Abstract

In an elongated casing, an active agent container connected to an injection needle can be shifted axially by a spring force. Auto-injectors which are sold or distributed filled and with the springs tensed have to be provided with a needle protecting cap to ensure the sterility of the injection needle. When such a needle protecting cap is removed as preparation for using the auto-injector, a tensile force can be exerted on the active agent container. Therefore, the active agent container comprising the injection needle must be prevented from being undesirably pulled forwards. At least one latching tongue prevents the active agent container from being prematurely shifted with respect to the casing, by abutting a flange arranged on a sliding sleeve which accommodates the active agent container. When the auto-injector is placed onto a person's skin, a needle protecting tube is shifted into the casing, forcing the latching tongue away from the flange and, thus, freeing the travel path for needle movement.

Claims (20)

1. An auto-injector for automatically injecting an active agent, comprising a) an elongated casing, b) an injection needle connected to an active agent container, c) a piston shiftable in the active agent container, by a piston rod into which at least a portion of a driving spring of the auto-injector extends, to deliver the active agent, d) a needle protecting tube shiftable into the elongated casing against the force of a spring, whereby shifting the needle protecting tube into the elongated casing triggers the driving spring to act on the piston, e) a locking member in the form of a locking sleeve with at least one locking tongue protruding elastically from the locking sleeve, wherein when the auto-injector is lifted from a point of injection the needle protecting tube is shifted back towards an initial state by a force of the spring and a free end of the at least one locking tongue grips behind an edge of the needle protecting tube, such that the needle protecting tube is secured against retracting relative to the active agent container and locked in a position in which it substantially surrounds the injection needle.

2. The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein when the auto-injector is pressed onto the point of injection, the needle protecting tube shifts into the elongated casing to compress the spring and to move the locking sleeve relative to the elongated casing.

3. The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the spring is arranged between the needle protecting tube and the elongated casing.

4. The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the needle protecting tube is shiftable relative to the elongated casing from the initial state protecting a tip of the injection needle.

5. The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the edge of the needle protecting tube is formed between a proximal and distal end of the needle protecting tube.

6. The auto-injector of claim 1 , further comprising a needle protecting cap with an outer sleeve reaching over a front casing part of the auto-injector and the needle protecting tube for substantially sealing a needle end of the auto-injector prior to use.

7. The auto-injector of claim 6 , wherein the needle protecting cap substantially encloses a portion of the active agent container.

8. The auto-injector of claim 6 , wherein the needle protecting cap is formed such that when attached to the auto-injector, the needle protecting cap prevents the needle protecting tube from being retracted into the casing.

9. The auto-injector of claim 6 , wherein the needle protecting cap comprises an inner sleeve extending over the active agent container and an outer sleeve extending over the needle protecting tube.

10. The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the at least a portion of the driving spring that extends into the piston rod is a distal end of the driving spring.

An auto-injector for automatically injecting an active agent, comprising a) an elongated casing comprising an active agent container receiving portion adapted to support an active agent container with an injection needle connected thereto and with a shiftable piston; b) a piston rod into which at least a portion of a driving spring of the auto-injector extends, wherein a distal end of the driving spring extends into the active agent container receiving portion during an automatic injection, c) a needle protecting tube shiftable into the elongated casing against the force of a spring, whereby shifting the needle protecting tube into the elongated casing triggers the driving spring to act on the piston rod, d) a locking member in the form of a locking sleeve with at least one locking tongue protruding elastically from the locking sleeve, wherein when the auto-injector is lifted from a point of injection the needle protecting tube is shifted back towards an initial state by a force of the spring and a free end of the at least one locking tongue grips behind an edge of the needle protecting tube, such that the needle protecting tube is secured against retracting relative to the active agent container and locked in a position in which it substantially surrounds the injection needle.

12. The auto-injector of claim 11 , wherein when the auto-injector is pressed onto the point of injection, the needle protecting tube shifts into the elongated casing to compress the spring and to move the locking sleeve relative to the elongated casing.

13. The auto-injector of claim 11 , wherein the spring is arranged between the needle protecting tube and the elongated casing.

14. The auto-injector of claim 11 , wherein the needle protecting tube is shiftable relative to the elongated casing from the initial state protecting a tip of the injection needle.

15. The auto-injector of claim 11 , wherein the edge of the needle protecting tube is formed between a proximal and distal end of the needle protecting tube.

The auto-injector of claim 11 , further comprising a needle protecting cap with an outer sleeve reaching over a front casing part of the auto-injector and the needle protecting tube for substantially sealing a needle end of the auto-injector, mounted with an active agent container supported in the elongated housing prior to use.

17. The auto-injector of claim 16 , wherein the needle protecting cap substantially encloses a portion of the active agent container.

18. The auto-injector of claim 16 , wherein the needle protecting cap is formed such that when attached to the auto-injector, the needle protecting cap prevents the needle protecting tube from being retracted into the casing.

19. The auto-injector of claim 16 , wherein the needle protecting cap comprises an inner sleeve extending over the active agent container and an outer sleeve extending over the needle protecting tube.

20. The auto-injector of claim 11 , wherein the at least a portion of the driving spring that extends into the piston rod is a distal end of the driving spring, to drive the piston rod to shift a piston of the active agent container.
