Abstract

A hand vacuum cleaner has an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet with a suction motor positioned in the air flow path. A cyclone chamber positioned in the air flow path has a cyclone axis of rotation that extends in the forward/rearward direction. A pre-motor filter overlies the cyclone chamber.

Claims (35)

1. A hand vacuum cleaner having a front end, a rear end, an upper end and a lower end having a pistol grip handle, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet, the dirty air inlet provided at the front end and at the upper end, the clean air outlet provided at the rear end and the lower end;

(b) a cyclone assembly comprising a cyclone chamber positioned in the air flow path, the cyclone assembly having a cyclone assembly air inlet and a cyclone assembly air outlet, the cyclone chamber having a cyclone axis of rotation, wherein the cyclone axis of rotation extends generally in a forward/rearward direction;

(c) a pre-motor filter positioned downstream of the cyclone assembly and overlying the cyclone chamber when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end; and,

(d) a suction motor positioned in the air flow path downstream of the pre-motor filter and upstream of the clean air outlet.

2. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the pre-motor filter is provided in a per-motor filter housing having an openable door wherein an upper surface of the hand vacuum cleaner comprises the openable door.

3. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 further comprising a dirty air inlet passage which extends rearwardly from the dirty air inlet and the dirty air inlet passage is positioned above the cyclone chamber.

4. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 3 wherein the cyclone assembly air inlet is provided in an upper end of the cyclone assembly and the dirty air inlet passage has a passage outlet that communicates with the cyclone assembly air inlet.

5. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 4 wherein the cyclone assembly air inlet is provided in a front end of the cyclone assembly.

6. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 4 wherein the dirty air inlet passage has an inlet passage axis and the inlet passage axis intersects the pre-motor filter.

7. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the cyclone assembly air outlet is provided at a rear end of the cyclone assembly and after exiting the cyclone assembly air outlet, air travels up to the pre-motor filter.

8. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end, an upper end of the pre-motor filter is above an upper end of the suction motor.

9. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 further comprising a post-motor filter wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end, the post-motor filter is positioned underlying the pistol grip handle.

10. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the hand vacuum cleaner has a main body, a portion of the main body houses the suction motor, the clean air outlet is exterior to the portion of the main body and when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end, the clean air outlet is positioned at a lower end of the pistol grip handle.

11. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the clean air outlet comprises a removable tray and the removable tray holds a post-motor filter.

12. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 11 wherein the tray comprises a rear end of a lower surface of the hand vacuum cleaner.

13. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the cyclone axis intersects the pistol grip handle.

14. A hand vacuum cleaner having a front end, a rear end, an upper end and a lower end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet, the dirty air inlet provided at the upper end;

(b) a dirty air inlet passage which extends rearwardly from the dirty air inlet;

(c) a cyclone assembly comprising a cyclone chamber positioned in the air flow path, the cyclone assembly having a cyclone assembly air inlet and a cyclone assembly air outlet, the cyclone chamber having a cyclone axis of rotation, wherein the cyclone axis of rotation extends generally in a forward/rearward direction and the dirty air inlet passage is positioned above the cyclone chamber;

(d) a pre-motor filter positioned downstream of the cyclone assembly and overlying the cyclone chamber when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end; and,

(e) a suction motor positioned in the air flow path downstream of the pre-motor filter and upstream of the clean air outlet.

15. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 14 wherein the dirty air inlet passage has an inlet passage axis and the inlet passage axis intersects the pre-motor filter.

16. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 14 wherein the cyclone assembly air outlet is provided at a rear end of the cyclone assembly and after exiting the cyclone assembly air outlet, air travels up to the pre-motor filter.

17. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 14 further comprising a pistol grip handle and the cyclone axis intersects the pistol grip handle.

18. A hand vacuum cleaner having a front end, a rear end, an upper end and a lower end having a pistol grip handle, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet, the dirty air inlet provided at the front end and at the upper end, the clean air outlet provided at the rear end and the lower end;

(b) a cyclone assembly comprising a cyclone chamber positioned in the air flow path, the cyclone assembly having a cyclone assembly air inlet and a cyclone assembly air outlet, the cyclone chamber having a cyclone axis of rotation, wherein the cyclone axis of rotation extends generally in a forward/rearward direction;

(c) a pre-motor filter positioned downstream of the cyclone assembly;

(d) a suction motor positioned in the air flow path downstream of the pre-motor filter and upstream of the clean air outlet; and,

(e) a handle

wherein the clean air outlet comprises a removable tray provided at a lower end of the hand vacuum cleaner and the removable tray holds a post-motor filter.

19. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 18 wherein the tray has a lower surface that comprises the clean air outlet and the lower surface of the tray is part of a lower surface of the hand vacuum cleaner.

20. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 18 wherein the hand vacuum cleaner has a main body, a portion of the main body houses the suction motor, the clean air outlet is exterior to the portion of the main body and when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end, the clean air outlet is positioned at a lower end of the handle.
