Abstract

A method for providing an administration policy to a user device comprising a plurality of applications, the method comprising centrally generating the administration policy to be implemented in the user device, the administration policy comprising at least one of an application administration policy to be used by at least one of the plurality of applications and a client administration policy for the user device; and providing the generated policy to the user device.

Claims (52)

1. A method of implementing administration policies on a wireless communication device having a plurality of applications in an application container, the method comprising:

applying on the wireless communication device an application administration policy to be used by two or more of the plurality of applications in the application container, wherein the application administration policy is used for common management of the two or more individual applications in the application container; and

applying on the wireless communication device a client administration policy independently of the application administration policy, wherein the client administration policy is used to manage administration and privilege of the wireless communication device.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

updating the application administration policy on the wireless communication device independently of the client administration policy.

3. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

updating the client administration policy on the wireless communication device independently of the application administration policy.

4. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the application administration policy and client administration policy are independently applied at different times.

5. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the application administration policy and client administration policy are independently updated at different times.

6. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the application administration policy and client administration policy on the wireless communication device from a server, wherein the application administration policy and client administration policy are received independently at different times.

7. The method as claimed in claim 6 , further comprising:

installing the application administration policy and the client administration policy independently at different times.

8. The method as claimed in claim 7 , wherein installing of the client administration policy comprises storing the client administration policy in a client administration policy database.

9. The method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein installing of the application administration policy comprises storing the application administration policy in an application administration policy database.

10. The method as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the application administration policy database is distinct from the client administration policy database.

11. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the application administration policy comprises a plurality of application administration policies, each administration policy being assigned to a respective two or more of the plurality of applications, wherein each of the plurality of application administration policies is uniquely identified using an identifier.

12. A non-transitory machine readable medium having tangibly stored thereon executable instructions that, in response to execution by a processor of a wireless communication device, cause the wireless communication device to:

apply on the wireless communication device an application administration policy to be used by two or more of the plurality of applications in the application container, wherein the application administration policy is used for common management of the two or more individual applications in the application container; and

apply on the wireless communication device a client administration policy independently of the application administration policy, wherein the client administration policy is used to manage administration and privilege of the wireless communication device.

13. The non-transitory machine readable medium as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the executable instructions, in response to execution by the processor of a wireless communication device, cause the wireless communication device to:

update the application administration policy on the wireless communication device independently of the client administration policy.

14. The non-transitory machine readable medium as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the executable instructions, in response to execution by the processor of a wireless communication device, cause the wireless communication device to:

update the client administration policy on the wireless communication device independently of the application administration policy.

15. The non-transitory machine readable medium as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the application administration policy and client administration policy are independently applied at different times.

16. The non-transitory machine readable medium as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the application administration policy and client administration policy are independently updated at different times.

17. The non-transitory machine readable medium as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the executable instructions, in response to execution by the processor of a wireless communication device, cause the wireless communication device to:

receive the application administration policy and client administration policy on the wireless communication device from a server, wherein the application administration policy and client administration policy are received independently at different times.

18. The non-transitory machine readable medium as claimed in claim 17 , wherein the executable instructions, in response to execution by the processor of a wireless communication device, cause the wireless communication device to:

install the application administration policy and the client administration policy independently at different times.

19. The non-transitory machine readable medium as claimed in claim 18 , wherein installing of the client administration policy comprises storing the client administration policy in a client administration policy database.

20. The non-transitory machine readable medium as claimed in claim 19 , wherein installing of the application administration policy comprises storing the application administration policy in an application administration policy database.

21. The non-transitory machine readable medium as claimed in claim 20 , wherein the application administration policy database is distinct from the client administration policy database.

22. The non-transitory machine readable medium as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the application administration policy comprises a plurality of application administration policies, each administration policy being assigned to a respective two or more of the plurality of applications, wherein each of the plurality of application administration policies is uniquely identified using an identifier.

23. A wireless communication device, comprising:

a processor configured to:

apply on the wireless communication device an application administration policy to be used by two or more of the plurality of applications in the application container, wherein the application administration policy is used for common management of the two or more individual applications in the application container; and

apply on the wireless communication device a client administration policy independently of the application administration policy, wherein the client administration policy is used to manage administration and privilege of the wireless communication device.

24. The wireless communication device as claimed in claim 23 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

update the application administration policy on the wireless communication device independently of the client administration policy.

25. The wireless communication device as claimed in claim 23 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

update the client administration policy on the wireless communication device independently of the application administration policy.

26. The wireless communication device as claimed in claim 23 , wherein the application administration policy and client administration policy are independently applied at different times.

27. The wireless communication device as claimed in claim 23 , wherein the application administration policy and client administration policy are independently updated at different times.

28. The wireless communication device as claimed in claim 23 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive the application administration policy and client administration policy on the wireless communication device from a server, wherein the application administration policy and client administration policy are received independently at different times.

29. The wireless communication device as claimed in claim 28 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

install the application administration policy and the client administration policy independently at different times.

30. The wireless communication device as claimed in claim 29 , wherein installing of the client administration policy comprises storing the client administration policy in a client administration policy database.

31. The wireless communication device as claimed in claim 30 , wherein installing of the application administration policy comprises storing the application administration policy in an application administration policy database.

32. The wireless communication device as claimed in claim 31 , wherein the application administration policy database is distinct from the client administration policy database.

33. The wireless communication device as claimed in claim 23 , wherein the application administration policy comprises a plurality of application administration policies, each administration policy being assigned to a respective two or more of the plurality of applications, wherein each of the plurality of application administration policies is uniquely identified using an identifier.
