Abstract

A surgical instrument that includes a shaft assembly that defines a shaft axis and includes a proximal articulation joint that defines a first articulation axis that is transverse to the shaft axis and a distal articulation joint that defines a second articulation axis that is transverse to the shaft axis and the first articulation axis. The instrument further includes an anvil that is non-removably attached to the shaft assembly and a channel that is removably attachable to the shaft assembly and configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge.

Claims (65)

1. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a clamped position;

a firing driver movable from a starting position toward an ending position during a firing stroke;

an elongate shaft;

a series of articulation vertebrae;

a flexible firing rod extending through said series of articulation vertebrae, wherein said flexible firing rod is configured to drive said firing driver between said starting position and said ending position; and

a plurality of flexible articulation actuators extending through said series of articulation vertebrae, wherein said plurality of flexible articulation actuators are configured to flex to position said end effector relative to said elongate shaft about at least one of said series of articulation vertebrae, wherein said plurality of flexible articulation actuators comprises:

a first flexible articulation actuator extending on a first lateral side of said flexible firing rod, wherein said first flexible articulation actuator terminates at a first discrete attachment location on said first lateral side of said flexible firing rod; and

a second flexible articulation actuator extending on a second lateral side of said flexible firing rod, wherein said second flexible articulation actuator terminates at a second discrete attachment location on said second lateral side of said flexible firing rod.

The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said end effector further comprises a fastener cartridge comprising fasteners and a fastener driver drivable within said end effector by said firing driver, and wherein said fasteners are deployable from said fastener cartridge as said fastener driver moves toward said ending position.

3. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , further comprising a lockout configured to prevent said firing driver from moving through said firing stroke unless an unfired fastener cartridge is positioned in said end effector.

4. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said end effector further comprises a window, and wherein said firing driver is viewable through said window when said firing driver is in said starting position.

5. The surgical stapling system of claim 4 , further comprising a rotation shaft configured to rotate said end effector about a longitudinal axis defined by said elongate shaft, wherein said rotation shaft is configured to rotate said end effector relative to said series of articulation vertebrae.

6. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said series of articulation vertebrae comprises:

a first vertebrae comprising recess; and

a second vertebrae comprising a protrusion, wherein said protrusion is configured to nest within said recess to limit torqueing of said series of articulation vertebrae.

7. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said firing driver is configured to maintain said second jaw in said clamped position as said firing driver moves toward said ending position.

8. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

an anvil; and

an elongate channel, wherein said anvil and said elongate channel are configurable between an open configuration and a closed configuration;

a firing beam movable from a proximal position toward a distal position during a firing stroke;

an elongate shaft;

a flexible spine, wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said elongate shaft about said flexible spine, and wherein said flexible spine comprises a series of articulation vertebrae;

a flexible firing shaft extending through said flexible spine, wherein said flexible firing shaft is configured to drive said firing beam between said proximal position and said distal position; and

a plurality of flexible articulation actuators extending through said series of articulation vertebrae, wherein said plurality of flexible articulation actuators are configured to position said end effector relative to said elongate shaft about at least one of said series of articulation vertebrae, wherein said plurality of flexible articulation actuators comprises:

a first flexible articulation actuator extending alongside the flexible firing shaft; and

a second flexible articulation actuator extending alongside the flexible firing shaft.

The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge comprising staples and a sled drivable within said end effector by said firing beam, and wherein said staples are deployable from said staple cartridge as said sled moves toward said distal position.

10. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , further comprising a lockout configured to prevent said firing beam from moving through said firing stroke unless an unfired staple cartridge is positioned in said end effector.

11. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said firing beam comprises a cutting edge.

12. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said end effector further comprises a window, and wherein said firing beam is viewable through said window when said firing beam is in said proximal position.

13. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said firing beam is configured to maintain said anvil and said elongate channel in said closed configuration as said firing beam moves toward said distal position.

14. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , further comprising an electric motor comprising a shaft operably coupleable with said flexible firing rod, and wherein said flexible firing rod is drivable by an output of said shaft.

The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said end effector further comprises a fastener cartridge comprising a sled, wherein said sled comprises a first lateral side and a second lateral side, wherein said first lateral side comprises a first leading ramp and a first trailing ramp, and wherein said second lateral side comprises a second leading ramp and a second trailing ramp.

16. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said end effector further comprises a fastener cartridge comprising a sled, and wherein said fastener cartridge defines:

an enclosed distal end; and

a recess within said enclosed distal end, wherein said recess is configured to receive said sled during said firing stroke.

17. The surgical stapling system of claim 16 , wherein said firing driver is movable from said ending position toward said starting position during a retraction stroke, and wherein said sled is configured to remain in said recess during said retraction stroke.

18. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , further comprising an electric motor comprising a shaft operably coupled with said flexible firing shaft, and wherein said flexible firing shaft is drivable by an output of said shaft.

The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge comprising a sled, wherein said sled comprises a first lateral side and a second lateral side, wherein said first lateral side comprises a first leading ramp and a first trailing ramp, and wherein said second lateral side comprises a second leading ramp and a second trailing ramp.

20. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge comprising a sled, and wherein said staple cartridge defines:

an enclosed distal end; and

a recess within said enclosed distal end, wherein said recess is configured to receive said sled during said firing stroke.

21. The surgical stapling system of claim 20 , wherein said firing beam is movable from said distal position toward said proximal position during a retraction stroke, and wherein said sled is configured to remain in said recess during said retraction stroke.

22. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said end effector further comprises a fastener cartridge, and wherein said flexible firing rod is configured to move through said fastener cartridge as said flexible firing rod moves said firing driver toward said ending position.

23. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said first flexible articulation actuator comprises a first articulation band, and wherein said second flexible articulation actuator comprises a second articulation band.

24. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge, and wherein said flexible firing shaft is configured to move through said staple cartridge as said flexible firing shaft moves said firing beam toward said distal position.

25. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said first flexible articulation actuator comprises a first articulation band, and wherein said second flexible articulation actuator comprises a second articulation band.

26. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a clamped position;

a firing driver movable from a starting position toward an ending position during a firing stroke;

an elongate shaft;

a series of articulation vertebrae, defining:

a longitudinal axis;

a first passageway; and

a second passageway;

a flexible firing rod extending through said series of articulation vertebrae, wherein said flexible firing rod is configured to drive said firing driver between said starting position and said ending position; and

a plurality of flexible articulation actuators configured to position said end effector relative to said elongate shaft about at least one of said series of articulation vertebrae, wherein said flexible plurality of articulation actuators comprises:

a first articulation actuator extending on a first lateral side of said longitudinal axis through said first passageway; and

a second articulation actuator extending on a second lateral side of said longitudinal axis through said second passageway.
