file that is unmarked for automatic deletion; and

displaying the visual indicator associated with the file that is unmarked for automatic deletion with no transparency.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a color of the visual indicator changes over time.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the color of the visual indicator changes from green to yellow to red as the deletion time becomes closer.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein a type of the visual indicator is selectable by a user.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deletion time is selectable by a user.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the visual indicator comprises at least one of an icon and a file name.

9. A computer system for automatically deleting a file, the computer system comprising:

a storage medium configured to store the file;

a display system; and

a processor unit configured to:

identify the file stored in the storage medium that is marked for automatic deletion,

identify a deletion time at which the file is to be automatically deleted from the storage medium, and

display a visual indicator associated with the file on the display system, wherein the visual indicator becomes more transparent over time as the deletion time gets closer, wherein the visual indicator has a transparency of 20% three days before the deletion time, a transparency of 40% two days before the deletion time, and a transparency of 60% one day before the deletion time.

10. The computer system of claim 9 , wherein the processor unit is further configured to automatically delete the file from the storage medium in response to the deletion time being reached.

11. The computer system of claim 9 , wherein the processor unit is further configured to:

responsive to input from a user, unmark the file for automatic deletion;

refrain from automatically deleting the file that is unmarked for automatic deletion; and

display the visual indicator associated with the file that is unmarked for automatic deletion with no transparency.

12. The computer system of claim 9 , wherein a color of the visual indicator changes over time.

13. The computer system of claim 12 , wherein the color of the visual indicator changes from green to yellow to red as the deletion time becomes closer.

14. The computer system of claim 9 , wherein a type of the visual indicator is selectable by a user.

15. The computer system of claim 9 , wherein the deletion time is selectable by a user.

16. The computer system of claim 9 , wherein the visual indicator comprises at least one of an icon and a file name.

17. A computer program product for automatically deleting a file, the computer program product comprising a computer readable storage media having program instructions embodied therewith, the program instructions executable by a computer to cause the computer to perform a method comprising:

identifying a file that is marked for automatic deletion from a storage medium;

identifying a deletion time at which the file is to be automatically deleted from the storage medium; and

displaying a visual indicator associated with the file, wherein the visual indicator changes over time to provide an indication of a nearness of the deletion time becomes more transparent over time as the deletion time gets closer, wherein the visual indicator has a transparency of 20% three days before the deletion time, a transparency of 40% two days before the deletion time, and a transparency of 60% one day before the deletion time.

18. The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein the program instructions are executable by the computer to cause the computer to automatically delete the file from the storage medium in response to the deletion time being reached.

19. The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein the program instructions are executable by the computer to cause the computer to:

responsive to input from a user, unmark the file for automatic deletion;

refrain from automatically deleting the file that is unmarked for automatic deletion; and

display the visual indicator associated with the file that is unmarked for automatic deletion with no transparency.

20. The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein a color of the visual indicator changes from green to yellow to red as the deletion time becomes closer.
